after decades of supporting the rendering community worldwide, the NVIDIA ARC Forum will go out of service, unfortunately, including all of its mental ray sections. That does not mean its vast valuable content is lost, but we will stop hosting it on the original website location.

The version 1.2 update of the __________________________ and 1_____________________________ plugins, and the corresponding 2_____________________ distributions are based on the latest major mental ray version 3.14.5.

3_____________________________is now available for download here or it is automatically installed by the Autodesk Application Manager.

It ships with mental ray 3.13.1.9 which contains improvements for the BSP2 acceleration structure in certain cases, bug fixes for multi-host rendering and for some framebuffer handling issues. The release notes provide more details.

Several bugs were fixed in the mental ray for Maya translator, notably concerning 4____ when modifying simple mila_material parameters, satellite rendering issues, and a workflow improvement with regard to the new Create->Lights menu and Environment lights.

5_____________________________is now available for download here.

It ships with mental ray 3.13.1.8. Both the mental ray core and the integration provide important fixes that we will list in this post.

Today we are happy to announce that our NVIDIA mental ray Standalone software is now directly available from us at NVIDIA. mental ray Standalone is a command line software necessary for large distributed rendering processes typically on render farms. With a purchase from NVIDIA you receive the current and previous versions of mental ray. This includes immediate access to a private forum with direct support from our development teams. Upgrades of the initial license purchase includes one year of maintenance as well.

Autodesk 3ds Max 2015 and Autodesk Maya 2015 ship with mental ray 3.12 which includes a prototype of our new global illumination engine accelerated by the GPU. We encourage our 3ds Max and Maya users to try it out. Your feedback will help us in making this a big step forward into the future of rendering with mental ray. While the current version is in prototype status and not yet feature complete, we are constantly improving the algorithms and adding new features. Your input is most welcome in this process.

The key idea of the new GI engine is full and exact simulation of the lighting interactions in a scene. This way, we overcome drawbacks from caching techniques and interpolation, and make mental ray more interactive and predictable. The brute-force raytracing approach is accelerated on CUDA capable NVIDIA GPUs making it particularly attractive in this set-up. Its result gets combined seamlessly and automatically with the primary rendering done on the CPU. This ensures full compatibility with existing custom shaders, which do not need to be touched in order to take benefit of the new GI engine.

We would like to hear your feedback and see your renderings using this prototype. Please join our NVIDIA Advanced Rendering forum, if you have not already, and send us your comments and discuss the mental ray GI GPU prototype. The dedicated mental ray GI GPU Prototype forum topic here

To see how a scene can be lit by an image instead of lights in mentalray, a simple scene was created and mib_material_x were applied to the 3 objects. One sphere was Preset to Chrome, the other Water (just for fun), and the plane a glossy plastic.

In my opinion. Arnold integration is like mental ray integration 7 years ago.

But with more new and trendy engine that does not support all the caching modes (which are becoming less relevant).

But while many of the features in Arnold easier and more convenient.

NVIDIA licensing for mental ray is a flexible, machine-based, yearly subscription that enables any combination of production rendering and OS on any machine. Production rendering options include sequence rendering when working within Maya, running Maya batch or Maya headless when not working in Maya, or using mental ray Standalone or Satellite mode without Maya.

Floating licenses are $295 or $995 for a five-pack, while systems containing a professional NVIDIA GPU qualify for special pricing of $95 or $325 for a five-pack. Customers who purchased mental ray standalone from Autodesk will have their subscriptions matched with NVIDIA licenses at no cost. Available beginning November 30, Maya users can download mental ray for Maya here.

Users of Autodesk Maya have been relying on the film-quality results from the NVIDIA mental ray renderer for a long time now. This Academy Award-winning renderer is now available directly from NVIDIA and delivers all its amazing functionality with improved workflow and speed, and progressive feedback within an interactive Maya viewport.

Unlike other film renderers, mental ray can be fully customized (physical and photorealistic or nonphysical and stylized) used with both CPUs and GPUs when using global illumination, and compatible with Iray in the use of NVIDIA Material Definition Language (MDL) and vMaterials.

NVIDIA will be supplying the latest mental ray and workflow enhancements to multiple Maya versions, starting with Maya 2016 and 2017 on Windows, Linux, and MacOS. NVIDIA licensing for mental ray is flexible by being a machine-based, yearly subscription that enables any combination of production rendering and OS on any machine. Production rendering options include sequence rendering when working within Maya, running Maya batch or Maya headless when not working in Maya, or using mental ray Standalone or Satellite mode without Maya.

6__________ (stylized as 7__________) is a production-quality ray tracing application for 3D rendering. Its Berlin-based developer Mental Images was acquired by Nvidia in 2007 and Mental Ray was discontinued in 2017.

Mental Ray was designed to be integrated into a third-party application using an API or be used as a standalone program using the .mi scene file format for batch-mode rendering. There were many programs integrating it such as Autodesk Maya, 3D Studio Max, Cinema 4D and Revit, Softimage|XSI, Side Effects Software's Houdini, SolidWorks and Dassault Systmes' CATIA. Most of these software front-ends provided their own library of custom shaders (described below). However assuming these shaders are available to mental ray, any .mi file can be rendered, regardless of the software that generated it.

Before users of mental ray in Maya had to wait for Maya service packs for fixes and entirely new versions of Maya for new features but with the subscription model, users can get continuous updates and fixes.

NVIDIA is continuing mental ray as their own product and is testing their free Beta version for Maya 2017 with new features like the GPU accelerated GI Next and interactive rendering. In some scenes the GI Next performace is nearly 15x faster than CPU rendering.

In order to determine whether your system is qualified to run Maya and mental ray for Maya, you must have a qualified 8_________, 9________________,10_____________, and 11_______________. See the following sections.

There was a download of 12_________________________ 1.13 on the developer's website when we last checked. We cannot confirm if there is a free download of this software available. NVIDIA mentalray for Maya belongs to Photo & Graphics Tools.

The following version: 1.1 is the most frequently downloaded one by the program users. According to the results of the Google Safe Browsing check, the developer's site is safe. Despite this, we recommend checking the downloaded files with any free antivirus software. The actual developer of the software is NVIDIA Corporation. NVIDIA mentalray for Maya can be installed on 64-bit versions of Windows 7/8/10/11.

NVIDIA mental ray for Maya is a plug-in rendering solution, seamlessly integrated into Autodesk Maya. Maya artists now receive interactive viewport rendering and easy-to-use global illumination with substantial GPU-acceleration, in addition to all previous functionality and compatibility.

MentalCore is a cross-platform, standalone plugin designed to help artists achieve maximum creativity and efficiency while using NVIDIA mental ray with Autodesk Maya. CoreCG released the new plugin today, following two years of extensive use at Oktobor Animation, a year of beta testing by high profile film, television, and game companies, and a soft launch in December 2011.

MentalCore, developed by Supervising Technical Director Corey Frew at Oktobor Animation, animation studio for several high-profile Nickelodeon series, is production-proven and provides enhancements to the standard rendering workflow using Autodesk Maya with NVIDIA mental ray. Suitable for any size studio, MentalCore supports Maya 2011 and Maya 2012, and hosts a user-friendly interface and robust feature set.

Note that mental ray requires either a full interactive maya license or a maya batch license to render. I believe a floating interactive Maya license comes with 5 batch licenses, but you should double check with Autodesk (or your reseller) to see what your license entitlements are. 5376163bf9
