i am on linux and was using GAP for a 2.9 build, everything works but now since 2.10 it refuses to install. when i tried to install it on windows on gimp 2.9 and 2.10, i got a lot of errors when i started gimp with no success. it works for 2.8 (and 2.9 on linux) but i don't want to have two versions running. do you know if they ever planned to update theyr plugin? or a workarround?

@loqs:

Just yesterday I upgraded gimp to the 2.10.36-1 and your PKGBUILD works (I am seeing the menu entries right now). I am pretty sure I've tried it a week ago, but now I can confirm the problem is solved. I am uploading the PKGBUILD to AUR

@Dsung: As you might have seen, my OS is Ubuntu. So all I do to install is typing "sudo apt-get install gimp-gap" in a terminal. I've never installed it in Windows and I thought it can't be very difficult to do so. Maybe someone else here has more experience with that.

I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 and I've installed Gimp via Software Manager (so that it became a snap, located in /snap/gimp/252/). Now I want to install gimp-GAP. I see no other way than to use "gimp-gap-2.6.0.tar.bz2" from -animation-package-260-released/. However, after unpacking, when running ./configure it complains:

In the general case you can install plugins as user plugins in the Gimp user profile. Go to Edit>Preferences>Folders>Plugins, this lists two folders, the "system" one in the snap package (or /usr/lib), and the "user" one in /home (~/.config/GIMP/2.10 in recent versions,~/.gimp-2.8` in earlier versions). Just drop you executables in the "user" one.

As Ofnuts points out there is a plug-in-gauss-rle2 but in Gimp 2.10 it is GEGL compatibility plugin. Sometimes you can get an old Gimp 2.8 version installed in Gimp and working. Not really worth the effort.

Anyone know what the cause or cure is for the embedded JPEG thumbnails created by GIMP 2.10 being darker than the actual JPEG image? (specifically it's 2.10.1)

Here's a side by side of the same image saved in 2.8 (left) and 2.10 (right) and shown in W10 explorer view, which is using the thumbnail embedded in the JPEG as its image source.

The 2.8 thumbnail is the same lightness as the main JPEG image.

The underlying image processing engine is new in 2.10 (= GEGL) - so differences appearing might not be that surprising.

There may well be some fine tuning required, if that is possible to do yourself or if "the source" needs mending is unknown to me.

Thanks for the reply. Just to be clear, the main JPEG image out of 2.10 is fine, it's just the preview thumbnail that's embedded in the JPEG that's too dark, i.e. the embedded thumbnail is different to the main JPEG.

thanks it does make sense as a technical explanation, if not operationally for the user. I've taken to working in 2.10 then uploading and re-saving the final image from 2.8 to get a matching JPEG thumbnail

In Gimp version GIMP 2.10.28, if you copy and paste the original image you want to save as a new image and then save the new image, the new thumbnail does not show up dark.

The same problem you describe here I have experienced with Debian Buster 10 and Fedora Design Suite 30. Dependency conflicts and breaks will not allow you to install MyPaint 1.2 from repositories along with the latest GIMP 2.10 that is really nice having the MyPaint brushes included. Lately I have been using these two graphic arts programs more than any others.

Previously, GIMP applied for several positions in the Google Summer of Code (GSoC).[22][23] From 2006 to 2009 there have been nine GSoC projects that have been listed as successful,[22] although not all successful projects have been merged into GIMP immediately. The healing brush and perspective clone tools and Ruby bindings were created as part of the 2006 GSoC and can be used in version 2.8.0 of GIMP, although there were three other projects that were completed and are later available in a stable version of GIMP; those projects being Vector Layers (end 2008 in 2.8 and master),[24] and a JPEG 2000 plug-in (mid 2009 in 2.8 and master).[25] Several of the GSoC projects were completed in 2008, but have been merged into a stable GIMP release later in 2009 to 2014 for Version 2.8.xx and 2.10.x. Some of them needed some more code work for the master tree.

Second public Development 2.9-Version was 2.9.4 with many deep improvements after initial Public Version 2.9.2.[26][27] Third Public 2.9-Development version is Version 2.9.6.[28] One of the new features is removing the 4 GB size limit of XCF file.[29][30] Increase of possible threads to 64 is also an important point for modern parallel execution in actual AMD Ryzen and Intel Xeon processors. Version 2.9.8 included many bug fixes and improvements in gradients and clips.[31] Improvements in performance and optimization beyond bug hunting were the development targets for 2.10.0.[32] MacOS Beta is available with Version 2.10.4.[33]

The Generic Graphics Library (GEGL) was first introduced as part of GIMP on the 2.6 release of GIMP. This initial introduction does not yet exploit all of the capabilities of GEGL; as of the 2.6 release, GIMP can use GEGL to perform high bit-depth color operations; because of this, less information is lost when performing color operations.[87] When GEGL is fully integrated, GIMP will have a higher color bit depth and better non-destructive work-flow. GIMP 2.8.xx supports only 8-bit color, which is much lower than digital cameras, e.g., produce (12-bit or higher). Full support for high bit depth is included with GIMP 2.10. OpenCL enables hardware acceleration for some operations.[88]

GIMP supports importing and exporting with a large number of different file formats.[91] GIMP's native format XCF is designed to store all information GIMP can contain about an image; XCF is named after the eXperimental Computing Facility where GIMP was authored. Import and export capability can be extended to additional file formats by means of plug-ins. XCF file size is extended to more than 4 GB since 2.9.6 and new stable tree 2.10.x.[citation needed] e24fc04721
