According to the Japanese blog Mac Okatara, Apple might introduce a new smartphone model in 2017 with a 5" display to slot in between the existing 4.7" and 5.5" variants. The report, which originates from a Taiwanese supplier, also says the new mid-size iPhone would use an iPhone 7 Plus-like dual-camera, albeit with a vertical lens alignment rather than a horizontal one.
Finally a smaller sized Apple smartphone with a screen considered standard (5-5.2") sized by other manufacturers for their past 3 generations. But, being Apple, they position it as a "premium" (as in price premium) model!
I used to think like you, and you are right about the zoom advantage and the larger sensor advantage. But now that I can shoot raw on my iPhone, after evaluating the results, I'm finding it less and less necessary to carry my current enthusiast raw compact zoom with me. I used to hate smartphone JPEGs, but being able to shoot with the Lightroom Mobile camera in Pro (manual) mode straight to DNG had removed many of my objections.
Stop and think about it for a moment. Many of the world's greatest photos were taken with a simple compact film camera with a fixed fast medium-wide angle lens. By coincidence, those are the same attributes of a smartphone camera. There is no reason it cannot be used for "random, general use."

I have tried their phones every once in a while, but was always frustrated about the interrupted workflow (yeah, I know, it's the programmers fault, extensions missing, etc), but on an Android phone, this was all much smoother for quite a while. Now, the 6s Plus is the one iPhone where I think they made a really good device. It is working quite to my liking.. I am not sure yet about the 7 Plus.. I think the 6s Plus was some sort of a peak..

Boy oh boy, OLED is premium now? Thought Apple fanboy's would always argue it was inferior with fake clowny colors! Oh but this is the Apple version so it will just be magically better. I've *always* preferred OLED and can see how it substantially reduces eyestrain and mental stress compared to LCD. Apple is finally taking 1 step to building a smartphone I might actually purchase (disclaimer: I am actually an Apple stockholder and have an iPhone due to work).
