"Gigi" is the title song from the 1958 Academy Award-winning film, directed by Vincente Minnelli. It was written by Frederick Loewe (music) and Alan Jay Lerner (words), sung by Louis Jourdan in the film.[1][2] It then went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1958.[1][3]

Lerner's songwriting partner Frederick Loewe had expressed no interest in working in Hollywood, so Lerner agreed to write the screenplay only. He and Freed discussed casting; Lerner favored Audrey Hepburn, who had starred in the Broadway production written by Loos, but Freed preferred MGM contract star Leslie Caron, who had co-starred in An American in Paris for him. Both agreed Maurice Chevalier would be ideal for aging boulevardier Honor Lachaille, and Lerner proposed Dirk Bogarde for Gaston. Lerner agreed to write the lyrics if Freed could convince Bogarde and designer Cecil Beaton to join the project. He decided to approach Loewe once again, and when he suggested they compose the score in Paris, Loewe agreed.[9]

In March 1957, the duo began working in Paris. When Chevalier, who already had agreed to appear in the film, first heard "Thank Heaven for Little Girls", he was delighted. When he discussed his waning interest in wine and women in favor of performing for an audience in cabarets, Chevalier inadvertently inspired the creation of another tune for his character, "I'm Glad I'm Not Young Anymore". The lyrics for another of his songs, the duet "I Remember It Well", performed with Hermione Gingold as his former love Madame Alvarez, were adapted from words Lerner had written for Love Life, a 1948 collaboration with Kurt Weill.[10] "Say a Prayer for Me Tonight", a solo performed by Gigi, had been written for Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady but was removed during the pre-Broadway run. Lerner disliked the melody, but Loewe, Freed, and Minnelli voted to include it in the film.[11]

By mid-July, the composers had completed most of the score, but still were missing the title tune. Loewe was at the piano while Lerner was indisposed in the bathroom, and when the former began playing a melody the latter liked, he later recalled he jumped up, "[his] trousers still clinging to [his] ankles, and made his way to the living room. 'Play that again,' he said. And that melody ended up being the title song for Gigi."[16]

Following completion of the film, it was previewed in Santa Barbara. Audience reaction was overwhelmingly favorable, but Lerner and Loewe were dissatisfied with the result. Lerner felt it was twenty minutes too long and most of the action too slow. The changes he proposed would cost an additional $300,000, money Freed was loath to spend. The songwriting team offered to buy 10% of the film for $300,000, then offered $3 million for the print. Impressed with their belief in the film, MGM executives agreed to the changes, which included eleven days of considerable reshooting, putting the project at $400,000 over budget. At a preview in Encino, audience reaction changed from "appreciation to affection", and Lerner felt the film finally was ready for release. It premiered at the Royale Theatre, a legitimate theatrical venue in New York City, on May 15, 1958.[18]

The film's luck extended to Best Original Song as well, where the title tune, "performed" by Louis Jourdan (I say "performed," given he's really more talking than actually singing here), emerged triumphant. Like the rest of Gigi, "Gigi" is nice to look at - all of the scenery surrounding Jourdan in this scene is gorgeously shot - but the song on its own terms isn't anything in the slightest to write home about.

For me, it's pretty much a three-way jumpball among "A Certain Smile" (performed by Johnny Mathis), "Almost in Your Arms" (Sam Cooke) and "To Love and Be Loved" (Frank Sinatra) - three vocal legends, though none of the songs really quite pop. I give the Mathis track the slight edge over Sinatra's - there is a nice aura of Technicolor romance to it, even if, like a lot of the Mathis discography, it borders on the overly sentimental. The Cooke track, while charming, is a little too short to leave much of an impact.

While that might have seemed like a relatively calm and composed comment, a cryptic tweet of Joe's led fans to believe that he was secretly penning breakup songs about Gigi. In February he tweeted, "Always fun writing a song that's gonna piss someone off." He finished the tweet with that sly-smiling emoji.

gigi broke through in early 2021 after sharing a raw and unfiltered perspective of grief, "Celene" which was dedicated to her older sister who passed away that year. The song came together after she experienced an intense emotional reckoning. "One night I had a mental breakdown after reading something she had written to me before she passed away," she recalls. "I just lost it. I went to my guitar, and the first few lines of that song were what came out of my mouth. I feel like that was the first time I processed that experience through writing. I tried to write about it for a while but I never knew what to say. It was the first time I reached that part of myself in the way I knew how to best. As intense as it felt, it was relieving too. Following the initial virality of "Celene," came "Sometimes (Backwood)" which swirls together purposeful strumming and her strong alto, evoking the otherworldly energy of dream pop with the unfiltered emotionalism of modern bedroom pop. "I was so caught off guard in the best way possible. It's so strange to think that you can have such a pure moment with yourself, completely unaware of where that moment is going to take you."

Elsewhere on the EP, "When She Smiles" pairs plaintive vocals with image-rich lyrics that recount a doomed infatuation. "Glue" is a regret-wracked cut that knots together intricate metaphors ("And you are glue / And in all that I do / You're dripping onto me / You don't know how to let me be") before the swooning instrumental hits its peak. It's clearly the work of a songwriter who has an intimate understanding of her growing gifts.

Born in New Jersey and raised in Florida, gigi began writing songs in her teens and taught herself to play guitar, piano and ukulele. In high school, she formed the fuzz-folk band Wendy Lane with some friends including producer and multi-instrumentalist Aidan Hobbs, who is now one of her chief collaborators. She briefly attended Berklee College of Music before relocating to New York, where she began working on the songs that would make up her debut EP.

Since releasing "Sometimes (Backwood)" in 2021, gigi has been on the ascent, playing the 2021 Austin City Limits festival, opening for Coldplay at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa and will spend fall 2022 supporting Noah Cyrus on The Hardest Part Tour.

"I have a succinct memory of being in college and it was during my first few weeks. I listen to music while I walk because I'm able to soak in my surroundings and it's given me an appreciation. I had a moment with this song and it was dramatic." Gigi finds herself in the opening slot for Cyrus' tour, which makes a stop in Albuquerque at the El Rey Theater at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5. The New York-based singer-songwriter recently released the single, "Glue." "(The song) was written in late 2020 as I was grieving my older sister, who had passed away," gigi says. "This is my best attempt to capture how visceral, all-consuming and complicated my grief was. It was one month prior to a breakup. I think the song captures the desperation I felt. I was holding onto the safest and most familiar thing to me, which was the relationship I was in at the time." That's when the well opened up. Whatever I'm writing about is what my outer circumstances in the world are. I've gotten comfortable with writing and with myself. I know if I'm in a right situation in my life and the minute that I feel that I'm holding back, I know this isn't the situation for me." With "Glue," gigi did have some difficulty opening up with the writing because she had to be vulnerable. "I was nervous to share what I wrote," she says. "It had weight on me at the time because it was my reality. Now that the song is out, it's not my reality anymore and I can share with a healed perspective. I remember being so happy after the song was written. I was happy." Whether it's at home or on tour, gigi aims to keep her mental health in check. "One of the things I do is I got to the gym as much as possible," she says. "It's a good way to connect with music and I feel like I listen to music a lot. I feel grounded and it's a way of meditating for me. In those moments, it's the only thing I worry about. My feet are moving to the beat and it helps me." e24fc04721
