Get-together and career advice for young mathematicians
September 27, 2021
DMV-ÖMG Annual Conference 2021
This event gives young scientists the opportunity to get to know each other, and to receive career advice from role models with various career backgrounds.
Program
15:00 - 15:15
Introduction
15:15 - 16:00
Career development advise, Part I
Experts from both in and out of academia share their career experiences with the participants. Each role model is situated at a virtual table which can be joint only by a limited number of participants. This gives the young scientists the opportunity to discuss career paths with the experts. After each discussion round of approximately 20 minutes the participants switch tables.
16:00 - 16:30
Break
16:30 - 17:15
Career development advise, Part II
We continue the career development advice with new role models.
17:15 - 17:30
Break
17:30 - 18:00
Field-specific get-together
The participants choose zoom break-out rooms depending on their scientific interests and have a tea-time chat about their research.
18:00 - open end
Informal after-party
In an informal atmosphere the participants follow up on connections made in the earlier sessions, and in addition meet new people.
Our role models
Myfanwy Evans
Myf is a professor at the University of Potsdam, where she investigates geometric and topological modelling of soft and biological systems.
Myf moved to Europe receiving the Humbolt postdoctoral fellowship after graduating in mathematics and physics at ANU, Australia. She is an awardee of the prestigious Emmy Noether Programme.
Myf has two children.
Sebastian Dvorak-Novak
Sebastian has experience in many different career paths. After his Bachelor in Accordion music, he studied mathematics and did a PhD about the mathematics of evolutionary biology at IST Austria. Afterwards he worked as a consultant and project manager for EFS Consulting for two years. Then he was in the Research&Development department of Upstream Mobility for two years.
Currently Sebastian is a Business Analysist at the Zülke group. On the side he attends a training to become a systemic coach.
Sebastian has one child.
Carola Schönlieb
Carola is a professor for applied mathematics at the University of Cambridge, specializing in the mathematics of digital image and video processing. She has many interdisciplinary collaborations with natural scientists and even artists.
Born and raised in Austria, Carola studied at the University of Salzburg and at the University of Vienna. She left Austria for her PhD at the University of Cambridge, where she returned after a post doc at the Georg-August University Goettingen.
Carola won the prestigious Whitehead price "for her spectacular contributions to the mathematics of image analysis".
Nick Joneleit
Born and raised in Berlin, Nick finished his masters in mathematics at the Technical University Berlin, in the field of functional analysis.
After finishing his studies, Nick started working for the company PSI Metals where he is now managing IT projects for steel mills.
Nick's job brought him around the world -- he spent a year on a business trip in Australia, and now works in Pittsburgh, US.
Nevena Palić
After finishing her undergraduate studies in mathematics in Belgrade, Serbia, Nevena moved to Germany to pursue a PhD in topology at the Free University Berlin.
Nevena decided to quit academia after finishing her PhD in 2018, and since then works as a data scientist for Sparkassen Rating und Risikosysteme GmbH in Berlin, developing various machine learning solutions for financial institutions.
Timo de Wolff
Timo is a professor at the Technical University Braunschweig. He works on applied algebra, in particular nonnegativity of real polynomials and polynomial optimization.
After graduating in mathematics at the Goethe University Frankfurt/Main, Timo spent three years in Texas, US, and led a research group at the Technical University in Berlin.
Timo is an awardee of the prestigious Emmy Noether Programme, and a member of the junge Akademie.
Julia König
After finishing her PhD in mathematics from the University of Hamburg, Julia first worked as a manager and data scientist for Sixt and Bosch, doing freelance work on the side.
In 2018 she founded the start-up Ehrenmüller (called after her maiden name) in the Allgäu area in Germany. Julia's start-up provides artificial intelligence solutions for medium-sized companies.
From time to time Julia also lectures courses at the Hochschule Neu-Ulm
Michaela Szölgyenyi
Michaela is a professor for Stochastic Processes at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria. At her young age, she is already head of the Department of Statistics.
After finishing two Master's degrees, and her PhD at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, she did postdocs at Vienna University of Economics and Business and at ETH Zurich.
In 2020, Michaela secured funding for 14 PhD students in the field of optimization as part of an FWF doc.funds project.
