There is much research on the use of gesture in learning. Gesture has been shown to improve problem solving, communication and memory (see "The Extended Mind by Annie Murphy Paul for a good tour of the research).
This site is a resource for teachers who teach scientific vocabulary. While it is not specifically a site for teachers with deaf pupils, the gestures chosen are taken from British Sign Language. Where several variations for signs are available, we have identified those signs which we believe best capture the scientific aspect. There is regional variance in BSL and so the signs here may not be the most appropriate for the children in your class.
If you do have BSL communicators in you class or school, we recommend you consult with them before choosing the gesture to teach you class.
