Eastin graduated with honors for her BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Iowa, and in 2010 she earned her MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago. So much more than sewing classes, Fashion First Workshops is a Fashion Program for kids and teens interested in fashion design, learning how to design clothes and how to use a sewing machine, and having fun with other young fashion designers. We teach fashion sewing classes and how to design clothes, as well as the fundamentals of fashion sketching and portfolio development.

Before becoming a custom wedding dressmaker, I had an unusual introduction to sewing which took me from absolute beginner to sewing professionally for Broadway in only 5 years. I did not learn to sew as a child and I did not attend design school or fashion school. My MFA is in Costume Production.

I think learning anything as a beginner is challenging. To start those first steps are most crucial and they decide where you land up.

One of the most important thing when we sew is opening the wrongly done stitches. This thing takes out all the motivation from new sewing enthusiasts.

The College for Kids program, JUS10H University, taught Hansel and other students around her age some elements of marketing in the fashion industry during a week in July. The instructor, Justin Haynes of Springfield, discussed marketing in the fashion industry as well as other concepts. Teenagers between 13 and 16 got hands-on experience with sewing. They also learned the difference between fashion and style.

Haynes invited members from the community to the final day when the students presented their fashion projects. At the beginning of the week, students were asked to take an item of clothing out of their closet and repurpose it into a new fashion statement. Over the week, they put their newly learned sewing and hemming skills to work to make imaginative shirts, blouses, skirts and more.

I learned fashion design, sewing and tailoring when I was 32. I was NOT one of those people who sewed with their parents, making things for myself since I was a kid. I have been fascinated by fashion from when I was a kid though and after a bit of reflecting, I know how it started: Rashida's Dress Up Closet.

Learn to Sew a Dress (3 week course)

This is more of a Beginner plus / Intermediate course so completing one of the above classes first would be ideal or if you are feeling really confident after your beginner classes or have similar ability.

In this 3 week course, you will learn more sewing skills like understitiching, sewing a waist casing, overlocking and hemming a circle skirt using the Tilly and The Buttons Lotta dress pattern

Our Beyond The Pattern courses include advanced sewing and design techniques, how to fit to your body shape, wardrobe planning, pattern matching and more!

Our lessons are designed to teach exactly what you'd learn at a top fashion school. To get the most from our lessons, follow along with the teacher in each lesson, doing exactly what they're doing, using your own tools and materials, e.g. fabrics, sewing machine, etc. When you're done with each lesson, you'll be able to show people the many wonderful garments or other projects you've made.

Once you're comfortable with two-dimensional fashion drawing, move on to three-dimensional designing, i.e. "draping". Draping is about designing directly on a dress form using a basic cloth called muslin. Draping is, in our opinion, the center of the fashion education universe. Go to our site, click on our Lessons menu, and then click Draping. Our first draping lesson explains dress forms. Buy a good one. Don't buy the cheapest one you can find. And for heaven's sake, don't buy a "store mannequin." You need a dress form that can handle years of direct pinning. At the top of our Draping page we provide a recommended lesson order. Make sure that you proceed in that order. Our "Bodice Sloper" lesson is where the real learning begins. You can feel confident that you've mastered Draping's basics after you've finished all our beginner draping lessons. You can always come back to our more advanced draping lessons once you have learned the fundamentals of pattern making, the next and last discipline you simply must know to be truly well-rounded.

I have made quilts for many years and I really needed to use up some of the scraps that I have been accumulating.. This quilt is baby sized but makes a nice lap quilt in this same size. You can easily adapt this to any size and you don't have to use scraps.

I usually make my quilts by hand. Several times I have been asked by someone to show them how to sew a quilt. Since most people do not have easy access to a sewing machine, it is a good learn to 'hand sew' project. Once you know if you enjoy sewing, you can decide if you want to invest in special equipment like a sewing machine.

I just read through this 'ible. I was looking for all the misspellings. What I found was that this could look a little intimidating to a beginner. That was not my intent. Once you get comfortable with sewing, it really goes very fast and you will have an impressive skill. Keep your first project small--so you see success rather than frustration.

I started sewing when I was nine. My mother always sewed all my clothes as well as her own. I was always wanting to make something of my own. On Xmas of 1969 I received my very first sewing machine. It was pink with a small foot pedal and operated on batteries. I could use left over fabrics to make clothes for my doll. I have been sewing since then. I still have that little machine on shelf in my sewing room.

What a great gift learning to sew has been.

I started sewing with a machine when I was nine through 4-H when I made my first skirt. Then I made lots of skirts in different fabrics, lined and unlined. Then we learned to make dresses and I made all of my clothes thanks to the great technical instruction of my 4-H leader and the County Extension classes, including a pants fitting class by Nancy Zieman way back when. I still take classes from reputable instructors to keep up with changing fabrics and notions to produce polished, well-constructed garments and home-dec items.
