The less strenuous Guatemalan volcano tour

I have access to a beautiful colonial-style house in a gated community (so nice and safe) just south of Ciudad Vieja, 11km (6.8mi) North East from the summit of Fuego. The house has a fully equipped kitchen and double rooms that are all en-suite. I aim to arrive at the house for mid-afternoon. That allows enough time to get settled and talk about geology whilst on the terrace for sunset. We then prepare a Guatemalan style BBQ with steak and at least 6 vegetarian side dishes. Weather and activity permitting we should see the volcano erupting from the terrace but after dinner we drive further south to view the volcano from the side of the road from a distance of 7.5kms (4.6mi). There is a police patrol car at the viewpoint so it’s nice and safe to be parked up by the side of the road for a couple of hours watching the volcano erupt.

Breakfast burritos, fresh orange juice and Guatemalan coffee for breakfast is followed by further discussions of the various hazards that Fuego poses to the communities located around the volcano. Once packed up we return to Antigua for late morning or on to Lake Atitlan, depending on customer travel plans. I prefer picking people up from Antigua and then providing the transfer to Lake Atitlan as that gives us the opportunity to drive down onto the coastal plain and cross some of the impressive valleys that drain the flanks of the volcano. We also get to see the vast sugar cane plantations and rubber trees when driving on the coastal highway.
