Georgios K. Ouzounis

Biographical Note

Georgios is a Head of ML Engineering in AtlasAI at Palo Alto, a Visiting Professor (Deep Learning) at Kauno Kolegija / University of Applied Sciences in Kaunas, Lithuania, and a Global Lecturer at University of Arizona.

Georgios Ouzounis has spent the last two decades exploring the intersections of image analytics, computer vision and machine learning. At AtlasAI, he challenges a talented team of machine learning engineers to rethink existing paradigms as they accelerate progress for the greater good.

A widely cited scientist and engineer, Georgios has a track record for developing data-driven solutions that shift paradigms and solve critical challenges. As AtlasAI’s Head of ML Engineering, he spearheads the development of products that apply deep learning to challenging areas such as continental-scale remote sensing image analytics. In addition to guiding AtlasAI’s Innovation Team, he also oversees research into new technologies and paradigms—always with an eye on the future.

Soon after beginning his career, Georgios discovered the power of pairing computer vision with machine learning. His first intelligent system, which used computer vision and AI to weigh live fish non-intrusively, delivered remarkable gains in accuracy and had a direct environmental impact that solidified his passion for the discipline. The data scientist spent a decade spearheading computer vision products for medical imaging before joining the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre. In this role, Georgios leveraged satellite imagery along with advanced graph technology and deep learning to help policymakers understand, evaluate and respond to humanitarian crises and disasters such as the Haiti 2010 earthquake in real time. Georgios’ experience also includes overseeing data-driven applications for the consumer electronics, insurance and finance sectors. He draws from this rich expertise as AtlasAI’s leading machine learning visionary.

A global authority in intelligent image analytics, Georgios has delivered numerous presentations in academic, government and industry settings. He most recently delivered keynotes on AI and healthcare at the Western University of Health Sciences’ Innovation Day 2019 and medical image data science at Ai4 Healthcare 2019. He holds numerous patents and has published his research in nearly 50 widely cited academic articles.

Georgios earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics and Natural Sciences from the University of Groningen, Netherlands. He is a visiting professor at Lithuania’s Kauno Kolegija / Kaunas University of Applied Sciences where he teaches an immersive course on deep learning to future data scientists.

Georgios is a highly cited author and keynote speaker in high-tech related events.
