In Frank L. Baum’s first book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), the reader is introduced to the Land of Oz itself. As the story progresses several different governmental structures and policies are revealed throughout the story. Analyzing the main book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and the several canonical books that follow, a database of the actual political structure can be established to display the governments in the Land of Oz.
The Land of Oz is divided under four compass directions of jurisdictions which give power to the Wicked Witches of the East and West, Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, Locasta/Tattypoo, the Good Witch of the North, and the mysterious Wizard, who presides over the central Emerald City. Further on in the canon the reader is introduced to the monarchy with Princess Ozma of Oz, the fairy princess and true ruler of Oz, who is a friend of Dorothy Gale. The government structure ranges from a monarchy to an absolute monarchy, with several hierarchical figures answering to or even ignoring superiors in some cases.
This digital humanities project is an evolving database, with the Ozian canon being taken into account to achieve accuracy and legitimacy, with respect to L. Frank Baum, the first Royal Historian of Oz.
