Geomicrobiology at SNU

Our research interests lie at the intersection between microbiology and geology. Microbes are involved in the vast majority of chemical and biochemical processes on the Earth’s surface. We are interested in utilizing the geochemical fingerprints of these processes to reconstruct the interplay between microbes and their environments. This requires both laboratory experiments, which enable us to isolate specific phenomena that we want to investigate, and fieldwork, which allows examining hypotheses in a real world setting. These efforts not only improve the understanding of biogeochemical processes in modern ecosystems but also strengthen the interpretation of geochemical signals preserved in sedimentary rocks.
