Generative Models are AI models that can generate data. Recently researchers have shown that by training these models on large amounts of data (text data from the internet and images) these models learn to understand the regularities of our text and image world so well that they can generate responses to questions and create new images with surprising fidelity. This heralds a new era in which computers can assist humans to carry out tasks more efficiently than ever with significant opportunities for society, science and industry. However, these advances need significant research still – how to make them train efficiently on different problems, how to understand their reliability and adherence to ethical norms.
The overarching objective of this EPSRC funded Hub is to create tools that UK Industry, Science and Government can use to create Generative Models (GMs) and interact with them easily. Within this the objectives are: (i) make GMs more easily available and fine-tuneable (ii) facilitate the formation of startup companies using GMs (iii) understand how GMs can be reliable and quantify their own uncertainty (iv) make GMs more usable for design, with humans in the design loop (v) use GMs to preserve privacy and ensure fairness (vi) understand the legal rights regarding user data and responsibilities relating to malfunctioning generations from GMs (vii) create next generation automation to understand what tasks users are carrying out and suggesting shortcuts and assistance (viii) create next generation generative tools for audio, video and games (ix) create generative modelling tools for science including how to generate molecules with desired properties (x) create generative models and foundation models for healthcare.
