If you want professional-grade open-ear isolation and a wired connection specifically optimized for high-resolution studio monitoring during calls, choose Generic Sonicast direm E3; if you need lightweight on-ear precision with an extended warranty package for critical listening sessions, choose Sony MDR-M1.
• Generic Sonicast direm E3: Offers a world-first reference standard tuning with a single SF-driver for pure analog sound, but its in-ear design requires a specific fit to achieve the claimed noise isolation.
• Sony MDR-M1: Delivers ultra-wideband frequency response from 5Hz to 80kHz with a comfortable on-ear form factor, yet it lacks the deep-seal isolation of in-ear monitors.
• The Verdict: The E3 is built for audiophiles and creators demanding sonic truth without digital coloration, while the MDR-M1 serves producers who prioritize wide-range accuracy and long-wearing comfort.
The Generic Sonicast direm E3 is engineered for a very specific type of user: someone who treats their audio setup as a tool for professional creation rather than just entertainment. This isn't a casual pair of earbuds; it is marketed as the first earphones to meet a professional sound reference standard developed for musicians, engineers, and content creators. If your workflow involves mixing tracks, recording voiceovers, or simply demanding that every nuance of a podcast or call be heard exactly as intended, the E3 speaks your language. The core of this device is the Next-Generation SF-DRIVER, a single-unit acoustic engine designed to deliver balanced sound across all frequencies without the complexity of multi-driver setups that can sometimes introduce phase issues.
What sets the E3 apart in the realm of wired audio is its commitment to pure analog transmission. By utilizing a 3.5mm connection, it bypasses digital-to-analog converters entirely, ensuring that what you hear is the raw, uncolored signal. This "studio-quality sound without digital distortion" philosophy makes it an excellent choice for those sensitive to the artificial processing often found in Bluetooth or USB-C audio solutions. The ORZA Acoustic Tuning and GAMIN Calibration technologies further refine this experience, providing ultra-fine control over tonality that appeals to anyone who has ever felt that off-the-shelf headphones sounded "too bright" or "muddy."

However, the E3 is not for everyone. Its in-ear placement means you are relying on a physical seal to achieve the noise-isolating properties mentioned in its description. If you have ears that are particularly sensitive to pressure or cannot tolerate the sensation of having something inserted into the ear canal, this product will likely be uncomfortable for long periods. Furthermore, because it is a dedicated wired solution, it is strictly tethered to devices with a 3.5mm jack or a compatible adapter. It is best suited for stationary setups like a home office desk connected to a PC, laptop, or console where cable management is manageable, rather than for active users who need freedom of movement.
The Sony MDR-M1 targets a different demographic entirely: the professional on-the-go mixer and the serious listener who prioritizes the comfort of an on-ear design over the total isolation of an in-ear monitor. These headphones are built with a closed acoustic structure, which provides accurate sound isolation while maintaining the ability to hear some ambient noise—a crucial feature for professionals who need to stay aware of their surroundings while working. The standout specification here is the frequency response, which stretches from an incredibly low 5Hz to a staggering 80kHz. This ultra-wideband playback capability ensures that even the most subtle details in a recording, from the deepest sub-bass rumble to the highest harmonic overtones, are reproduced with precision.
Comfort is clearly a primary design driver for the MDR-M1. Being an on-ear model, it rests lightly on the outer ear rather than sealing inside the canal, making it a viable option for marathon mixing sessions where ear fatigue is a real concern. The design includes folding features, suggesting portability for professionals who move between studios or work in various locations. The inclusion of volume control directly on the headphones adds a layer of convenience that allows for quick adjustments without reaching for a source device. Additionally, the bundle comes with a 27-month Axiom Care extension, offering peace of mind regarding durability and long-term support, which is a significant value add for equipment used daily in demanding environments.
Despite these strengths, the MDR-M1 has limitations that define who should skip it. Because they are on-ear rather than in-ear, they do not provide the same level of passive noise cancellation as the E3. In a noisy coffee shop or a busy open-plan office, the MDR-M1 might let in more external sound, potentially interfering with the clarity of a call or a mix. They are also not water-resistant, so they are strictly for dry environments. If your priority is complete immersion in silence, these might feel too leaky compared to a sealed in-ear alternative. They are best for the producer who needs accuracy and comfort above all else, provided they are working in a relatively controlled acoustic environment.
• Best for pure analog fidelity → Generic Sonicast direm E3 (No DAC needed, direct 3.5mm connection).
• Best for ultra-wide frequency range → Sony MDR-M1 (5Hz to 80kHz response).
• Best for long mixing sessions → Sony MDR-M1 (On-ear design reduces ear canal pressure).
• Best for noise isolation → Generic Sonicast direm E3 (In-ear design creates a physical seal).
• Best for durability support → Sony MDR-M1 (Includes 27-month extended care program).
• Best for portable flexibility → Sony MDR-M1 (Folding design and on-ear profile).
• Best for critical detail retrieval → Generic Sonicast direm E3 (SF-DRIVER and GAMIN calibration).
• Best for awareness of surroundings → Sony MDR-M1 (Closed but non-intrusive on-ear fit).
After weighing the technical specifications and the intended use cases for both devices, I would choose the Generic Sonicast direm E3 if my primary goal was to execute professional calls and audio work where sonic purity is non-negotiable. The commitment to a reference standard and the elimination of digital conversion artifacts make it the superior tool for anyone who needs to hear exactly what is there, nothing more and nothing less. While the Sony MDR-M1 offers impressive frequency specs and a great warranty, the E3's focus on "sonic truth" through its specialized driver and analog path gives it the edge for a user who values accuracy over brand prestige or extended warranty coverage. It is the better choice for best open ear headphones for calls where the listener demands a transparent, uncolored audio experience that lets the nuances of speech and production shine through without interference.
Neither device features active noise cancellation electronics, but the Generic Sonicast direm E3 offers superior passive isolation due to its in-ear design, which physically blocks more external sound than the on-ear Sony MDR-M1.
The Sony MDR-M1 features a folding mechanism typical of professional studio monitors, allowing for compact storage, whereas the Sonicast E3 uses a flexible fabric cable designed to resist tangling rather than rotating ear cups.
While pricing fluctuates, the Sony MDR-M1 includes a substantial 27-month Axiom Care extension alongside the factory warranty, offering significantly longer protection coverage than the standard 1-year manufacturer warranty found with the Sonicast E3.
