The Graduate Education in Medical Sciences (GEMS) program is a structured educational experience for MIT PhD students interested in working at the intersection where engineering and science meet medicine and real world healthcare. GEMS scholars learn how advances in basic science and engineering become medically relevant therapies and tools for the improvement of human health.

The Institute for Medical Engineering and Science (IMES) offers GEMS through collaboration among MIT, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital. An award from Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) initially funded GEMS as part of a program to encourage graduate schools to integrate medical knowledge and an understanding of clinical practice into PhD curricula.

Group for Environmental Medicine and Sustainability (GEMS) aims to bring awareness to environmental issues as they pertain to public health and medical education, to take initiative and advocate for change at the local level, and form lasting relationships with the community and educational facilities to facilitate future endeavors related to pertinent environmental issues. We founded, organize and run the climate change and human health elective through CCGH, which has run for three semesters and will be running for the '23-'24 academic year. Our elective touches on health topics such as respiratory health, dermatology, epidemiology, health system quality improvement, radiation oncology, OB-GYN and how they are impacted by climate change. We hope to emphasize the important role climate change has, does, and will play in our patient's health and what we as future physicians can do to counsel and enact change on both a micro and macro level.

GEMS provides EMS practitioners at all levels with the skills and knowledge to address the unique medical, social, environmental and communications challenges of older adults. Developed by NAEMT, in partnership with the American Geriatrics Society, GEMS empowers EMS practitioners to help improve medical outcomes and quality of life for geriatric patients.

I heard GEMS were those who already applied to medical school and did not get in. While I was at georgetown, students from our biotech master's program had to take the same biochem class with GEMS. Many of students from my biotech master's program looked negatively upon GEMS students b/c they acted as if they were already med students and better than biotech students. I don't know where that came from but I could see there was a silly competition between them. Some students thought they were losers. I mean I heard all kinds of bad things about GEMS. I would carefully research more about the program.

I don't know much about the GEMS program so please do not be discouraged or drawn back by what I say here. I've heard from my classmates that all the students (GEMS) in that year 2002 did not get into medical school after finishing their program. Again don't count on this BS rumors b/c there are some students out there who personally hate GEMS. But it's a great program that really prepares for medical school. Georgetown also has a 1 year special master's program in physiology and biophysics only for students who wish to get into medical school. But you have to have at least 27 on MCAT and 3.0 GPA to get into that program. I would say more than 90% of students in that program get into medical school.Ā
