Teachers will find the specification an ideal vehicle to make International GCSE Biology enjoyable and provide the right level of challenge. It allows the freedom to teach biology in a variety of ways and incorporates key themes and concepts throughout. It is the perfect platform to study at A-level.

This specification is designed to be taken over two years. This is a linear qualification. In order to achieve the award, students must complete all assessments at the end of the course and in the same series.

All four International GCSE Science specifications include section 5.2 on Prohibited Combinations: centres cannot enter a student in a separate OxfordAQA International GCSE Science and the OxfordAQA International GCSE Combined Science in the same series.

You will study essential knowledge and key concepts in Biology, as well as the practical skills needed for investigative study. Topics covered include Cell biology, Genetics and Global challenges. Teachers will ensure through the science curriculum that all pupils develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. That they develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them and that they are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

The course is organised into eight topics: Cell biology; Organisation; Infection and response; Bioenergetics; Homeostasis and response; Inheritance; Variation Evolution and Ecology. The Biology content of the new specification covers many exciting and relevant topics including cloning, monoclonal antibodies, stem cells, plant diseases, the brain, selective breeding, and maintaining biodiversity. Practical activities include testing the effects of antibiotics on bacterial growth and measuring populations of organisms in a habitat.

The scientific content will be assessed in two papers each worth 50% of the overall marks. Each paper will assess knowledge and understanding of the different topics. The topics will be assessed in two external paper examinations at the end of the course, each lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes. The examinations cover both foundation and higher tier levels. The questions include multiple choice, structured closed short answer, and open response questions.

This Level 2 GCSE qualification in Biology teaches you the skills and knowledge detailed in the AQA GCSE Biology single award syllabus. You will have access to a wide range of online materials provided. Regular reading from the course textbook is encouraged to maximise your success and grade at the end of the year.

The course is fast-paced, so good attendance is required to ensure you keep up with the content and do not miss essential practical work. It is a popular course for people looking for a career change or looking to meet the requirements to have a science GCSE for further study.

The course covers the theoretical foundations of biology of and includes; Cell biology, Infection and response, Bioenergetics, Homeostasis and response, Inheritance, variation and evolution as well as Ecology. There is a strong practical theme to the course to help you understand the theory and develop your practical and data analysis skills.

This is an adult course and students should be 19+ from the first day of the programme. Due to the demands of the course, we do not recommend this is done in addition to another full-time course, or in conjunction with the study of GCSE English and Mathematics as students find such a workload too demanding.

Students wishing to be entered for the higher tier grades 4-9 should discuss this with the tutor and demonstrate they are consistently able to work at a grade 5 level or higher in assessments and mock exams.

Many students use this qualification as a steppingstone to a Level 3 course of their choosing. A large proportion of students go on study healthcare professions such as Paramedics, Nursing and Midwifery and some go on to PGCE courses or Access to Higher Education Diploma courses, available at York College University Centre which enables them to study university degrees and higher-level qualifications.

All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment.

The GCSE biology syllabus covers a number of subjects, with topics ranging from cloning to global warming. In this article, we take a look at the topics students are expected to know ahead of the exam.

Paper one covers topics 1-4: cell biology; organisation; infection and response and bioenergetics. Paper two covers topics 5-7: homeostasis and response; inheritance; variation and evolution; ecology and key ideas.

Students should be able to explain how the main subcellular structures, including the nucleus, cell membranes, mitochondria, chloroplasts in plant cells and plasmids in bacterial cells are related to their functions.

Students need to understand the three overall stages of the cell cycle but do not need to know the different phases of the mitosis stage. They should also be able to recognise and describe situations in given contexts where mitosis is occurring.

Students should be able to describe cancer as a result of changes in cells that lead to uncontrolled growth and division. This part of the GCSE physics syllabus covers benign tumours and malignant tumours.

Students should be able to describe how monoclonal antibodies are produced and how they can be used. Students are not expected to recall any specific tests or treatments but given appropriate information they should be able to explain how they work.

Students should be able to explain that homeostasis is the regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function in response to internal and external changes.

Students must be able to describe the principles of hormonal coordination and control by the human endocrine system. From a diagram of the human body, students should be able to identify the position of; pituitary gland; pancreas; thyroid; adrenal gland; ovary; and testes.

Students should be able to understand the concept of probability in predicting the results of a single gene cross, but recall that most phenotype features are the result of multiple genes rather than single gene inheritance.

Studying biology will help you develop a curiosity about the natural world, give an insight into how science works and give an appreciation of its relevance to everyday life. The scope and nature of this biology course is broad, coherent and practical.

You will develop an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science, through different types of scientific enquiries that help you to answer scientific questions about biological topics.

With English, Maths and a science GCSE such as this one, you could progress onto an Access course in Health science or Midwifery and Nursing, a Btec Level 2 or 3 in Applied Science. Alternatively you could use this to meet the qualifications for Initial Teacher Training programmes or Nursing training programmes.

While attending the introductory course you will complete an initial assessment to identify your starting point, current knowledge of biology and your commitment to achieving the qualification.
