Tips For Teaching Math

Below are just a few tips to teach math. More information can be found in the Tutor Handbook that you received during the two day Tutor Training Workshop. If you have any questions you can contact the Adult Literacy Program Coordinator.

Teaching Math

  • Ask your learner what skills in math they have and what they want to learn.

  • Relate math skills to daily life.

  • Can your learner:

    • Use a calculator?

    • Use a ruler?

    • Use estimation strategies?

    • Ask questions?

    • Balance a cheque book?

    • Read a thermometer?

    • Calculate a tip?

    • Read and interpret charts and graphs?

  • Observe and analyze the kinds of computational errors your learner makes and then teach the necessary skills.

  • Teach your learner strategies for solving word problems.

  • Stress that HOW you do a problem is just as important as the correct answer.

  • Use "hands-on" manipulatives when teaching math concepts. For example, use a ruler to measure objects, or coins to count change.

  • Encourage frequent practice so that your learner can master these skills. So often our learners didn't understand a concept in the classroom and were left behind when the class moved onto a new skill. This time ensure success by allowing your learner time to really learn these skills.
