Since living in Nevada, I have explored a few outdoor art museums and love it!
Nestled amidst the haunting ruins of the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada, lies an unexpected oasis of art and creativity—the Goldwell Open Air Museum.
This unique outdoor gallery, situated in the heart of the Mojave Desert, has become a captivating destination for art enthusiasts and curious travellers alike.
History: The Goldwell Open Air Museum was born in 1984 when Belgian artist Albert Szukalski and his wife, Karolina, created a remarkable sculpture called "The Last Supper." This life-sized art installation depicts ghostly figures, shrouded in white fabric, gathered around a long table. Its location in the barren desert backdrop of Rhyolite adds an ethereal and thought-provoking element to the artwork.
The Sculptures of Goldwell: Since its inception, the Goldwell Open Air Museum has continued to grow, featuring an impressive collection of outdoor sculptures that harmoniously blend with the surrounding environment. Each artwork offers a unique perspective and invites contemplation.
Let's embark on a journey to explore the intriguing world of the Goldwell Open Air Museum and discover how it has transformed the desolate landscape of Rhyolite into an artistic haven.
I gently squeezed into one.
"The Last Supper" by Albert Szukalski:
As the original inspiration for the open-air museum, this life-sized sculpture continues to captivate visitors. Its enigmatic presence prompts contemplation on themes of transience, spirituality, and the passage of time.
These ghostly figures are amazing to see up close!
"Ghost Rider" by Albert Szukalski
This iconic sculpture stands as a towering figure overlooking the desert landscape. Composed of welded sheets of metal, it captures the essence of a ghostly horse and rider, seemingly frozen in time.
Lady Desert: The Venus of Nevada" by Dr. Hugo Heyrman
This striking sculpture depicts a female figure emerging from the desert floor. The contrast between the figure's smooth white surface and the rugged desert terrain enhances the sense of surrealism and mystery.
This statue is huge! it's seen from all points and really stands out in the desert.
"Icara" by Charles Albert Szukalski
Symbolizing the desire to explore new frontiers, "Icara" features a figure with wings, poised for flight. The sculpture invites viewers to reflect on the human pursuit of freedom and the quest for the unknown.
"Sit Here!" by Sofie Siegmann
This whimsical installation consists of a large, red chair positioned amidst the desert landscape. Inviting visitors to take a seat, encourages introspection and contemplation in the midst of the vastness of the Mojave Desert.
Please don't actually take a seat. The chair has experienced wear and tiles are starting to fall off.
There is so much more to see!
Walk a Labyrinth made of stones, other art installations and a historic ghost town.
When exploring Nevada this is defiantly a stop you want to make!
The Goldwell Outdoor Museum operates by donation only, so please remember to bring some cash and support this amazing art in the open space of the Nevada desert.
