I use the picture in picture feature daily. I like to have a YouTube video playing in the corner when I browse reddit, use my gps, or pretty much whenever I'm home. I also like the old android navigation with the three buttons. Before the beta, hitting the square button twice while in YouTube would move it into picture in picture and switch to the previous app. Now, it only switches to the previous app and doesn't trigger picture in picture. The only way to trigger it is to press the circle home button, which makes the double tap square button feature 70% less useful. Android 12 also changed how the audio works. When playing audio from a picture in picture source and switching to another source, it no longer straight cuts from one source to another. Instead, the audio fades out from YouTube and fades into the other source. Problem is, the fad plays both audio sources at the same time, making them cut each other off for a few seconds. It's super annoying, and way less practical then just shuting off the picture in picture YouTube and turning on the other source. But it gets worse. Constantly, the audio shutoff is triggered by things that aren't even playing audio, especially in reddit. I'll be playing a YouTube video while scrolling and a freaking GIF triggers YouTube to slowly fade out it's audio. Why would I want my video to pause everytime I look at a funny cat GIF? Even if I have my audio muted in reddit, it sometimes just goes out for no reason. I hate this new implementation so much.

As the Sony A7s is a microphone level input you will need to set the XLR outputs of the mixer to microphone level so as not to distort the built in pre-amps in the camera. Feeding it a line level (whether at -10dB or +4dB) signal will result in both a noisy and an overmodulating recording. Most recordists with a professional audio mixer (e.g. Sound Devices) should be able to do this.

Mick and myself put this setup to good use on a recent shoot where we had several interviews to film throughout a day. The setup worked flawlessly and allowed to production to use the in-camera sound. This not only saved them time in the edit when compared to syncing dual recordings but also allowed us to do quick playbacks on the day and review recordings too.

Double-system recording is a form of sound recording used in motion picture production whereby the sound for a scene is recorded on a machine that is separate from the camera or picture-recording apparatus.

Double-system recording is the standard procedure on motion pictures that are originally photographed on film. Recording sound-on-film directly at the time of photography has several technical limitations, and no professional motion picture camera supports this option, so all production sound is recorded on a separate recorder. This procedure requires that both camera and sound recorder share a very accurate time reference, and that the speed of the camera and sound recorders be carefully governed. Originally this was done with an electro-mechanical interlock between the camera and recorder, necessitating a physical link, a cable, between recorder and camera. As quartz-based timers came into common use, film cameras and sound recorders adopted these, and these were accurate enough to remove the need for an interlock cable.

Double-system recording requires that sound and picture be manually synchronized at the start of every "take" or camera run. This task was performed by the clapper slate. A clap sound on the recording is matched to the closed clapper image on the printed film, and thus the two recordings can be realigned into sync.

When the apparatus recording sound and image are the same, as in a video tape recorder, sound is recorded directly onto the picture medium, and this procedure is called 'single-system recording'. On feature films that are photographed on high-definition video, audio is often recorded on the video recorder and also on secondary recorder.

If you're using an S22 or S23, you have an additional option if you plan to use Dual recording. You can record the selfie front view video and the main rear view video as separate files! To do this, tap the Download icon (a box with a downward arrow) located at the top of the screen BEFORE you start recording. Two boxes will appear in the icon when it's set to download the videos individually. You can also tap this icon to save the video as previewed.

Note: This setting is not currently available on any other device besides the S22 series and S23 series.

Finally, dual-system sound forces you to pay close attention to your audio. It requires more setup, more operator involvement and some rec-ordkeeping. Extra work, yes, but the kind of extra effort that insures a quality product.

Another popular option is the Flash-based recorder. Edirol, M-Audio, Tascam and Zoom are a few of the manufacturers offering this type of small, portable recorder. Most have professional XLR microphone inputs, phantom power and quality input sections. Since there are no moving parts, these recorders offer extended run times and can record as much audio as you want, using removable cards. Back in the edit suite, you just plug the card into a reader and transfer the audio files to your hard drive.

The most flexible recording option is a laptop computer. Using a USB or FireWire audio interface and some recording software, a laptop-based recording system gives you the ultimate in control. There are many affordable audio interfaces that include two to eight microphone or line inputs. Recording media can be a hard drive, thumb drive or Flash memory card. Software can be as simple as Audacity or as complex as ProTools. With a laptop, you can mix and match your options to create the perfect audio recording system. be457b7860
