Gateway to Health Careers Home

A partnership of Coalition of Health Services, Amarillo ISD, SimCentral & the Texas Panhandle Coalition for Nursing in conjuction with the following college partners: Amarillo College, Texas Tech University, Health Sciences & West Texas A&M University

Purpose

The Gateway to Health Careers Project establishes health science programs in communities in the Texas panhandle outside Amarillo. It is designed to increase the healthcare workforce through a combination of distance learning and clinic experience.

Web-based didactic instruction is provided by Amarillo Area Center for Advanced Learning (AACAL) in Amarillo ISD, which utilizes the digital bridge supplied by Region 16 Education Service Center. Students gain their clinical experiences in SimCentral's Mobile Simulation Lab and through patient interactions provided by their community hospitals, long term care facilities or EMS services.

The project provides a clearly-articulated Program of Study in Health Science Technology where students can graduate high school with an endorsement in Public Service through the House Bill 5: Foundation High School Program.

Each year, Gateway serves nearly 400 students in the following partner high schools:

Highland Park, Sanford-Fritch, Borger, Bovina, Adrian, Dimmitt, Friona, Spearman, Canadian, Wellington, Tulia, Happy & Gruver.
