Home Page: Gary P. Arndt
The current singular purpose of this site is to host free software that I have created and want to share.
I have downloaded a number of very useful free tools over the years and really appreciate those that put their efforts into creating and sharing them. My intent here is to contribute in the same manner with some software I originally designed for my own use; perhaps someone else can also find it useful.
Please be aware that I vastly prefer a clean, minimal layout on web sites and have very little interest in spending time on fancy formatting and pictures and such. Further, the new Google sites design tool (which is unfortunately NOT optional) is a significant regression from the old "classics" site and therefore inhibits design choices I may have otherwise considered. For these reasons, this page may to some people appear to be somewhat lacking, but please do not take this as an indication of a lack of professionalism; the approach is intentionally clean and minimal.

mp3tool (mp3 file reordering tool)
(The links to the current and older versions are presented below at the end of the description in order to keep the presentation more well-organized)
Purpose:
Some mp3 media players will not automatically play files in alphabetical order, instead using the order in which they were copied onto the device (USB drive, SD card, etc.). This tool will fix that problem by rearranging the file creation order alphabetically. Note that although this was originally intended for mp3 files, it will process all directories and all files regardless of the type.
Details:
This is a clean and simple command-line tool. It has no need for an installer. It has been virus scanned. It is completely free and contains no adware/etc. It is a single file that does not require any additional files, add registry entries, etc. It does not have any prerequisites (no .Net libraries, etc.). It is extremely small and written using clean, efficient technologies (in other words, it is not bloatware).
Processing happens in-place; it will not recopy the files. No extra disk space is required and it works as efficiently as possible.
As a command-line tool, it must be run from a command prompt. Use either no parameters or "-HELP" for usage/etc. information.
When it was originally designed, it was tested on Windows XP but is likely to run on even older OS's (9x and such) and runs on some newer OS's (Vista, 7, etc.). I tested it primarily against USB drives used in media players such as NBox and Soundfly.
There are some other programs available, but I wrote this because I was not satisfied with the need to install bloated programs requiring installers and additional libraries and such. Further, the programs I came across also claimed to do things in a manner which would not have solved the problem cleanly (requiring the user to manually set the order rather than automatically alphabetizing, or the process copying the files to a hard drive and back, etc.).
I originally wrote this for my own use and it has continued to be very useful to me. If I enhance it at some point, I will post a new version (there are several things I'd like to do).
Notes:
- This tools is provided as-is and I am not to be held responsible for any problems arising from its use.
- This tool is free; no one else is allowed to sell this tool.
- This tool should not be posted elsewhere or included in other products. That said, links to this page are welcome and appreciated.

- Original version for reference or if there are any problems with the newer version
(Apologies that the link (on the classic version of the site) was broken for a while in December 2015. I am not sure why; Google must have changed the location where files are stored for some reason. I wrote them an email about it but did not receive an answer. So I will just try to check it occasionally and fix it again if it happens again. However, so far since I fixed it, it has been fine.)

Trizbort is a 3rd party tool for mapping Infocom games such as Zork. I did NOT write this tool, but did make a significant effort to fix some problems with it. I am posting my modified version in case others may also benefit from this effort.
Although I did not write this tool, it is open source and so I was able to modify it. The changes I made fix various bugs that prevent it from being run with older versions of .Net.
For example this fixes the following bug:
Method not found: 'System.String System.Drawing.Font.get_OriginalFontName()'
Note that this tool is written in C# and uses the .Net API.
Also note that I found another branch online that appears to pick up where the original version left off, but it did not fix these bugs, thus remaining incompatable with older versions of .Net.
