When AI meets Brazilian creativities
01.05.2024. Dall-E: "generate a flat art style comics, of brazilian indigenous people in an ai conference"
ChatGPT generated indigenous people from north america
29.10.2024. The images below may look nonsensical - why is Batman enveloped in dust and why is he tending to a sprout ? , but they are the series of evidences of what happens when AI is deployed without much attention to particular language contexts and insufficient guardrails. Meta recently deployed it's chatbot integrated with Whatsapp in Brazil, showing again that the country is the testbed for its technologies. Brazilians are discovering the limits of the technology in comical and often tragic ways.
In one of the prompts, the user asked the chatbot to generate a picture of Batman fighting Capoeira, the traditional afro-Brazilian fighting style. First, it seen it was relatively easy to depict Batman despite copyright laws - in other platforms like Dall-E the system does not allow it. Here, the AI focused only on the last bit of the word - Poeira, which means dust in Portuguese.
In the second image, Batman is shown planting a banana tree, which is the literal meaning of "plantando bananeira". However, in Brazil we use the term to depict someone who is upside down and supporting themselves with the hands.
Probably, Meta will need anotators from Brazil.
The author of the images couldn't be found. On the left, we see Dall-E rendition of the same Prompt in Portuguese. I could not prompt Batman but when I mentioned a "superhero inspired by bats", it clearly took references from Batman.
