This guide covers what Garmin Express is, what your computer needs to run it, how to install it, how to add and register a device, how map and software updates work, how to manage storage when a map no longer fits, and what to do at each of the points where the process fails.
Garmin Express is a free desktop application for Windows and Mac. It updates the maps and software on a Garmin device connected to your computer, registers that device to your Garmin account, and moves supporting content such as voices, vehicle icons and golf course data onto it. On a navigator without built-in WiFi, it is the only supported route for a map update.
The application itself contains no maps and no firmware. When you connect a device, Garmin Express reads the identity file the device presents, asks Garmin's servers what that particular unit is entitled to, downloads the matching packages, and writes them across the cable. Those four steps are worth remembering, because nearly every failure people attribute to the application is really a failure at one of the handoffs. The device does not mount, or the server cannot be reached, or the download breaks, or the write to the device is interrupted.
Garmin Express replaced two earlier tools. WebUpdater handled firmware and Garmin Map Updater handled maps, and both were retired once Garmin Express took over both jobs. A small number of early nüvi and StreetPilot models still refer you to those tools, and those models cannot be updated through Garmin Express at all. If your device shows a message saying it is not supported, that is what it means, and no reinstall changes it.
Two other Garmin applications come up constantly and do different work. Garmin Connect lives on your phone and in a browser, and its subject is what your wearable recorded: workouts, sleep, heart rate. No map has ever reached a navigator through it. BaseCamp is a desktop planning tool for routes and waypoints on maps you already own. Neither replaces Garmin Express, and Garmin Express does not replace either of them.
The application is free for both Windows and Mac. Any website charging for the download, or for activating it, is not Garmin.
Map updates are a separate question, and the answer depends on the device rather than the account you sign in with. Models sold with lifetime maps receive City Navigator updates for the supported life of the unit. You can identify them from the suffix in the model name. LM means lifetime maps. LMT adds lifetime traffic delivered through a receiver built into the power cable. LMT-S delivers traffic through a paired phone instead. Devices with no suffix either shipped without a map entitlement or need a nüMaps Lifetime subscription bought separately through Garmin.
The entitlement is tied to the unit, not to a person, which has one useful consequence. A second-hand device keeps whatever entitlement it was sold with, so a used navigator marked LM still receives map updates once you register it to your own account. It also has an unhelpful consequence: a device without the suffix cannot be upgraded to lifetime maps by any means, regardless of what a third-party site selling activation might claim.
Supported life is doing real work in that phrase. Garmin eventually stops issuing map updates for older models. When Garmin Express reports that no updates are available for a device that is ten years old, that is usually the reason rather than a fault.
Garmin Express needs Windows 10 or newer, or macOS 13 or newer. Beyond the operating system, both need a gigabyte of memory, as much as twenty gigabytes of spare drive space when a map is involved, a USB socket belonging to the computer rather than an accessory, and a connection steady enough to carry several gigabytes without dropping.
Windows 10 or newer, with .NET Framework 4.7.2. Both Windows 10 and Windows 11 include it, so it is rarely something you install separately. A display of 1024 x 768 or higher.
On Windows, the installer also adds a background service called Garmin Core Service. That service does the actual communication with the device and with Garmin's servers; the window you see is a front end for it. If the service cannot start, Garmin Express either opens to an empty window or does not open at all, which is covered further down.
If Windows reports that .NET Framework 4.7.2 is present but the installer disagrees, the framework is damaged rather than missing. Repairing it through Programs and Features, or with Microsoft's .NET Framework Repair Tool, resolves that faster than reinstalling Garmin Express repeatedly.
macOS 13 or newer. Garmin Express runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon machines. A display of 1440 x 900 or higher.
On first launch it asks for permission to access files on removable volumes. Grant it. A navigator mounts as a removable volume, so a device that has been denied that permission cannot see anything you connect, and it gives no explanation for why the search never finds anything.
1 GB of RAM, which is a formality on any current machine, and up to 20 GB of free disk space.
The disk figure is the one that catches people out. Garmin Express does not stream a map straight onto the device. It downloads the package, verifies it, unpacks it on the computer, and only then writes it across the cable, so more than one copy of a large map exists on your drive at the same time. A machine with 8 GB free will fail partway through, and the error it reports will not mention disk space.
Use a port on the computer itself. Hubs, docking stations and monitor passthrough ports add a second controller and share a power budget between everything plugged into them, and both are common causes of a device that disappears forty minutes into a map write.
The cable matters as much as the port. Four wires run through a USB lead, two carrying power and two carrying data. Leads bundled with chargers and battery packs routinely connect only the first pair. A device on a charge-only cable charges normally and never appears on the computer at all. Use the cable Garmin supplied, or one you know carries data.
Some older navigators also negotiate poorly with certain USB 3.0 controllers. When a device connects and drops on one socket, simply try a different one. Sockets on the back of a tower, or on the opposite edge of a laptop, often sit on a different controller.
High-speed internet is required. Dial-up, mobile and satellite connections are not supported for map downloads, and in practice any connection that resets periodically will break a transfer that runs for an hour. A wired connection is more reliable than WiFi for a map update, and it costs nothing to plug in for the evening.
Windows 8 and older are limited to Garmin Express version 7. Macs running OS X 10.16 or older are limited to version 7.18.x. Both legacy builds still install and still work with the devices they were current for, but Garmin no longer develops either of them. Treat a legacy build as a way to finish one job on an old machine, not as an arrangement you can rely on.
There is no version for Linux, ChromeOS, iPhone, iPad or Android, and there never has been. People do get the Windows build running under Wine or in a virtual machine, but it is not something to depend on. Handing a mass storage device through to a guest system behaves inconsistently, and losing the connection midway through writing a map leaves you worse off than if you had never started. If you have no Windows or Mac computer, either borrow one for the update, or use a navigator with built-in WiFi that updates itself on the device.
Download the installer from garmin.com/express and nowhere else. The address is Garmin's own shortcut and redirects to the official download page for both platforms.
Two kinds of site cause trouble in the search results for this. Download portals wrap Garmin's installer in a downloader of their own and add whatever they are paid to bundle that week; the Garmin installer inside may be genuine, but the wrapper is not. Lookalike sites use the address as though it were their brand name, put a phone number above the fold, and charge for a free application or for help installing it. Garmin does not charge for Garmin Express, does not run a support line through third-party websites, and never needs remote control of your computer to install a map.
Uninstall any existing copy of Garmin Express from Settings, then Apps, and restart the computer. A new version installed over a broken one inherits the breakage.
Run Windows Update and install anything pending, including .NET updates. Restart again if prompted.
Download the installer and wait until the browser reports the download complete. A partial file produces a confusing failure halfway through the install.
Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
Pause third-party antivirus until the install and the first launch have finished. Windows Security on its own rarely interferes.
Follow the on-screen instructions, then open the application once before connecting any device.
Check the file before you run it. Its Properties dialog has a signature tab, and the name on that signature should read Garmin International. If there is no signature, or the name belongs to some download service, you have the wrong file.
An Installation Failed message on a machine that clearly meets the requirements responds to compatibility mode. Open the installer's Properties, switch to Compatibility, select the previous Windows release, and tick the administrator option there as well. It is crude, and it unsticks the installer often enough to be worth trying before anything else.
Download the installer from garmin.com/express and open it.
Drag Garmin Express into the Applications folder.
Launch it. If macOS blocks the application, open System Settings, then Privacy and Security, find the message about Garmin Express, and choose Open Anyway.
When the application asks for access to files on a removable volume, click OK.
Connect your device only after the application is open.
Step four is the single most common Mac problem. The prompt appears once, and clicking Don't Allow is remembered indefinitely without further comment. The result is an application that searches for devices forever while telling you nothing. Undoing it means closing the application, then working through System Settings to Privacy and Security and into Files and Folders, where Garmin Express appears with a Removable Volumes switch to turn on. Start it up again once you have.
Android File Transfer appears in many Mac guides because newer watches and cycling computers need it. Installing it makes no difference to a navigator, and on some systems it claims the device before Garmin Express can reach it. If you only own navigators, you do not need it.
Uninstalling matters mainly because of what happens on the next install. Removing the application through the normal route leaves folders behind, and a fresh version installed on top of them inherits their state.
Uninstall Garmin Express from Settings, then Apps on Windows, or drag it to the Trash on a Mac. Restart the computer afterwards, because locked files are released on restart and not before.
Delete the leftovers. On Windows, paste %ProgramData%\Garmin and then %LocalAppData%\Garmin into the address bar in File Explorer and delete each folder. On a Mac, delete ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin.
Restart once more before reinstalling.
Nothing you would miss lives in those folders. None of it touches your account, the registration, the map rights held against that serial number, or anything stored on the device. What you lose locally is the cache and the device profile, and the application rebuilds both the first time you add a device again.
Power the device on and let it finish starting.
Connect it to the computer using the cable Garmin supplied, plugged into a port on the computer itself.
Wait until the device shows a transfer screen, or a drive letter appears in Windows, or a removable volume appears in Finder.
Open Garmin Express. On first run, click Get Started, then Add a Device.
When the device name and serial number appear, click Add Device.
Sign in with your Garmin account, or create one, and follow the prompts to finish registering.
The order matters more than it looks. Starting the search before the computer has finished recognising the device is the usual reason it spins indefinitely. When that happens the fault sits before the application in the chain: the lead, the socket, a permission that was refused, or a unit that never switched into transfer mode. Pressing Add a Device a second time changes none of those.
Use the same Garmin account every time. It is the same account Garmin Connect uses, and there is no separate Express account. Registering one device under one email address and another under a different one is a reliable way to end up with entitlements that appear and disappear depending on which machine you are working from.
Registering a second-hand device is straightforward and worth doing. Whatever map rights the unit carries belong to the hardware and are unaffected by which account signs in. What registering does is make those updates visible and downloadable to you, and put the device on file should you ever need Garmin's help with it.
Click the tile for the device, go to Tools & Content, then Utilities, and choose Remove from Express. Only the application forgets it. Nothing on the device is touched, and registration and map entitlements are unaffected.
This is worth doing early rather than late. The application takes a snapshot of the device when you first add it and keeps referring to that snapshot. Change the firmware, shift a map onto a card, or end a session badly, and the snapshot no longer describes the device in front of you. Deleting the entry and adding it back makes the application look again. It is a minute and a half of work, and it clears a good number of cases where updates refuse to appear or the tile is present but nothing happens.
Some older wearables, including several early Forerunner models, the Garmin Swim and the vívofit series, pair wirelessly through a USB ANT+ stick rather than a cable, with the device put into pairing mode first. Navigators never do this, so there is no pairing mode to look for on a Drive or a DriveSmart.
Marine chartplotters do not connect to a computer at all. Their updates travel on a memory card, which is covered further down.
Connect the device and open Garmin Express.
Let the application update itself first if it offers to.
Click View Details rather than Install All, and install the software update on its own.
Disconnect when told, and let the device finish restarting before you reconnect it.
Reconnect, then install the map update.
Leave it alone until the device restarts and reaches its map screen.
The update screen makes them look identical: a name, a size and an Install button. They are not.
A software update replaces the firmware the device runs on. It arrives as a small file, is staged in the device's Garmin folder, and is applied by the device itself when it restarts after you disconnect. Garmin Express plays no part after the handoff.
A map update replaces the City Navigator map data, which is the detailed street map with addresses, turn restrictions, points of interest and junction view images. It runs to several gigabytes, occupies an hour at minimum, and accounts for nearly every failed update anyone reports.
Install the software update first. Map packages assume current firmware, and a map written to a device running older software is the usual cause of a map that installs but will not open.
Install All runs everything in one long session. When a map fails partway through that session, you are left guessing what applied and what did not. View Details lists each update separately with its own Install button, which lets you finish the small firmware update, let the device restart, and then start the map deliberately, having decided first where it should go.
Install All is fine on a device with plenty of free space, or on a navigator that already has a memory card fitted. On an older unit with almost no space left, it is the sequence that produces a storage prompt in the middle of a long run, an abandoned session and a partly written map.
A map update moves through five stages, and only the first reports honest progress.
The download depends on your connection, and a full map is the better part of an hour on its own at typical speeds. The verification stage checks the package before anything touches the device, and it is silent. The unpack stage writes the map out on your computer, is disk-heavy, and is also silent, which is why the free space requirement is 20 GB rather than the size of the map. The write stage transfers the data to the device and is limited by the speed of an older unit's USB interface. Finally the device restarts and indexes the new map, which happens on the device with no cable attached.
A progress bar that has not moved for twenty minutes is usually one of the silent stages doing its job. Unplugging at that point is what turns a slow update into a broken one.
That instruction means the transfer is complete and the remaining work happens on the device with nothing attached to it. Once the cable is out, the device puts up an updating message, holds it for a minute or two, cycles through one or two reboots, and eventually settles on its normal map view. That final view is your signal to plug in again.
Two mistakes cause most of the damage here. The first is unplugging early because the progress bar appeared stuck. The second is reconnecting while the device is still updating, which interrupts the firmware write. Neither is fixable by clicking anything in Garmin Express.
If Garmin Express cannot see the device after you reconnect, do not restart the update. Remove the device from the application and add it again, which forces it to read the new firmware version, and the remaining updates reappear.
Select your device, open Tools & Content, and go into Manage Maps. Everything the unit is licensed for is listed there, and each entry lets you choose between the built-in storage and a card. On many models it also lets you select individual map regions rather than the whole map.
Manage Maps is the setting that matters most on any navigator more than a few years old. Put a microSD into the slot on the unit itself rather than into a reader, and the card shows up as somewhere the map can go. The application writes the map through the device, so it lands correctly matched to that unit. A card written any other way does not work.
Region selection achieves the same result by subtraction. Where it is offered, deselecting the regions you never drive in shrinks the package to something that fits comfortably.
One thing Manage Maps will not do is remove anything. Garmin Express installs maps and never deletes them, which means a map moved from internal storage to a card leaves the old copy behind, still occupying the space you were trying to free. Removing it is a manual job, described in the next section.
Internal storage on a navigator sold several years ago has not grown, while the maps it is entitled to have. That mismatch is behind most storage complaints about these devices, and it is why the memory card prompt exists.
When a map update is larger than the free internal storage, Garmin Express offers to use a memory card. There is no judgement involved in that prompt. The application has compared the size of the download against what the device has spare, and the numbers do not work. Accept it. Declining and continuing is what produces a failure partway through the install.
A card of up to 32 GB formatted as FAT32 works in every navigator that has a slot. Newer models accept larger cards, so check the manual for yours before buying one. The card must be in the device, not in a reader attached to the computer.
If you would rather keep the map in internal storage, connect the device, open it as a drive in File Explorer or Finder, and open the Garmin folder. Several things in there can go.
The Voice folder holds text-to-speech voices. A device ships with a dozen and you use one. The Text folder holds interface languages, and the same applies. The Help folder holds on-device help pages. Together these usually recover a few hundred megabytes.
The JCV folder holds junction view images, the drawings of motorway interchanges that appear before a complex exit. It is the largest optional item on the device after the map itself. Deleting it costs you those previews and nothing else; the device still routes normally and describes the exit rather than drawing it.
The GPX folder has an Archive subfolder full of dated trip logs, one for every time the device filled its current log. Nothing reads those again unless you go looking. They can be deleted from the drive, or cleared from the device's own settings under travel history.
Do not touch the .System folder. It holds firmware components and the base map, which is the low-detail world layer the device falls back to when the detail map is missing. Advice to clear space in there is the origin of a category of devices that no longer start.
Do not delete or edit GarminDevice.xml. That file is the device's identity, and Garmin Express reads it to know what the device is. Corrupt it and nothing detects the unit.
Do not remove a firmware file that is staged and waiting for a restart. The device deletes it itself once it has flashed.
Do not delete Current.gpx, in the GPX folder next to Archive. It holds your favourites, saved addresses and routes, and it sits exactly where a careless select-all will catch it. Copy it to the computer before you delete anything else in that folder.
Once a new map is installed and working, the old one can go, but the order matters.
Install the new map through Garmin Express.
Disconnect and confirm the device starts, shows the map, and routes to an address.
Plug the device back in and browse to where the maps live, which is a Map folder on recent hardware and the Garmin folder on anything older.
Identify the old map by its date. The new file carries the recent date.
Delete the old map file and the small unlock file with the same name. Nothing else.
If two map files are present and you cannot tell which is in use, stop. The device's own settings list the installed map under Map & Vehicle, then myMaps. Deleting the wrong one leaves the device with only its base map, showing motorways and coastlines and nothing else.
Problems here sort into five buckets: the install fails, the application never opens, the device stays invisible, something breaks mid-transfer, or the device is simply too old to be handled. Work out which bucket you are in from the message on screen, because that determines everything that follows. Jumping straight to a reinstall is how an afternoon disappears into a problem whose cause was a cable.
Error 1603 is a Windows Installer error rather than a Garmin one. It means something on the machine stopped the installer, and the usual causes are locked files left by a previous version, missing administrator rights, or a damaged .NET Framework.
Uninstall Garmin Express from Settings, then Apps. If the uninstaller itself fails, that is your first clue.
Restart the computer immediately rather than later.
Delete the leftover folders: %ProgramData%\Garmin and %LocalAppData%\Garmin.
Run Windows Update and install everything pending, including .NET updates.
Download a fresh installer rather than reusing the one that failed.
Right-click it, choose Run as administrator, with third-party antivirus paused.
If it fails again, the Windows Installer log names the reason. It is written to %TEMP% as a file beginning MSI; open the newest one and search for the phrase return value 3. Whatever is logged immediately before that phrase identifies the step that broke, and it is normally either a locked file the installer wanted to overwrite or a framework check that came back negative.
If Garmin Express installs but never opens, or the download page insists it is already installed while the launch button does nothing, the Garmin Core Service is not starting. Security software blocking a service is the usual cause, followed by a damaged .NET Framework and a half-completed update.
Run services.msc and look for the Garmin Core entry. A service that sits stopped and refuses to start will have logged the reason; Event Viewer, under Windows Logs and then Application, records it with a matching timestamp. Then uninstall, restart and reinstall the current version.
On a Mac, a launch failure is more often an older build of Garmin Express meeting a newer macOS. Download the current version, replace the application, and approve it under Privacy and Security if Gatekeeper objects.
Check what the computer shows before touching the application, because that alone tells you where the problem is.
A working navigator appears in Windows as a Removable Disk with a drive letter, and in Finder as a removable volume. If nothing appears at all while the device charges, the cause is the cable or the port. Use the cable Garmin supplied, or another you know carries data, and plug into the computer rather than a hub.
If the device appears and disappears, power management or a hub is dropping it. Move it to a port on the computer, and on Windows consider the power settings described below.
If the drive appears but Garmin Express keeps searching, the device profile is stale, a permission is missing, or the identity file is damaged. Remove the device from the application and add it again, and on a Mac confirm that Removable Volumes is enabled for Garmin Express under Privacy and Security, then Files and Folders.
If Device Manager shows an error or unknown device under Disk drives, a filter driver from backup or security software is intercepting mass storage. Uninstall that entry, reconnect the device, and disable the device protection feature in the software concerned.
One piece of advice circulates widely and does not apply to navigators: reinstalling an MTP driver. Navigators connect as USB mass storage, so there is no MTP driver anywhere in the path. Only newer watches and cycling computers connect over MTP, and only those appear under Portable Devices in Device Manager, with no drive letter. Time spent looking for a navigator in Portable Devices is time spent in the wrong part of Device Manager.
An error during a large transfer is almost always the network path on your side rather than Garmin's servers. VPN clients, proxies, and security suites that inspect HTTPS traffic all break a connection that has to stay open for an hour, and some routers reset long-running connections on their own.
Turn the VPN off for the session. Switch off the certificate-inspection feature in your security software, or add an exception so Garmin's traffic passes through untouched. Allow both Garmin Express and the Garmin Core Service through the firewall, because permitting only the application leaves the service unable to reach anything. Check that the computer clock is set correctly, since a wrong date invalidates the certificates every connection depends on. Use a wired connection if one is available, and confirm you still have the free disk space the update needs.
If the update fails at the same point every time, a partly downloaded package is being reused on every attempt, and it will keep failing until the cached copy is gone. Shut the application down properly first. On Windows it hides in the notification area rather than quitting, so check there. Then empty the folder at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Garmin\Express, or ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express on a Mac. Empty it; do not remove the folder itself. Reopen the application, add the device, and start the update from the beginning.
A port with no visible traffic looks dormant to Windows, and a navigator quietly receiving a map for an hour fits that description. Windows cuts power, the transfer dies, and the failure appears to come from nowhere.
Open Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, and for each USB Root Hub open Properties, then Power Management, and clear the option allowing the computer to turn the device off to save power. There is usually more than one.
Open Power Options, then the advanced settings for your plan, and set USB selective suspend to Disabled.
In the same plan, set sleep and turning off the hard disk to Never for the duration of the update.
A laptop running on battery is the worst case, because it may suspend the port, sleep the machine, or both, and Garmin Express reports the result as a failed update with no mention of power. Plug the laptop in before you start.
A message about being unable to open or unlock maps means the map file on the device has no valid key for that particular unit. It follows a map copied from another device, a memory card taken from a different unit, a damaged identity file, or a map written while the device was running old firmware.
Check the physical explanations first. If the card came out of a different unit, the map on it belongs to that unit. Take the card out and the warning disappears. If that is not it, remove the device from Garmin Express, add it again, open Manage Maps and install the map once more to the same location, which writes a fresh key alongside it.
This appears on early nüvi and StreetPilot models whose firmware predates the protocol Garmin Express uses. It is accurate and final. The device continues to navigate on the map it has, and it will not receive a current map through any supported route. Sites offering to sell you a map update for a device in this category are selling a file that will not work.
The procedure is the same for every Garmin device that connects by cable. What changes between families is the size of the package and what is worth checking afterwards.
nüvi. Small internal storage, so a memory card is close to mandatory for a full map. The oldest generations predate Garmin Express entirely.
Garmin Drive and DriveSmart. Expect the memory card prompt on older units. DriveSmart units at 51 and above carry a wireless radio, so they pull maps and firmware down on their own without a computer involved at all. You will find that under Settings and then Updates on the unit, and it should stay plugged into power for the duration. Garmin Express over USB remains the route when a WiFi update is interrupted and leaves the map incomplete.
dēzl. The largest packages Garmin ships, because truck restriction data travels with the map. Re-check the vehicle profile after every map update, since height, weight and length restrictions come from the map data and a new map can change a route.
RV and Camper. Campground and RV restriction data add to the package size, and the same advice about re-checking the vehicle profile applies.
zūmo. Motorcycle navigators use the same City Navigator maps and the same procedure as car units.
Catalyst. Software updates only. It carries no maps, so there is nothing to update beyond the device software itself.
Outdoor handhelds. Models such as GPSMAP and Montana connect by cable and list the topographic and street maps they are licensed for in Manage Maps, alongside the usual software updates.
Approach golf devices. Older watches and the G-series handhelds take firmware and course updates from Garmin Express over the charging cable. Newer Approach models sync courses through the Garmin Golf app on a phone and use Garmin Express as a wired fallback or for large regional course loads.
Marine chartplotters. GPSMAP and ECHOMAP units do not connect to a computer. Start the plotter with a blank card in its slot and let it boot fully, which is when it stamps its own identifier onto the card. Take the card out, put it into a reader attached to your computer, and let Garmin Express discover it. The application recognises the card as the plotter and stages the update onto it; the plotter then applies that update the next time it powers up. Use a card dedicated to updates and never the chart card, because reformatting a chart card destroys the chart licence along with the data. On WiFi-capable models, the ActiveCaptain app handles the same job without the card.
Wearables. Garmin Connect handles the daily sync and, on most models, firmware as well. Garmin Express is the wired fallback, and on the models that support them it is also the route for music and Connect IQ content.
Garmin ships several applications whose names all begin the same way, and choosing the wrong one accounts for a good share of the failed updates that reach support forums.
Garmin Express changes what is on the device: firmware, maps, registration, backups, and supporting content. Desktop only, Windows and Mac.
Garmin Connect handles what the device recorded: activities, sleep, training and health data. Phone and web. It never installs a map on a navigator.

That depends on the device rather than the account. Models marked LM, LMT or LMT-S were sold with lifetime maps and receive updates for the supported life of the unit. Devices without a suffix need a purchased update or a nüMaps Lifetime subscription. The entitlement stays with the device, so a second-hand unit keeps whatever it came with.
No. It is published for Windows and macOS only. Mobile users should use the Garmin Connect app, which handles activity data but cannot install a map on a navigator.
Not as a computer application; it talks to a device only over USB. WiFi is a separate path that runs on the device itself. DriveSmart models from the 51 series onward and current dēzl and RV models download map and software updates without a computer, under Settings, then Updates.
Garmin Express manages the device: registration, firmware and maps. Garmin Connect handles the data the device recorded. A navigator never uses Garmin Connect. A watch owner will end up in both, though almost all routine syncing happens on the Connect side.
Usually the cable. A cable supplied with a charger often carries power only, so the device charges but never appears on the computer. Use the Garmin cable, plug into a port on the computer rather than a hub, and confirm the device shows as a Removable Disk before opening the application.
A full map is several gigabytes and takes an hour or more, longer on a slow connection. Truck and RV maps are larger again. Plan for an evening, keep the device on power, and do not close the laptop lid partway through.
Because gigabytes have to pass through five separate phases, and just one of them puts a number on screen. Checking and extracting happen quietly on your computer, and pushing the data onto the device runs at whatever speed that unit's USB hardware manages. A hub, a WiFi connection or a laptop on battery slows every stage.
Because the map update is larger than the free space on the device. Accept the prompt and fit a card in the device's own slot. Garmin Express writes the map through the device so it is correctly matched to that unit; a card written in a reader does not work.

Yes, within limits. Unused voices, unused interface languages, on-device help files, junction view images and archived trip logs can all go. Do not touch the .System folder, the device identity file, or your favourites file. Garmin Express itself cannot delete maps.
It checks for its own updates on launch and prompts you before it will touch a device. Accept it. Should that prompt never show up, fetch a current installer from garmin.com/express and run it straight over what is already there. The upgrade happens in place, and the devices you added stay added.
Select the device tile, open Tools & Content, click Utilities, then Remove from Express. It leaves the device untouched and keeps registration and entitlements intact.
Provided it came from Garmin, yes. What you get is a signed executable that puts the application and one background service on your machine and nothing more. The danger was never Garmin's file. It is the repackaged version from a download portal, or the paid assistance offered by a site pretending to be Garmin.
