Eukaryotes

Last unit we studied a Prokaryotic cell (Bacteria) and now we are ready to learn the structures in a Eukaryotic cell. While learning about the organelles inside a cell we will also learn about the levels of organization (cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organism). Learning about plant cells, tissues and organs will lead us into the next unit of plants & ecology.

  • Vacuole Lab: a closer look at water movement into and out of the vacuole of a plant cell. Try this simulation.
  • Mitochondrial Disease
  • Virtual Reality Cells - using the VR sets to enter a cell
  • Cell specialization "poster": The "poster" project will be done with Google Drawings (like google slides or docs but better for this type of activity). Students will choose one specialized cell in the human body (there are over 200 to choose from). Special permissions will be granted for cancer cells or bacterial cells necessary for human life but lets have a conversation before you choose one of those cells.

Simulation

  • Taking a closer look at the cell membrane (demo only, it doesn't work on chromebooks).
  • Neuron with flash (macbook in class) or Neuron for Chromebooks
  • Glencoe Virtual Lab: Osmosis. This lab goes with the Vacuole lab - a quick demonstration on what we should see while putting plant cells in pure water and salt water.
  • Review the organelles of an animal and plant cell.

NGSS
