I believe the digital age has allowed people to gain perspective of different art, cultures, and lifestyles without being present. For example, we all know about North Korea as they prohibit visitors. We learn about different artists and their artwork without actually having to be there to understand its significance. The digital revolution has erased man-made boarders that have prevented us from learning and globalizing our craft.
I am intrigued by Gabriel Orozco’s modification of conventional games series including the Ping-pong, Billiards, and Chess game. My favorite piece of his within that series is the Oval Billard table. I liked how he transformed the game of pool into his own conceptual universe. As he described it, “You have a little world in this board or in this table, designed to perfection, so you can play in a landscape.” I thought it was brilliant how he placed a pendulum that swings through the oval billard as the other pool balls revolve around it.
I enjoy his use of conceptualism in his artwork and was inspired by his Oval Billard to create this piece. This piece consists of a similar theme of metaphysical conceptualism. Similar to Orozco, these pieces are about life and how one can construct and rearrange their own reality until it’s “perfect.” More specifically, this piece is about Balance. People gravitate towards activities or lifestyles that entail balance. The pool balls in Orozco’s piece eventually revolve around the center of the table when the pendulum is at rest.
