“My Grandchildren, " showcases the meaning of what we know as an archive, and its overall purpose. Archives are uses to log past experiences, memories, and overall important events. I wanted to play on how me view memories in perspective of someone who has experienced memory loss.
Taken from a personal experience, I had to goal of mimicking memory loss through the formal aspect of a viewmaster disc, in order to showcase my grandmothers experience of having alzhemiers. Viewmasteres are used to display a selected set of images, and are able to be clicked through, eventually circling back to the start of the reel. This same idea can be mimicked in perspect of someone who has experienced memory loss. Many times, individuals who have experienced similar process as my grandmother, can only remember people up to a certain point. Or often relive or retell memories and only recall people in a certain form or time period.
I made several formal choices, one being messing up and distorting the photos as the photos progress. I also decided to scle the work up so the piece becomes easier for a bigger audience to view. Lastly I chose to install lights behind the work, so it can be viewed in the dark to look at the transparent photos.
This work was showcased in University of Southern California Roski's 2024 Annual Student Exhibition.
