If you want deep bass isolation and a secure fit for active fishing in choppy water, choose Gabba Goods Earbuds; if you need situational awareness and comfort for long days wearing glasses on the boat, choose eDepot Open Ear Clip-on. Both options serve distinct needs when you are out on the water, but they cater to very different listening philosophies. One seals your world off, while the other keeps it open.
• Gabba Goods Earbuds: Delivers immersive sound with 6mm dynamic drivers and passive noise cancellation, but offers shorter battery life per charge at just 4 hours. Best for anglers who prioritize audio immersion and a compact form factor.
• eDepot Open Ear Clip-on: Features an ergonomic clip design that sits outside the ear canal, ensuring you hear boats and wildlife while enjoying 40 hours of total playtime. Ideal for those who need to stay alert to their surroundings while fishing.
• Gabba Goods is the choice for a traditional, sealed listening experience that blocks out wind and wave noise.
• eDepot is the superior pick for safety-conscious users who wear glasses or need to hear environmental cues without removing their headphones.
The Gabba Goods Wireless Earbuds are built for the person who wants to tune out the chaos of the marina or the wind whipping off the lake. These Truebuds Bliss in-ear headphones utilize a compact, durable design that fits snugly inside the ear canal. This physical seal provides passive noise cancellation, which is crucial when you are trying to focus on a podcast or listen to music without the constant drone of an outboard motor interfering. The design is specifically engineered for on-the-go use, making them lightweight enough to toss in a tackle box pocket without adding bulk.
From an audio perspective, these earbuds leverage 6mm dynamic drivers with a frequency response range of 20Hz to 20KHz. This specification suggests a balanced sound profile capable of delivering rich bass and clear highs, essential for enjoying high-quality tracks during long hours on the water. The impedance is rated at 16 ohms (noted as 20 ohm in some product details), which ensures efficient power usage and drives the dynamic driver effectively. If you are looking for the best on ear headphones for fishing that actually deliver a full-range soundstage, the sealed nature of this in-ear design is a significant advantage over open designs.
Connectivity is handled via Bluetooth 5.0 technology, providing a wireless range of up to 10 meters. While not the latest generation, this version offers reliable stability for pairing with smartphones or portable speakers. The user interface relies on intuitive touch controls, allowing you to adjust volume, skip tracks, or activate Siri and Google Assistant without fumbling for buttons. A practical feature for any angler is the smart LED power display on the charging case, which keeps you informed of the remaining battery status at a glance.

However, the trade-off lies in the endurance. Each earbud provides up to 4 hours of playtime on a single charge. While the 400mAh USB-C charging case extends the total listening time significantly, the short individual battery cycle means you will need to recharge more frequently than with clip-on alternatives. Additionally, because they are in-ear models, they do not allow you to hear ambient sounds like approaching boats or splashing fish unless you remove them entirely.
Who should skip this? Anglers who rely heavily on hearing their environment for safety or who find in-ear pressure uncomfortable after a few hours should look elsewhere. Also, if you need a device that can last an entire day of fishing on a single charge without returning to the case, the 4-hour limit might be a constraint.
The eDepot Open Ear Clip-on earbuds represent a different philosophy entirely, one centered on safety and all-day comfort. Weighing just 5.2g, these DY21 clip earbuds are designed to contour snugly to the outer ear without blocking the ear canal. This "open ear" design is a game-changer for fishing enthusiasts who wear prescription glasses. Many in-ear models create friction with temple arms, causing headaches during long trips. The eDepot design sits comfortably alongside glasses frames, allowing you to wear both seamlessly while staying attuned to surrounding sounds.
The standout feature here is the massive battery capacity. With a single charge delivering up to 8 hours of playback and a matching case that stretches total listening time to 40 hours, these earbuds can easily handle a full day of fishing from dawn until dusk. This longevity is supported by Bluetooth 6.0 technology, which offers a stable connection and a wider wireless range of up to 15 meters compared to the Gabba Goods model. The inclusion of multipoint connection allows you to link two gadgets simultaneously, meaning you can switch effortlessly between your phone and a tablet without re-pairing, a useful feature if you are managing multiple devices on a dock or boat.
Audio quality is driven by larger 10mm dynamic drivers, which are physically bigger than the 6mm drivers found in the Gabba Goods model. This size difference often translates to better bass response and a more expansive soundstage, even with an open design. The eDepot earbuds offer three distinct audio modes: Spatial Mode for an immersive soundstage, Music Mode for balanced stereo, and low-latency Game Mode for synchronized audio. While the latter is great for gaming, the first two modes provide excellent clarity for music and calls. The IPX5 waterproof rating ensures resistance against sweat and splashes, making them suitable for various weather conditions on the water.
Control is managed through a dual system of responsive touch panels and a dedicated physical button. The touch controls handle standard playback operations, while the physical button allows you to toggle between the three audio modes instantly. This hybrid approach reduces accidental touches, a common issue with pure touch interfaces when your hands are wet or gloved. The build quality uses plastic enclosures for the case and soft silicone brackets for the earpieces, ensuring durability without sacrificing comfort.
Who should skip this? If you are an audiophile who demands absolute silence and zero leakage, the open design might leak sound into the environment and let too much external noise in. Furthermore, if you prefer the feeling of being completely isolated from the world while you listen, the open fit will feel less secure than a true in-ear seal.
• Best for Battery Life → eDepot Open Ear Clip-on: With 8 hours per charge and 40 hours total, it crushes the 4-hour single-charge limit of the Gabba Goods model.
• Best for Audio Immersion → Gabba Goods Earbuds: The in-ear design with passive noise cancellation and 6mm drivers creates a sealed environment for deeper bass and less distraction.
• Best for Glasses Wearers → eDepot Open Ear Clip-on: The 5.2g weight and open-ear clip design prevents the friction issues common with in-ear buds when wearing eyewear.
• Best Connectivity Range → eDepot Open Ear Clip-on: Bluetooth 6.0 offers a 15-meter range, surpassing the 10-meter limit of the Bluetooth 5.0 Gabba Goods unit.
• Best for Total Durability → eDepot Open Ear Clip-on: The IPX5 rating combined with the robust 40-hour case makes it ideal for extended outdoor exposure.
• Best for Compact Storage → Gabba Goods Earbuds: The small USB-C case is extremely portable, though the eDepot case is also compact, the Gabba Goods unit is slightly smaller overall.
• Best for Situational Awareness → eDepot Open Ear Clip-on: You can hear boats, waves, and conversations while still enjoying your music, a critical safety feature on the water.
• Best for Fast Charging → Gabba Goods Earbuds: A 1-hour charge time is quick, though the eDepot case supports long-term listening without frequent top-ups.
After analyzing the specs and design philosophies of both units, I would personally choose the eDepot Open Ear Clip-on for fishing. The primary reason is safety and comfort; being able to hear your surroundings while wearing headphones is non-negotiable when you are near moving water or traffic. The 40-hour battery life also eliminates the anxiety of running out of power mid-trip, a common frustration with shorter-life earbuds. While the Gabba Goods model offers excellent sound isolation, the open-ear design of the eDepot provides a more versatile experience for an outdoor activity where awareness is key. For the best open ear earbuds for fishing, the eDepot wins on utility.
Both models offer water resistance, but the eDepot carries an IPX5 rating, explicitly protecting against sweat and splashes, making it a strong candidate for wet conditions. The Gabba Goods model focuses on durability for daily use but does not list a specific IP rating in the data sheet.
The Gabba Goods model uses 6mm drivers with a sealed in-ear fit, which naturally produces stronger bass due to passive noise cancellation. The eDepot uses larger 10mm drivers, but the open design may result in slightly less perceived bass depth compared to a sealed in-ear option.
Yes, the eDepot Open Ear Clip-on is specifically designed for glasses wearers with its 5.2g weight and clip-on shape that avoids ear canal blockage. In-ear models like the Gabba Goods can sometimes cause discomfort when paired with thick temple arms.
No, both products include a USB-C charging cable in the package. The Gabba Goods case charges in about 1 hour, while the eDepot case supports the 40-hour total playtime with a standard USB-C connection.
