Futsal is played in all the continents of the world by over 100 countries with 12 million players. Great soccer superstars such as Pele, Zico, Ronaldo, Messi, Kaka and Katia grew up playing the game and credit futsal with developing their skills.

Futsal comes from the Portuguese futebol de salo and from the [Spanish] ftbol sala or ftbol de saln (all translatable as "indoor football"). During its second world championships held in Madrid in 1985, the Spanish name ftbol sala was used. The World Futsal Association registered the name futsal in 1985, following a dispute with FIFA over the name ftbol. Since then, futsal has become the officially and internationally accepted name, and FIFA has also started using the term.

Shortly after, a tournament was organized. It attracted some interest in South American media, which regularly began to follow futsal. In particular, it was the Brazilian journalist Jos Antnio Inglz who passionately contributed to the rapid spread of the game, as well as being credited as the man who coined the name "futsal".[8]

The two most important governing bodies of futsal are the Asociacin Mundial de Ftsal (AMF) and Fdration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). AMF is the successor organization to the original governing body. FIFA later took an interest in futsal. However, talks between FIFA and AMF to reconcile governance were not successful. FIFA organizes its own separate competitions.

The International Futsal Alliance (IFA) is a partnership of countries formed to offer high quality futsal tournaments throughout the world. It sees itself as ancillary rather than competing with FIFA. Its membership spans countries from North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Several tournaments have been organized under the auspices of IFA, including a world cup for men held in 2019 and one for women held in 2017.[10]

There are currently two governing bodies: Asociacin Mundial de Ftsal (AMF) and Fdration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) which are responsible for maintaining and regulating the official rules of their respective versions of futsal.

FIFA publishes its futsal rules as the 'Laws of the Game', in which each of the 17 'laws' is a thematically related collection of individual regulations. The laws define all aspects of the game, including which may be changed to suit local competitions and leagues.[11]

Many of the laws are similar or identical to those found in association football, or reference association football in their absence (such as a section noting that there is no offside infraction in futsal). These rules are subjective and differ from tournament to tournament.

Unlike association football, there is no offside in futsal. Under the Futsal Laws of the Game, Law 11 references offside as it does in association football, but only says that there is no offside in futsal.[31]

Yellow and red cards are used in futsal. The yellow card is to caution players over their actions. If they get two, they are given a red card, which means they are sent off the field. A yellow card is shown if a player shows unsporting behavior, dissent, persistent infringement of the Laws of the Game, delaying the restart of play, failing to respect the distance of the player from the ball when play is being restarted, infringement of substitution procedure or entering, re-entering and leaving the field without the referee's permission.[34] A player is shown the red card and sent off if they engage in serious foul play, violent conduct, spitting at another person, or denying the opposing team a goal by handling the ball (except the goalkeeper inside their penalty area). Also punishable with a red card is denying an opponent moving towards the player's goal a goal scoring opportunity by committing an offense punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick and using offensive, insulting or abusive language or gestures.[34] A player who has been sent off must leave the vicinity of the field.[citation needed]

Raymore Parks & Recreation presents open play futsal. This instructor-lead drop in an play program is designed to expand soccer players' training during the winter. It's fast-paced play provides development of ball control and precision passing skills. Attend as many sessions as you like that fit your schedule. All sessions are offered on Friday evenings.

This complex is designated only for futsal, and indivduals must supply their own equipment. Tournaments, leagues, or events are prohibited without a permit issued by the Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation. Court lights remain on until 10:00pm.

As the fall soccer season gets underway we are excited to share information about the upcoming Academy Futsal season (formerly known as Futsal ID)! Over the past several years we have worked to integrate the Futsal ID and Academy Soccer season experiences. In transitioning the program name to Academy Futsal, we are taking another step to align these two programs (soccer and futsal) into a holistic annual experience for participants, coaches and families.

Academy soccer and futsal administrators and coaches will work together to create an optimum practice and game schedule for the winter season that integrates futsal play alongside the winter showcase events, especially at the high school age groups where schedules are most conflicted. We aim to create consistency throughout the year for all age groups and retain cohesion with teammates, curriculum, experiences and coaches.

How will players be evaluated?

Academy (futsal and soccer) staff will evaluate players at regularly scheduled Academy soccer training sessions during the first seven weeks of the soccer season, August-October 1st. Head coaches of each soccer team in an age group will work together in collaboration with the Futsal staff through a process designed to identify parallel soccer and futsal attributes such as:

Futsal teams in this program will be coached by ASA futsal coaches, practice one day per week and play league games in an appropriately competitive division. They will not participate in any tournaments. Some kids may be placed on FGP local experience teams, and others may opt for this experience level.

The Sporting Iowa Futsal League (SPIFL) is a competitive futsal league where players' impact on the game will be tracked. The league is designed to put players into challenging, competitive circumstances with different types of players other than current teammates. Each session will have a theme.

Not surprisingly, compared to large field soccer, futsal places much greater emphasis on ball control. Every movement during a game of futsal must be calculated as errant passes can and usually do result in turnovers and lost scoring opportunities. Futsal is a game of imagination and creativity, deception and lies, that uses teamwork and synergy to outscore the opponent. Players are required to manipulate and master the ball and invade and exploit space in a high-pressure, high-reward environment. Subsequently, futsal is an excellent breeding ground for football competencies that can be translated into the 11-a-side format of the game.

What became futsal was developed in 1930s Uruguay by a teacher named Juan Carlos Ceriani, originally to play on a basketball court. In writing the laws he took the five-a-side team sizes and 40-minute match duration from basketball, pitch and goal dimensions from handball, and goalkeeper rules from water polo.
