Fruits have been depicted on different works of art for millennia. Wallpapers and textiles are no exception, and the familiar shapes and colours of fruits and vegetables feature in many popular patterns. The most frequently used motifs include apples, cherries, pears, strawberries, lemons, oranges, plums, and pineapples.

Although a native fruit of the temperate regions of the Mediterranean, this juicy fruit with soft flesh and a sweet taste has spread throughout the world. It carries a deep symbolic meaning alluding to prosperity and good health. Its shape evokes the female form, and it has for this reason been used to represent femininity in arts. In terms of wall dcor, pears are frequently used to symbolise abundance and bountiful harvests in autumn-themed wallpapers.

A fruit with an iconic and unique shape, the pineapple is the very incarnation of the visual appeal of the tropical style. Its bright, yellow colour mirrors the sunshine of the hot countries from which it originates while its green crown seems to explode from the top of this delicious fruit. Its unique and complex shape is often used in decorative and complex wall dcor damask patterns.

Plums were one of the first fruits to be domesticated by humans, having been cultivated by our ancestors as far back as the Neolithic age. Due to the sophisticated purple colour that carries a subtle darker red tinge, plum-themed wallpapers can bring an almost royal sense of elegance to any space and are therefore ideal for statement rooms.

In common imagery, cherries carry a distinctly sensual and mysterious allure. Their dark, red flesh represents a symbology that is starkly different from the white petals of the flowers that precede it. Cherry-themed wallpaper models tend to either represent the fruit in a bright and traditional manner or (as the fruit is originally from Asia) depict the stunning branches of its tree in full bloom (for oriental interior design solutions).

With its bright red colour dotted with yellow seeds, the ornamental and symmetrical shape of its sepal, and its unmistakeable shape, the strawberry is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and frequently depicted fruits in interior decoration. Printed on wallpapers and fabrics in countless variations from classic motifs to kawaii patterns, it never fails to bring joy and a cheeky sense of fun.

While slightly less common than their fruit counterparts, vegetables have inspired countless wallpaper designs. From the humble onion to the elegant stems of the rhubarb or the unusual beauty of blooming artichoke plants, there is a plethora of motifs to pick.

Few vegetables look more alien than the green artichoke. A native Mediterranean plant, enjoyed by both European and Arab populations for millennia, the artichoke plant with its tightly packed leaves and pointy ends resembles an oriental suit of armour. When in bloom it produces a glorious explosion of blue-violet flowers that have inspired many wallpaper designs, the most famous of them being the iconic John Henry Dearle model for Morris & Co.

The pastel red colour of the rhubarb stalk provides an elegant contrast to the bright green of its leaves which has often been used interior decoration concepts. A staple of pies, puddings and dessert, rhubarb has transcended its oriental origins to become a popular ingredient in North American and European cuisines. As a wallpaper pattern it is often represented in a flat, stylised form with bright colours.

Although it might seem an odd choice at first glance, this perennial staple is an excellent choice when it comes to pick a motif that represents the very essence of food culture. This iconic bulb has been featured in countless paintings over many centuries and it is often associated with French cuisine, making an onion-themed wallpaper a fantastic way to add a certain French je ne sais quoi to a cosy dining room.

A fruit or vegetable-themed wallpaper is the perfect choice for any room of the house requiring a splash of colour, but it is naturally best suited to spaces where food is consumed, for instance in the kitchen, dining room, or even a restaurant.

Our minds subconsciously pick up visual cues from the environment that surrounds us, and a place designed for convivial gatherings and for enjoying meals with family and friends is well suited for an elegant wallpaper featuring a fruit or vegetable pattern in a classic style such as those created by William Morris, or in more stylised and modern design.

The fun and colourful nature of fruit wallpaper makes it a perfect choice for food establishments looking for that happy and elusive summery vibe that will put a smile on the face of customers. An ice cream parlour or a juice bar are ideally suited for wall dcor concepts featuring summer fruits in bright colours, and restaurants can benefit from a food-themed wallpaper in more muted and subtler hues.

Originally created using watercolour pencils and paints, this exotic botanical wallpaper design depicts Blue Jays and Wood Warblers amongst the branches surrounded by peaches, cherries, pears and plums. Welcoming in hallways and reception rooms.
