Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar

Doha, Qatar

Featuring acerbic wit and unflinching humor, BEING BROWN IS MY SUPERPOWER, looks at what it means to be brown, female, and alive in this supposed post racial era. Laugh along as Mohana shares the most awkward, most unbelievable moments of growing up. You'll have a front row seat as teachers, boyfriends, and parents, taught important lessons about her browness. Distilled from years of doing standup comedy (and biting her tongue during interactions with the clueless), audiences will be laughing all the way at how, despite it all, Mohana became a novelist, professor, wife and mother. Yet none of those brought her the avid listening she craved. There was nothing left but to head to the comedy stage where people might boo but at least they were paying attention. Crowds laugh with Mohana about being brown in a black/white world and also how far white people have come from making fun of her school lunches to asking how to make all the curries.

Performed by an out of work English PhD who couldn't get work as a professor. Mohana has lived in the Middle East for 15 years and that's where she really came to understand what racism is. She grew up in Florida which is where she also heard the backhanded compliment that people didn't think of her as black.
