One of Canada’s senior touring Fringe artists, John D. Huston has written, directed, performed and/or stage managed over 35 Fringe shows in dozens of festivals across Canada since 1991 often appearing in multiple productions.

A busy actor, he has performed in Canada, the U.K. & the States. A member of the Metis Nation, John’s lively career “culturally misappropriating the works and identities of dead white guys”, includes playing Tommy Douglas in Saskatchewan, William Lyon MacKenzie in Toronto, Shakespeare in England, & Charles Dickens across Canada. In 2017 he was privileged to portray Louis Riel for the 50th anniversary production of Canada’s longest running dramatic presentation, The Trial of Louis Riel.

John’s own solo scripts include adaptations of ghost stories, Creeping Murmur; Poring Dark, a Dickensian solo script, Murder He Wrote, the Victorian comic novel, Three Men in a Boat, &, with Kenneth Brown, Wooster Sauce, based on P.G. Wodehouse. John & Kenneth have also collaborated on, Kind Hearts & Coronets, 2 Sherlock Holmes Adventures, & The Sign of Four.

His performance in Mark Leiren-Young's, controversial play, Shylock secured John a performance slot in UNO, Canada’s oldest & most prestigious festival of solo work. SCREWTAPE, John’s own adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters, garnered him a Best Actor (Professional) nomination in 2015 by the Ottawa Capitol Critics’ Circle. His performance as Charles Dickens in Dickens’ own solo script of A Christmas Carol earned him a second nomination the following year in the same category, the only non-Ottawa actor to be nominated two years running.

When in Canada, John usually makes his home in Toronto.
