Friends of 243 is dedicated to the preservation and operation of Seahorse Ship 243. Ship 243 is currently used as an active training vessel for our local Sea Scout Crew 243.
We are a dedicated group of individuals that want nothing more then to preserve a former Naval ship. In addition to her rich military history, she is currently used as a real world training vessel for our Sea Scout Crew 243.
Our volunteers dedicate their personal time to help ensure ship 243 can continue to operate safely. These volunteers donate their personal time to mentor, train and educate our youth on maritime skills.
No Member of the Friends of 243 receives a salary. All funds/donations go directly to supporting the ship and enhance the Sea Scout experience for our youth.
While serving with the Navy, Ship 243 was selected to transport the 1980 Olympic torch from Langley to Yorktown, VA
The Current Sea Horse served with the Navy at Little Creek, VA with the SBU 24 (Special Boat Unit).
It was used as a training vessel for Navy Seals, Army Rangers and Marines. She was later used as a test platform for stealth technology with radar adsorbing tiles. This image shows her when we received her; remnants of the tiles could be seen all about her.
The Sea Horse of today. She is a 65' vessel that we use as our primary training vessel. She is powered by twin 8V92 Detroit Diesel engines.
She also now has some of the most modern Navigation/Electronics thanks to the support from our friends at Raymarine..
