Here's a list of Windows Vista-compatible sound cards, as compiled by the good folks at IeXwiki, with comments where appropriate. I've also included what they list as incompatible - but workable - and the just plain incompatible.

The soundcard has many problems with the poorly made BETA drivers! It is useless for mixing as the sound quality is a fraction of what it used to be when I used to use the original XP drivers. Latency problems are now visible in some cases and there is no S/PDIF pass-through available, so I can not use multi-channel surrround on my amplifier. The product is great but the drivers are appalling.

hello, I've picked up a brand new laptop with vista. I'm running ableton live 5. The mme/direct x soundcard has latency issues, so I downloaded asio4all drivers to cure the latency problems (as I've done before with xp).

when I switch over to the asio drivers in 'live' preferences i lose all sound but I can still see levels. Others are having similar problems, there must be a way for vista to recognize these levels...

My Vista has always been crashing because of the sound card. I have bought Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum. Bluescreen bs, never works. It's become a huge issue. :-( Quad core, 2 8800gtx, and no frigging sound, can anyone help on this?

This article describes how to update a sound card driver in Windows Vista and in Windows XP.

This article is intended for a beginning to intermediate computer user.

You may find it easier to follow the steps if you print this article first.

Under Sound, video, and game controllers, double-click the entry for your sound card, and then click the Driver tab.

Note If a Driver tab is not present, the entry that you clicked under Sound, video, and game controllers may not be the correct entry for your sound card. Try clicking any additional entries listed under Sound, video, and game controllers.

If you receive a message that the device is not working correctly, the sound card is not listed, or you must obtain driver software, contact your sound card manufacturer for more help. You may also have to contact the computer manufacturer if you find that the steps to update the sound card driver do not work.

PS: A good idea would be to interface -somehow- the physical sound card to the guest. I have a Creative SoundBlaster Live! 1024 and I know I can install Windows XP drivers successfully in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode (I had once installed Vista RC1 in one partition). But I prefer to run Vista in a window (using VMWare Workstation) so I have the full functionality of Windows XP Pro while experimenting with Vista.

When I recently bought a new computer which came with Windows 10, it has an excellent audio quality in comparison with my Windows Vista computer. As I discovered, that-s due to the Dolby Atmos program which came installed. I tried other programs like Equalizer APO, but none of such programs where able to emulate such Dolby Atmos effect. For example, Equalizer APO and HeSuVi works in Windows Vista, but it moves the channels too strange and can-t emulate properly the Dolby effect despite that I tried to configure the channels and the presset, but I'm still not very happy with the result. As far as I read, Dolby Atmos works diferent cause it thread the audio as 3D sound, so it usually don't do such strange things with the channels. Other programs which I tried generates a lot of reverb or don't work very well with my USB audio soundcard. So, is there a Dolby Atmos or similar software for Windows Vista and older systems?

I connect the headphones to an USB soundcard. The best thing that I found is installing Logitech driver despite that the sound card is not logitech, but I at least get 5.1/7.1 (Vista think that it is 5.1/7.1) then I applied HeSuVi, at least I reduced the "channel issue". It sounds a little bit better despite that it's not the exact Dolby Atmos emulation, but I think it could be the best possibility, maybe is it the closest thing to Dolby's Windows 10 surround for Windows Vista users?

I have a system that can only expand with ISA slots to be able to mount a sound card. I read that on windowsXP there are drivers for the Sound Blaster 16, are they also present for the Sound Blaster Pro? And on Windows 7 are there still drivers for these two isa cards?

No, i want to play XP native games on XP using a real sound card, my cpu board maximum is K6III 400Mhz with onboard c&t69000 and some isa card that i have for sound. While the cpu i think is enough for some xp games like age of empire, i am not sure if my isa sound cards support for example games like age of empire and similar games which are native to winXP.

If you are not going to be using DOS, there is absolutely no point in using an ISA sound card . If you happen to have an ISA sound card that works with Windows XP, there is no harm in using it, though . However, the better Windows-oriented PCI sound cards like the Sound Blaster Live!, Audigy and X-FI (not their hobbled variants, check before you buy) and Aureal Vortex family cards will give you hardware-accelerated positional audio in games that support it, if this is of interest to you .

no we still don't understand each other. the system is primarily used for DOS games, and they work well. But I wanted to know if in games designed for windows (98 or XP) my ISA sound cards would work or I need to get a computer with pci slot to use pci sound cards. For example, games like Red Alert would work soundly from a sb16 tops would work with a live! ? And if so, what differences there would be apart from the use of more speakers with live music! and perhaps a lower cpu load for sound.

There are quite a few cases when WDM drivers for PCI sound cards were successfully ported under Windows Vista, usually by modifying *.inf files of the driver and adding some libraries missing in the distribution. And it works. Both in Vista and Windows 7.

After installing your M-Audio USB, FireWire, or PCI sound card, Windows designates this new device as the system default playback device. However, you can follow these steps if you would like to use your laptop speakers or previous sound card for system sounds or applications such as Windows Media Player, iTunes, or WinAmp.

Regrettably, Microsoft made some changes to the audio controls which negatively impact the ability of users to record or input sound with a microphone using the internal sound card. On the other hand, USB microphones and USB sound devices continue to work easily in Windows Vista.

The aim of EAX was to create more ambiance within video games by more accurately simulating a real-world audio environment. Up to EAX 2.0, the technology was based around the effects engine aboard the E-mu 10K1 on Creative Technology's and the Maestro2 on ESS1968 chipset driven sound cards. The hardware accelerated effects engine is an E-mu FX8010 DSP integrated into the Creative Technology's audio chip and was historically used to enhance MIDI output by adding effects (such as reverb and chorus) to the sampled instruments on 'wavetable' sample-based synthesis cards (which is often confused with the "wavetable synthesis" developed by Wolfgang Palm of PPG and Michael Mcnabb in the late-1970s, however not related). A similar effects DSP was also present on Creative's cards back to the AWE 32. However, the EMU10K1's DSP was faster and more flexible and was able to produce not only MIDI output but also other outputs, including the digital sound section.

Developers taking advantage of EAX choose an environment for their game's setting and the sound card uses the mathematical DSP digital filter presets for that environment. The original EAX was quite primitive, only offering 26 presets and 3 parameters for more accurate adjustment of the listener parameters and 1 parameter for the sources. Each revision of the technology increased the available effects. EAX Advanced HD (also known as EAX 3) and up provide support for new environmental transitions, new effects, and multiple active effects. Further additions include smooth changes between EAX environment presets and audio occlusion effects (simulating a wall between player and sound source). 0852c4b9a8
