My circumstances: most of my listening is on a desktop computer; some is my car or via a Sonos box in my living room. I also listen to music while travelling, in which case I need it downloaded to my phone.

I have to respectfully disagree with just about everything in this article. I started out a few years back using Classical Music Archives but the downside was its low quality streaming and the facts that it didn't have the biggest classical labels. Then I discovered Rdio & Spotify. I found both quite outstanding once I figured out that I could join Spoitfy without a Facebook account. Took a bit of searching but now I subscibe to the premium service and it is very good. High quality streams and very up to date. The one downside, and it is a biggy, is that you cannot search by label or for new classical releases. Some enterprising users though have started up a tool called Ullyses which is in the sidebar. This group of users post new releases with a sample track. Click the track and it takes you to the full album in Spotify.

Rdio is the classical music streaming site par excellence. You can search by artist, genre or even label. Once inside, for example, the BIS Label area, you can search by name or by release date. Holy cow. Please take note Spotify. As for Cassical Music Archives, I really wanted to stay with them as I did with the Naxos Classical site, but they were overpowered by better, higher quality options. Who wants to listen to average quality when both Spotify and Rdio stream in high standard sound? If only Rdio could get the Universal labels (Decca, Archiv and DG) I would ditch Spotify. Until then I pay premium of about $11 each a month. Bargain.

The music was super hard, but I loved it. And I did very well studying there. The main takeaway though was that working through classical repertoire on saxophone set me up with performing skills that were absolutely fine tuned. We might feel that there is a sense of inevitability about it, such that not a single note could be changed for the better.

Musical analysis is, essentially, the attempt to bridge the gap between our intuitions about music and our conscious knowledge of it. In analysing works that we feel to be intrinsically worthwhile we are trying to correlate our subjective responses with observable properties in the music.

In order to do this course successfully, we recommend that you should be comfortable in reading music to a certain level. If you have studied a musical instrument to even a modest level of proficiency your music reading ability will probably be sufficient.

Similarly a basic understanding of music theory will be helpful. You need not have taken any theory exams but if your knowledge of music theory is around Grade 5 in the ABRSM theory syllabus then you should be able to follow the course

To earn credit (CATS points) for your course you will need to register and pay an additional 10 fee for each course you enrol on. You can do this by ticking the relevant box at the bottom of the enrolment form or when enrolling online. If you do not register when you enrol, you have up until the course start date to register and pay the 10 fee.

Coursework is an integral part of all online courses and everyone enrolled will be expected to do coursework, but only those who have registered for credit will be awarded CATS points for completing work at the required standard. If you are enrolled on the Certificate of Higher Education, you need to indicate this on the enrolment form but there is no additional registration fee.
