I'm looking for the Nyala font specifically, which I can select in MS Office, e.g. Word. I was looking into the above folder using Windows Explorer, Total Commander (TC), and System Control Panel -> Fonts. Neither show a file called nyala.ttf. I have also searched the all of C:\Windows for a file called nyala.ttf but TC did not show any.

I started using Nyala in most of my Microsoft documents a few years ago -- it has a distinctive look and is nicely readable in small sizes. Then I learned that Nyala is actually an Ethiopian glyph font and its Latin letters are just a byproduct of the Ethiopian font. That means its Latin characters are a limited set, and I imagine someone who really knows typography would notice weaknesses compared to a font created specifically to display large amounts of European language text. I have a MS Word doc using the font Nyala. (Under Word/Options/Save/Preserve fidelity I have embedded all fonts in the file). Both Word --> PDF and Acrobat --> PDF properly display the font . This is only a problem when the font is the default "Normal Style" in MS Word. When the font is used in a different way - not the "Normal Style" - it is properly displayed.

I am currently using Calibre 6.5 on a Windows 10 PC. I cannot get Calibre to convert the file to an epub with the correct font. It seems to give me Times Roman. I even went to the config and embedded the Nyala font family. (I am pretty sure that older versions of Calibre supported the font, but maybe my memory is faulty.) Anyway, is this a bug? Is there a way to fix this?

I use a combination of an Initial Words with a word count of one and then I insert a Zero-width space after the first letter. It may be necessary to add the Zero-width space as an end character to the Paragraph Style's Initial Words. Make a Paragraph Style and a Character Style for this, use a large point size but leave the rest alone in the Character Style (base it on the same style as the Paragraph Style), or use a completely different font.

OB's work around would achieve the same thing though I don't quite follow all you said about creating the style with a zero space. I'm new to this, just trialling Affinity Publisher to assess how difficult it would be to move from PPX8.

Regarding the font rendering and leaving aside the Bold issue, I still see a significant difference between PPX8 and AFP in rendering even regular fonts. I've attached a screen grab of a selection including Times New Roman and Arial. This is not an artifact of my screen as I printed out samples direct from both PPX8 and AFP and got the same result in hard copy.
