I do not understand why this behavior is happening. It cannot be browser dependent as it is downloading. It may be SharePoint library settings but I can only find settings to force it to open in app or browser NOT download?

@ShelliG_N It probably won't have an effect on your issue, but that is the browser that I have been testing with--if you were using the older version of Edge, it might have different functionality, like downloading instead of opening a file.

@80Mark80 Has anyone solved this mystery. I have tried all of the suggestions. I have a list created, and within the list, one of the columns is a hyperlink to an excel document. I am using Chrome. I did try switching by default browser to Edge, and the link still did not open in the desktop app. My site and library setting both open in the client application. Here are two different versions of my link. The names are changed for security purposes.

@ShelliG_N I hope your day is great but the behavior you are experiencing with Excel files downloading instead of opening in the native app might be related to the file association settings on your computer, as well as how SharePoint handles links to files.

- Navigate to the SharePoint document library where the Excel files are stored.

- Click on the "Library" tab on the top ribbon, then click on "Library Settings."

- Under the "General Settings," click on "Advanced settings."

- Look for the "Opening Documents in the Browser" section. Ensure that "Open in the client application" is selected. This should force the file to open in the Excel desktop application instead of downloading.

- Go to the SharePoint site's home page.

- Click on the gear icon (settings) in the top-right corner and select "Site settings."

- Under the "Site Collection Administration" section, click on "Site collection features."

- Check if the "Open Documents in Client Applications by Default" feature is activated. If not, activate it, and this should force documents to open in the client application instead of downloading.

When I download an excel or csv file from an online source, the document downloads, but it contains no data. It is just a blank document with no lines or values in cells. This problem just started, and happens with multiple websites from which I have downloaded successfully before. I currently have Microsoft 365.

The file you are trying to download is simply not an excel file. Actually what you obtain is an html file (try to change the file extension to '.html', then open in your browser). So your code is not the problem.

Microsoft Excel is the leading spreadsheet program in the market, providing all the necessary tools to organize, manipulate, and manage all kinds of data. Developed by Microsoft, Excel is available as a standalone program within the Office productivity suite or as part of the subscription service in the cloud, Microsoft 365. Thanks to its intuitive cell-based interface and its comprehensive selection of tools for performing mathematical and statistical calculations, this superb software is considered essential in work and educational environments. Despite the existence of powerful free alternatives like Google Sheets or Zoho Sheet, downloading Excel remains the first choice for anyone looking for a quick and easy way to structure their data.

Just to clarify, you are able to download other types of files? I would think no file types would download in this situation. I find it strange it would only impact excel and csv files. Can you confirm you are able to download other file types with no problem?

I solved this on mine by going to iPad Settings, scroll down till you find the app settings, go to excel. There is a 'reset excel' option. When you click this it gives you two choices one is to reset completely, this removes all offline files and clears history - DON'T DO THIS.

I'll have a go downloading the file and using the TempPathnameCreator as a workaround, but it really does make me wonder what the point of downloading the file as an attribute is... it currently seems like half a solution, that doesn't result in anything different than just downloading the file in the first place.

Hi @Federico Coppola ,

Per my test, I cannot reproduce your issue. I created a new test list with 5800 pieces of data, however I opened it in excel successfully. You can try to create a new view to limit the number of items. Please go to the list settings>Create view, then create filters according to your needs and limit the number of returned items to less than 5000. Then export it again after setting it as the default to see if it works.

In order not to cause misunderstanding, you can set the new view as the default.

Hi,

Apologies for the issue you're experiencing. I tried this scenario and I'm unable to reproduce this issue on my end. I am able to download the excel file and also load the data into it. I have attached the screenshots for your reference.

Can you please check if your organization has turned off export to Excel in the tenant settings?

Can you also provide the .har file to me for us to troubleshoot this issue further? Here's instructions on how you can do that: How to collect a network trace | Microsoft Learn

I've downloaded reports to Excel but not sure proper procedure to save. Is CSV file okay? Anyway, once it's on my computer and I go back to open it, up pops Text Import Wizard asking me a bunch of things I don't understand and the Excel file is all jumbled up! Also, is there a way to delete the columns from the reports before downloading? I only want a little bit of the information. Thanks!

I submitted an excel file into an assignment, but when I try to download the file again, it is downloading as an annotated PDF. How can I download the file I submitted as an excel/CSV file? I'm on a different computer now so I don't have access to the original file.

hi team

I have a task to download nearly 400000 records from the incident table to a excel (.xlsx). but the limit I can reach is 50,000 records as SNOW system restrictions.

I have searched the articles and found that I can change the system properties ' System Properties > Import Export' . But system prevent me overriding the value for rows in excel (.xlsx) section.

further Break up a large export (servicenow.com) depicts how to accomplish the requirement for XML.

I tried several times to tweak the code to EXCEL (XLSX) but downloading does not start.

Okay, I am actually using Excel, not Google sheets (are they interchangeable?) Anyways, yes I do have the filenames, sheet names, source queries all ready to go, but just trying to figure out a way to export them all into an Excel object (one query result per Excel worksheet) and then when all done, download the Excel file with the pre specified name. My main issue I am trying to solve with this is I have my database in Snowflake and need to export some queries from there into a Single Excel fie so I can then load that single Excel file into a 3rd party program. Have the Retool tool completely built for this and it works excellently! EXCEPT for this very last piece of functionality.

This works perfectly, and I was able to get the plugin implemented into my code! I was also wondering if it was possible to manually write in and edit spreadsheets from ImageJ? For example, if at the end of each for loop, is it possible to add the value of a variable to the end of an existing excel spreadsheet? Thank you so much for your help!!

After downloading data exported from the Data & Analysis section of Qualtrics and attempting to open it in Excel, it's possible to get an error from Excel similar to, "Sorry, we couldn't find C:\Users\[NetID]\AppData\Local\Temp\... is it possible it was moved, renamed, or deleted?" This issue can be caused if Qualtrics downloaded the file in a compressed Zip format, and the file was not extracted in a way that Excel can use.

If you are having trouble accessing or decompressing the Zip file, you can instead try downloading the data in a non-compressed format. See Qualtrics' Data Export Options and make sure the box for Compress data as .zip file is not checked when you export the data.
