According to Wikipedia WinZip uses .zipx as extension for Zip archives that use compression methods newer than deflate. Deflate is perhaps the minimum standard of Zip which everyone can compress or extract but newer algorithms like bzip2, LZMA or PPMd+ are also defined by the standard.

As Johannes Rossel mentioned SharpZipLib is a decent compression library written in C# and has source code available. This library is used in various projects as well and seems to have decent support. The only negative aspect is that I don't think they currently support WinZip's new zipx format. In fact I haven't found any other application or library that currently supports this new format other than WinZip. If you need a library for their new format probably the first place to start checking is with the WinZip support department to see if they have a native library available that could be wrapped or some specifications on the new format. If this file format is a closed spec then unfortunately you may not have many options.

I tried WinZIP new .zipx format. It is really compress .jpeg to 15-25%. I was confident that jpeg format is not compressible. I heard rumors that they use StaffIT algorithm (Sorry, I can not confirm it). By the way is 7-ZP support StuffIT? What do you think about it?

I would like to see this feature too. We have a guy that likes Total Commander and he always sends me .zipx files deceivingly named .zip. The explorer replacement I use, make clever use of 7 zip for formats it doesn't support internally (Directory Opus - Call it a norton/total/midnight commander clone for the uninitiated). It is set up to use 7zip for zipx. It would be really nice if 7 zip supported the format.

But still, the student who study in my school usually use zipx format to deliver their files.(I use 7z)When some of my classmates send me a file, he/she usually use zipx format to pack/compress the files to send to me. However, someone at Avaya decided to zip up and post some technical information that I needed to access in that format. I compressed my folder using Windows7 and it compressed to zipx format. How can I extract it in ubuntu 12.04 because it encountered error while extracting. When I google for it I came across this ' -zipx-file-linux-ubuntu-or-mac-anything-other-windows-7' but it also gives me unsupprted error while installing. Is their any other perfect solution.

Since the ZIPX file format is rather newly introduced by WinZIP, there are few zip utilities supporting it (WinRAR doesn't support ZIPX yet, neither does 7Zip). Thus, if you happen to encounter a corrupt zipx file you cannot repair it since no zipx repair utilities are yet available, so the only option is to go back and repackage the files (if you still have them) and only after that re-create the zipx archive.

OSX users can use Stuffit Deluxe 2009 for Mac ($50 USD) to decompress these files. (The zipxfile.com claims Stuffit Deluxe can do it, but I actually don't see that specified on the Stuffit site, so look carefully before buying.)
