WZRD (/dblju-zi-r-di/) is the debut studio album by American alternative rock duo WZRD, composed of musicians Dot da Genius and Kid Cudi. It was released on February 28, 2012, via Universal Republic Records and GOOD Music, also in conjunction with Cudi's then-newly founded label imprint, Wicked Awesome Records. The album was supported by the lead singles "Brake" and "Teleport 2 Me, Jamie".

The album, which was produced entirely by the duo themselves, debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 66,000 physical and digital copies in the United States.[1] The album also debuted at number one on the Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts.

On May 31, 2011, Cudi released the first offering from his rock band, a song titled "Perfect Is the Word". It was the first song Kid Cudi and Dot da Genius worked on for the album.[4] During a Ustream broadcast they revealed a song titled "Rocket" and announced it will serve as the second single.[5] On November 10, 2011, Kid Cudi revealed that the only guest appearance on the album would be Australian indie-rock band Empire of the Sun.[6][7] On November 18, 2011, Kid Cudi renamed the band once again to 'WZRD', and announced that the album would be released on his 28th birthday, January 30, 2012.[8][9][10] On November 20 Kid Cudi announced via Twitter that his upcoming album will not contain any profanity including the use of the word nigga.[11] Kid Cudi released "Brake", the first offering from the album on November 21, 2011. On December 5, 2011, Kid Cudi released a snippet of "Teleport 2 Me, Jamie", the album's lead single.

According to Kid Cudi, bands that inspired the album include Electric Light Orchestra, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Pixies and Pink Floyd.[21][22] On February 23, the entirety of the album was leaked online.

The album's cover art was designed by American fashion designer Virgil Abloh.[23] The album was the first to be released under Wicked Awesome Records, a new imprint Kid Cudi had announced in April 2011, in conjunction with Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music label and Universal Republic.[24][25][26]

The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 66,000 physical and digital copies in the United States.[1] The album also debuted on the Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums at number one, and at number nine on the Canadian Albums Chart, respectively. The album to date has sold 84,000 copies in the United States.[38]

Kid Cudi, who has had label issues in the past, was less than pleased with the support he received from his label Universal Republic, for WZRD. He claimed the album was under shipped and rushed by his major label in hopes that Kid Cudi would move on to Man on the Moon III, which led Cudi to let out his frustrations on online social networking service, Twitter:

WZRD is the self-titled debut studio album by American pop rock/alternative rock duo WZRD, composed of recording artist Kid Cudi and record producer Dot Da Genius. The album was released on February 28, 2012, via Universal Republic Records.

At retail, Trans World Music urban buyer Christina Amadore-Smith said that despite the change in musical direction, she brought the album in heavy and it is already outselling her aggressive projection.

A recently sober and arguably renewed Cudi has really poured himself into this album, speaking of his life struggles and search for happiness. However, his sobriety is possibly the only good thing that has come out of this album. To be frank, the music is bad.

Kid Cudi fans will have to wait until next year to get their hands on a new album. The G.O.O.D. Music rapper has announced a name change for his rock band with producer Dot da Genius, as well as a release date for their debut.

The biggest takeaway I was left with after taking my first lap around @wizardcud and @dotdagenius's new WZRD album was "I can't believe they covered a legendary Nirvana track." It was one of the biggest mind (f word)s I've been blindsided by in quite a while when reviewing music. Why was it such a big surprise? For starters, shame on me for having absolutely zero familiarity with WZRD's tracklist. As a result, I missed the Nirvana connection completely prior to listening to it. Second, I can't believe Cudi had the audacity to cover a track that is so legendary. I say legendary because anybody who has seen the haunting and distinctly memorable MTV Unplugged session was moved in some way shape or form by watching Kurt Cobain perform acoustic that night with Nirvana. The video below sums up how memorable the show was as Kurt ended the set with an exclamation point in the form of Where Did You Sleep Last Night...

Before I get into the new school version, you'd all be better off knowing how far back the original Bluegrass version of the track goes. Little known fact (thanks to Wikipedia), the song also goes by the name of In the Pines (Bill Monroe) and Black Girl (Huddie Ledbetter). Even better, the song's origins date all the way back to the 1870s when it was first an Appalachian folk song. To me it's crazy how little Leadbelly's version that was produced back in 1940 has evolved from the version that Nirvana popularized. Crazy, but also awesome to see American folklore unfold through the generations and becoming timeless as a result.

Fast forward to the present and you can appreciate how Cudi has some serious balls for trying to tackle such a challenge on his first rock flavored album. I'm not going to try and gas you all up by saying his cover of the track was near as good as the original, but I will say that I found it noteworthy and memorable that he chose to do his own version. What I really wanted was for him to do was absolutely cut loose on the last part of the track like Kurt did by belting out the eerie "MY GIRL, MY GIRL, DON'T LIIIIEE TO ME, TELL ME WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT?!?!?." Maybe that was part of making it his own, but I feel like if he would have went a little psycho and added a little yelling, I may have gotten a little more hype over it.Ā

In case you missed it WZRD's album just dropped last week and thanks to Cudi's record company, not much effort was made to make the public aware of that. You'd think that would result in the album facing an uphill battle with sales, but 70K sales in the first week is not bad at all. That's right Cudi, you tell Universal what's up. They don't deserve to rake in the profits for being retarded enough to not believe that your rock album would sell. As side note, I hope you take the high road when the dust settles and don't deprive your fans of MOTM 3 in a fit of vindictive rage against your label. Your music speaks louder against authority than any twitter post and if one thing's been made clear through all this, it's that your music is powerful and your fans don't need it shoved down their throat to appreciate it...#PlayOnPlaya

Perhaps once Cudi can settle on a definitive sound, he will be able to form one completely coherent album. Until then, one can enjoy his hip-hop sensibilities and schizophrenic musical arrangements as he strives for an all-encompassing style.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way fell 84.27 percent in its second week on the Billboard's chart in June 18, 2011. Gaga's album bowed the previous frame at No. 1 with 1.11 million, and then sold 174,000 in its second week at the top of the chart. Born This Way's debut was amplified by Amazon MP3's decision to offer the set at 99 cents twice on two separate days during its premiere week.

The rapper Mac Miller released his album Blue Slide Park on Nov. 8, 2011, but by Dec. 3, the sales had dropped 82.54 percent according to Billboard's chart, jumping from 144,000 to 25,000 at No. 24.

The Edge, an album with three discs featuring rock hits from artists like Bush, Oasis, Sublime and Evanescence also dropped its sales 87.19 percent sliding from 53,000 at No. 4 to 7,000 at No. 81.

The pop rock duo from New York City formed by Scott "Kid Cudi" Mescudi and record producer Oladipo "Dot da Genius" Omishore also dropped its sales 84.25 percent in its 2nd week. Their album WZRD went from 70,000 at No. 3 to 10,000 at No. 34.

The album Passion: White Flag, released on March 31, 2012 dropped 83.71 percent on Billboard's chart. The sales went from 49,000 at No. 5 to 8,000 at No. 51. The album was recorded live at Passion 2012 with more than 42,000 university-aged students in Atlanta and featured songs from artists Chris Tomlin, David Crowder*Band, Charlie Hall and Matt Redman among others.

Just days ago, rap icon Future, also known Nayvadius Wilburn, tweeted the tracklist to his 20 song album the Wzrd. The tweet blew up all over social media after being shared thousands of times. The tweet was posted on Jan. 17 and the album released the following day. The album had features from some of the hottest artists in hip hop today.

When the record was released, WZRD quickly topped the Billboard charts at No. 3, selling 66,000 copies in the first week. While working on WZRD Cudi said he had writers block for five months. He said his style changed because he listened to Electric Light Orchestra, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana and Pink Floyd and they helped inspire the album.

Ok so just a heads up, my weak ass label only shipped 55k physicals cuz they treated this like some indie side project tax right off. So i apologize on behalf of my weak ass major label. And I apologize for the lack of promo, again, my weak ass major label. They tried to rush me thru this so i can just give em another MOTM, but guess what? Fuck that, next album isĀ

When Kid Cudi is mad, he lets the world know it. The man on the moon blew a fuse over Universal under-shipping copies of his rock debut, WZRD. The albums was released yesterday but Cudders found out only 55,000 physical units were sent to stores. Read what he posted on twitter about the release: 0852c4b9a8
