The Print Shop is a home oriented publisher capable of creating calendars, banners, greeting cards and other printable goods. It started off on the Apple II and Commodore 64 where it became popular for its simplicity and ease of use. From day one, it featured interactive editing, on-screen artwork/layout selection, print previewing, and a library of customizable clipart.

The Print Shop is a basic desktop publishing software package originally published in 1984 by Broderbund. It was unique in that it provided libraries of clip art and templates through a simple interface to build signs, posters and banners with household dot-matrix printers.[1] Over the years, the software has been updated to accommodate changing file formats and printer technologies.

Ahoy!'s reviewer called the Commodore 64 version of The Print Shop "one of the best thought out, easiest to use packages I've come across", reporting that he did not need to use the manual to produce his first greeting cards. He predicted that the software "is destined to become one of the most popular packages for the Commodore 64".[7] II Computing criticized the Apple II version's inflexible layout options and lack of print preview, but concluded that it "is truly 'a graphics utility for the rest of us', encouraging creativity and self-expression ... you'll want to use this program over and over again".[8]

Many new versions of The Print Shop followed, such as Ensemble II. Now over 20 years old, Print Shop still generates printed greeting cards, banners, and signs. It offers new types of printed output, including CD and DVD labels and inserts, iPod skins, and photo book pages. For small-business users, it also offers projects such as business cards, letterheads, and presentations.

The latest The Print Shop Deluxe 6.0 comes with new templates, upgraded editing capabilities tailored for functionality, and several more new features. The productivity suite will cover any of your printing needs. If you are part of a small organization that needs to reach out to supporters, a local business owner searching for templates, or a designer looking to produce beautiful ad materials, The Print Shop Deluxe is worth checking out.

I installed Print Shop 6.0 a number of years ago. I was able to print using our Epson printer until that died. Then we got this HP OfficeJet 6978, and I was able to print from it up until a few months ago. Now when I try to print, the printer makes noises like it's going to print, but then gets quiet after doing absolutely nothing. No document jobs ever show up in the printer's job queue. It's like the printer isn't acknowledging Print Shop, except that it does make the noises that it does right before printing from other apps. Does anyone have a solution? I have tried reinstalling the printer driver several times, but it didn't do anything.

Jack-of-all-trades, master of none

Print Shop 12.0 does many tasks adequately but few superbly. People's exhibit No. 1: the integrated Photo Workshop. Although Print Shop has added plenty of new special effects for imaging editing, including warps and distortions, it's not up to the standards of, say, Picture It 2002. To crop an image tightly around its outline, for instance, you must draw lines, one at a time, to create the cropping area; there's no automated cropping tool. Ugh!

We recommend Print Shop for any at-home print job, but its folksy clip art and predesigned templates don't evoke the professionalism that small businesses need, especially when it comes to newsletters, brochures, presentations, and letterhead templates. Small businesses on a budget should skip this app in favor of Publisher 2002.
