I have mentioned this frequently on my blog before, but I am a massive fan of Chinese dramas, especially Wuxia dramas. Wuxia pretty much combins martial arts with heroes (wu meaning military and xia meaning hero or chivalrous person). Probably the most famous Wuxia author is China was Louis Cha, who wrote under the pen name of Jin Yong. He was born in 1924 and passed away just a few months ago in October of 2018 at the ripe age of 94. He wrote over a dozen books, but perhaps his most famous series was The Legend of the Condor Heroes and its two sequels, serialized in the late 1950s.
This a classic story that works in the framework of themes and ideas like honor, love, loyalty, revenge, destiny. Modern audiences seeking more psychology, internalism, and grey area morality may need to adjust their expectations, but they too will soon be swept up in these grandiose emotions. In the world of the Condor Heroes there are clear heroes and clear villains.
Of course, none of that shakes our main couple, the adorable Huang Rong and the upright (if it kills him) Guo Jing. Aside from bits of sensationalism in some scenes, it really does attempt portraying the characters in a slice-of-life manner, which I like, muchly, and at least tries to discard the one-dimensional heroes Jin Yong set out in the first place.
The first part of the novel revolved around the friendship of two young men, Yang TieXin and Guo XiaoTian, who became heroes in their own right as they fought the invading Jin soldiers. The bond between the duo was so strong that they pledged to each other that their unborn children will become either sworn siblings (if both are of the same sex) or be married (if they are of opposite sexes).
