The songs of the film were mostly composed by Jeet Gannguli, although Mithoon and Ankit Tiwari composed two songs each (including both versions) as guest composers. Irshad Kamil wrote lyrics for most of songs on the album. Sandeep Nath wrote both versions of "Sunn Raha Hai", while Mithoon wrote "Tum Hi Ho" and Sanjay Masoom wrote "Bhula Dena". Arijit Singh sang six of the songs on the album.[1] Jeet Gannguli reused the tune from his own Bengali composition "Mon Hariye Beghorey" for "Milne Hai Mujhse Aayi" and "Aaj Tomai Niye Shuru Holo Notun Jibon" for "Hum Mar Jayenge".[2]

The whole album though was based on love except for the youth-appealing song "Sunn Raha Hai", the quality and freshness was splendidly unmatchable from other hit albums like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express, Kai Po Che, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Phata Poster Nikla Hero, Raanjhanaa, Dhoom 3 and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, of that year.

Aashiqui 2's soundtrack received acclaim from music critics, who praised the songs "Tum Hi Ho" and both versions of "Sunn Raha Hai". The Times of India rated the album 5 out of 5 stars and wrote, "Aashiqui 2 tries, and succeeds to some extent in matching the repeat-values freshness and allure of the original. And while it is unfair to compare a sequel to the original, it needs to be said that each should be seen for its own merit."[4]

This album introduced the typical lo-fi, electronic music with the man singing as if he's drunk - a heavy downgrade from what we were getting till 2012. Music labels now seem to heavily rely on releasing this kind of music, there's no variety unlike pre-13 (the classical Carnatic music of AR Rahman, the electro-pop of Vishal-Shekhar and Pritam, the fusion of SEL). Hence, I feel the release of this album marks the beginning of Bollywood music's decline.

Bollywood films have always had story and song walk hand-in-hand. Together, they are complete, better, more appealing, and capable of standing the test of time. 8 years ago when the Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Aashiqui 2 released, it was to be the perfect marriage of story and song. Like just about any Vishesh Films offerings. But 8 years and counting, Aashiqui 2 is remembered for its songs and songs alone, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of fans.

Aashiqui 2, from the word go, had a lot going for it. It had the legacy of its successful predecessor, Aashiqui. On top of that, the story for the sequel was inspired by the 1954 and 1976 versions of the 1937 film A Star Is Born, Needless to say, songs and music was going to be an integral part of the film. But perhaps no one anticipated the film to go down in posterity solely because of its songs.

Neither Aditya nor Shraddha were newcomers, but what Aashiqui 2 gave them was unlike what any other film did. They became overnight stars. Credit, of course, goes to the collective magic created by Jeet Gannguli (music, except two songs), Irshad Kamil (lyrics, except two songs) and the buttery voices of Arijit Singh and Palak Muchhal. Who could forget Chahun Main Ya Naa? The audience stayed fixated on the screens, crying and smiling with our lead actors, by the hypnotic effect of the melody.

Aashiqui 2 received mixed to bad reviews from the critics. The audience too didn't invest as much in the story as one would have wanted them to. Yet the film remains an unforgettable film. For sometimes in Bollywood, songs surpass story. And Aashiqui 2 is proof.

The first film in this franchise was released in 1990 with Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal in the lead. The Mahesh Bhatt directorial had chartbuster songs like Nazar Ke Saamne, Bas Ek Sanam Chaahiye and Dheere Dheere among others. 23 years later, Shraddha Kapoor starred in Aashiqui 2 opposite Aditya.

In one of the scenes, which required Shraddha to shatter a glass cabinet by walking through it, the actress ended up severely injuring her leg. Her costume prevented her from wearing kneepads for precaution. However, Shraddha completed the shot in a single take despite injury.
