Microsoft Photo Story is a free application that allows users to create a visual story (show and tell presentation) from their digital photos.[1] The software uses the Ken Burns Effect on digital photos and allows adding narration, effects, transitions and background music to create a Windows Media Video movie file with pan and zoom effects. Once a photo story has been made, it can be played on a PC using Windows Media Player. Since the .wmv format is used, Windows Media Video Image (a sub-set of Windows Media Video) is incompatible with domestic DVD players, users wishing to create a DVD or CD will need to use third-party tools to convert into DVD compatible (e.g. MPEG 2) format first.

Version 2 was included in Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition and Microsoft Digital Image Suite versions 9 and 10.[1] It supported exporting the photo story as a Video CD. Version 3.0, although still a free download from Microsoft, removed direct Video CD burning, but supported a paid-for add-on from Sonic Solutions for exporting and burning the photo story to DVD.

The final free download version (3.0) includes the ability to randomly generate background music which is composed on the fly from a combination of themes and also includes basic photo editing and touchup features.[2]

Photo Story originally was based on a Microsoft Research project in photo sharing.[4] The chief finding of that research was that people narrated better stories when they moved their hands, made gestures and pointed at their images. Early Photo Story prototype versions encouraged people to point at their images using the mouse, as the pointing would affect the algorithm that generated the pans and zooms.

The chargeable 'Roxio' plug-in (now owned by Sony) allows users to 'burn' their completed 'story' direct to a DVD or CD. Sonic MyDVD (v5.5 or higher) is required if you want to edit the disc and add more stories or movies, thus more available storage.

Hi Steven, it is absolutely not necessary to tell a story, if the goal is just to get a photograph. The question is, if your photograph should get to art. If yes, there are a couple of things to be fulfilled, to bring it to art. One of the most important requirement for getting art - and here it doesn't matter if it is painting, singing, photography or whatever - is to create something new. If we just capture reality, we don't create something new. But the story can create something new for us. This is what the "Gestalt Theory" is all about: "The whole is more than the sum of its parts". So, there is no need to bring a story into a photograph, but you can.

Christian ... The story about the birch trees is 'your' story. I would have to ponder the birch trees a very long time before I would have to landed upon 'confidence'. My point being that the moral of the story, confidence, is a projection of your personality. My story about the birch trees would project my underlying needs, conflicts and values. That's why (in my opinion) characterizing what you're doing as 'telling a story' is confusing and off-putting to people. Telling a story is such a concrete notion to most of us. What we're trying to accomplish operates more like reading Rorschach Ink blot, where the viewer is projecting their unique story into the image, often from the depths of Pandora's Box. If the image is well conceived it should elicit some level of emotional response on a non-verbal, abstract level. It's upon this emotional foundation a viewer may or may not develop a dream/story comprised of a swirl of emotional fragments that coalesce into a feeling state of some sort. Hi Stewart, thank you for your detailled comment. You got it :) This is exactly how I'm convinced of how art works. It is all about interpretation, that leads into the story. Five different artists could see five different stories here. And it is the interpretation that could lead into a totally different story at the viewer's side. It is his experience and his preferences that avoke emotions and let him interpret the scene. There is absolutely no need for a match to the interpretation of the artist. For me the image title is anyway important, as it can bring the viewer to think about why the artist decided for that one and how he has interpreted the scene. The integrity of the artist is even a base requirement for getting a piece of art finally.

One of the big revelations for me was my love for black and white photography. Before, I would simply convert a photograph to black and white out of necessity. Perhaps the white balance was off or the color was distracting. But now, because I have slowed down, I shoot intentionally to create black and white photos and I LOVE it.

Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule. At certain times, the clutter of a scene is what contributes most to the story. Any mother can related to the mess of toys scattered about and dirty hands and faces!

This will ensure that the details remain intact on the most important part of your photo. For those times when the light is bright in one are and the shadows are dark in another, spot metering can save an image!

Shooting with different types of light (harsh light, directional, dappled, low light, artificial) can alter the story your trying to tell with your image. Pushing yourself to try different light sources is such an incredible way to get more comfortable behind your camera.

Take time to assess a scene and identify if there are details that might add depth to the story you are trying to tell. Here, my little artist is hard at work. I love the way the light is shining on her as she creates.
