EDIT: It seems you need to enter the console before you go into the game. Press ~ at the game startup menu. Now when I type the above, it says it cannot open Demos/demo001.dm_68. Where do you find these?

Some engines allow the user to "capture" recorded demos as video files which can then be played back by standard media players or shared on video hosting sites. Notable examples are Darkplaces, FTEQW, Mark V as well as JoeQuake and its derivatives like QRACK.

Couldn't use the mouse that well, because the screen wouldn't grab your cursor, also it wouldn't save any settings, or hold on to saves after you quit, but Trent Reznor's title theme and John Romero's demo just drew me in, and I just had to play that bitch.

But I did do every check on the file from Github and my original version, MD5, MD4, SHA1, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, RIPEMD160, PANAMA, TIGER, MD2, ADLER32, CRC32, every result was an exact match. And it's not impossible that someone could fake it, but damn that's a lot of work. Especially for someone who simply posted the shareware .pak for Quake on Github, and has a total of 46 followers. And the project description was: "This is a demo for openshift-origin running WebQuake in a pod using nginx as the webserver." With only the shareware .pak available, so I was pretty confident that it was legitimate. But it's nice to have confirmation, I hate telling people to go and download something without knowing where it came from. That's why I checked it myself beforehand, but having a tool like Hashcalc will make me more confident in the future.

The demo includes the map from the beta test, Valley, which, while being fairly representative of the action from the game as a whole, is not the finest map the game has to offer. I can say this with some certainty because I've played Splash Damage at the entire game, including a run through each of the four campaigns. In the Quake series, Demos are "movies" of gameplay recorded by a person. The Quake games have built-in functionality to record short clips by using the "record" Console Command. Due to the way this is designed, demos must start recording at the start of a level, it is impossible to start a demo in the middle of a map. Due to this, this means that only the server itself can record a demo, none of the clients.

Demos output as .DEM files, which can be read by the game that recorded the file by using the "playdemo" Command. While part of the game, it is entirely a recording, meaning the player will have zero interaction with it. Furthermore, modifications do not affect demo files, meaning the experience may differ if custom QC files have been added.

While mostly outdated in the age of video sharing websites (which are far more convenient and don't require having the original game), demos were a convenient alternative to video files in the 90s, especially since the latter held a much larger file size.

These Demos load up with a certain game or collection of levels. They are mostly intended as a sort of teaser to showcase what the experience is like. The entire level will not be shown to retain some surprise elements in the levels. Often, they come in sets of three to replace the original three demos that shipped with the game, though this is by no means a requirement (a single demo could play over and over, for example).

As opposed to the Pre-Loaded Demo, regular demos require the user to have a filename along with the "playdemo" Command. These often showcase the player's ability, such as attempting a speedrun or winning a Deathmatch competition. Unlike the Pre-Loaded Demo, which is often about the new content, these focus primarily on the competitive aspect. These can also be used as Machinima films, simple tests, or various other features as desired.

Some PC gamers hover on the bleeding edge of technology, pushing modern titles to their limits with the best performance via the newest hardware around. Occasionally, though, new technology can be used to breathe life into some industry classics. Such is the case in a demo shown by NVIDIA during GDC 2019, where the team demoed an updated version of Quake 2 powered by the company's RTX tech.

The NVIDIA RTX Quake 2 demo features a version of the game that includes real-time ray traced global illumination and reflections, dynamic direct and indirect lighting effects, mimicked physical material light reflection properties, and volumetric lighting effects. One major change that would seem insignificant to gamers raised with more modern gaming experiences is that these changes allow the realistic experience of glass in one of the Quake 2 maps. In the original game, glass looked like a transparent piece of plastic, but the new tech gives it its reflective properties and realistic appearance.

If you watch the full Quake 2 RTX demo form GDC 2019, you'll also get a pretty cool treat at the end. The team didn't just remake the map, they added in a few weapons and some new effects.
