An easy way to compile and install GIMP and other great Free software on your Mac is by using Macports. The installer allows you to choose from a large directory of packages. To install gimp using Macports, you simply do sudo port install gimp once you have Macports installed.

Homebrew is similar to Macports and provides packages (aka formulas) to install, either by compiling them from source or by using pre-made binaries. There are indications that there is now a formula for GIMP, installable with: brew tap homebrew/cask && brew install --cask gimp.

Fink is a package repository that offer mostly precompiled binaries. It provides the apt-get command known to e.g. Debian and Ubuntu users, and installing GIMP is as easy as sudo apt-get install gimp once you have installed the Fink installer.

If there's no binary package, then fink install gimp will compile GIMP from source.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

You may have to do this a few times before you reach the actual exe file location. Using the latter method, the location turns out to be C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Programs\GIMP 2\bin\gimp-2.10.exe.

Thanks everyone for the help.

I uninstalled the Microsoft Store version of GIMP and installed it from the official GIMP website.

The location is, like @afre wrote, C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Programs\GIMP 2\bin\gimp-2.10.exe .

In recent versions (since the GIMP 2.9 build), the removal of the Lanczos image scaling algorithm, which had been used by GIMP and other image editing programs for many years, in favor of pushing forward the new NoHalo and LoHalo algorithms developed by Nicolas Robidoux, caused some controversy among GIMP users, with some users standing by the change but others expressing their dissatisfaction about it, due to mixed quality results in some image scaling scenarios, leading some users to keep using the older 2.8 version of GIMP simply because it's the last build with Lanczos support, and a few users giving up on using the application altogether as a result. To this day, several users hope to see a future version of GIMP with the Lanczos algorithm added back as an option for image resampling.[16][17][18]

Lifewire reviewed GIMP favorably in March 2019, writing that "[f]or those who have never experienced Photoshop, GIMP is simply a very powerful image manipulation program," and "[i]f you're willing to invest some time learning it, it can be a very good graphics tool."[61]

GIMP operations can be automated with scripting languages. The Script-Fu is a Scheme-based language implemented using a TinyScheme interpreter built into GIMP.[76] GIMP can also be scripted in Perl,[77][78] Python (Python-Fu),[79][80] or Tcl, using interpreters external to GIMP.[81] New features can be added to GIMP not only by changing program code (GIMP core), but also by creating plug-ins. These are external programs that are executed and controlled by the main GIMP program.[82][83] MathMap is an example of a plug-in written in C.[citation needed]

Because of the free and open-source nature of GIMP, several forks, variants and derivatives of the computer program have been created to fit the needs of their creators. While GIMP is cross-platform, variants of GIMP may not be. These variants are neither hosted nor linked on the GIMP site. The GIMP site does not host GIMP builds for Windows or Unix-like operating systems either, although it does include a link to a Windows build.

The program, which I downloaded twice, to see if I somehow had a baddownload, is in black and white, not color. The imported images(photos, etc) are in color, but the program itself (toolbox, layers, etc.) are all in black & white or grayscale. Help!

Hello, I am really new to this program. I downloaded and everything was in black & white. I now have a white background the icons are in color. BUT when I try to select the paint bucket or brush, I cannot get a color pallet. It's still a choice of black or white. What do I need to do to retrieve the colors for this program.

Photoshop is the cream of the crop; often hailed as the best and nothing less. It is an expensive nevertheless for those starting out in the field even with a discount. GIMP, something that I am sure many of you all have heard of, is a free open source alternative. Their default download is pretty stripped down. Documentation for all that it could do compared to numerous other programs is awfully poor in my opinion. The stock user interface also takes a negative hit. What it is, is not what it can become. That is a very powerful image editor. Folly! Surely that cannot be true sir?! It is. Maybe not superior as psd is, but reasonably close once it has been modified and extended. What I am not going to do is give you yet another thread about that however. There are hundreds that do so already.

Check out the development release (not stable) to see some of the changes they have made. There are some mixed quality videos about it on YouTube. I use paint.net for quick changes on the go instead of opening a heavy program. GimpShop (2.6.11 [sup][SIZE=1]Feb 2012[/SIZE][/sup]) is a modified version of [url= ]Gimp (2.6.12 [sup]Feb 2012[/sup]) closer to the Photoshop UI. A pitfall is that it is usually at least one version behind. :-/

Usually you start GIMP either by clicking an icon (if your system is set up to provide you with one), or by typing gimp on a command line. If you have multiple versions of GIMP installed, you may need to type gimp-2.10 to get the newest version. You can, if you want, provide a list of image file names on the command line after the program name so that GIMP automatically opens those files after it starts. It is also possible, though, to open files from within GIMP once it is running.

In LINUX: in console mode, type LANGUAGE=en gimp or LANG=en gimp replacing en with fr, de, ... according to the language you want. Background: Using LANGUAGE=en sets an environment variable for the executed program gimp.

Use -n to run multiple instances of GIMP. For example, use gimp-2.10 to start GIMP in the default system language, and LANGUAGE=en gimp-2.10 -n to start another instance of GIMP in English; this is very useful for translators.

Some of you might be thinking, what is GIMP? GIMP is a graphical program, just like PhotoShop and Paint Shop Pro. But the good part is that you can use GIMP for free. Yes, you read that correct GIMP is free, it is originally a Linux application, but there is also a version for Windows. You can read more about GIMP if you go to their website.

GIMP does contain almost all the features the other graphical programs have as well, but this tutorial will only deal with the transformation feature, that also allows you to correct perspective. I have never seen such a good tool, that is also that simple to use to remove perspective from a photo.

I've tried searching for ways to increase the screen size but all that shows up is how to scale images. Thing is I know how to change the image DPI but I want to know how to change the actual program's DPI, so that the icons are better suited to my computer screen.

I have gimp 2.8 on Windows 10 and this is what solved the small tool icons problem for me:open This PC > Local Disc (C:) > Program Files > GIMP 2 > bin, right click on gimp-2.8,open Properties, click on Compatibility. On the settings options select: Override high DPI scaling behaviour.Scaling performed by,scroll and select System,Apply,OK

There's and to name two but image conversion of these advanced formats may require review in the native program. I would not want to risk losing editable layers or effects to a limited conversion tool. I'd want to know what the file is supposed to look like before it is converted to PSD. Not all features translate.

A good solution would be a Photoshop plug in that allows Photoshop to load XCF files (Someone should code one!), but installing a converter program for a limited conversion is much worse than installing GIMP for a faithful conversion. It is the same effort after all so you ended up with the hassle you tried to avoid (Download installer, install, open the XCF file, save a PSD...) but with a less faithful conversion.

What I just encountered is GIMP hoarding or otherwise taking hostage my collection of ADOBE LOOPS. The files have been with me for a long time. I haven't had to delve into my audio library as deeply as I am having to for a new project. I can't find out the native file type because of this. I can't pull any of the files into Audition as Gimp will not release them. Very Strange Mercury in Retrograde... ALSO, there is nothing anywhere about this weirdness. Seems ambitious for a photo/graphics program to insist itself on an audio format file. -- Thanks for any consideration. Peace

Move your file to desktop, right-click to open with gimp, do what you need to do, then go to "save as", give your file a new name and (desired) extension then "save"->export prompt->"export" ignoring the (2) "no-permission" prompts in the process by clicking "ok". The new file (and extension) will be saved on your desktop as it should. 0852c4b9a8
