Room air cleaners are portable, electric appliances that remove fine particles, such as dust and pollen, from indoor air. A standard room air cleaner, operating continuously, uses approximately 450 kWh per year in electricity. This is more than the energy used by some new refrigerators!

ENERGY STAR certified room air cleaners are over 25% more energy-efficient than standard models, saving consumers about 120 kWh/year and $15 annually on utility bills. These savings could add up to $120 over its lifetime!

Portable air cleaners are designed to filter the air in a single room or area. They have demonstrated the potential for improving air quality and providing health benefits. Find the right room air cleaner product for your home with the tips below and read more about managing your indoor air quality in EPA's Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home (PDF, 3 MB).

The ENERGY STAR specification for room air cleaners measures energy efficiency by using a Clean Air Delivery Rate-to-Watt ratio. Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is a measure of the amount of contaminant-free air delivered by the room air purifier. Room air cleaners have demonstrated the potential for improving air quality and providing health benefits; however, EPA does not endorse manufacturer claims regarding the degree to which a specific product will produce healthier indoor.

While many room air cleaners are designed to sit on the floor, tabletop models and wall-mounting designs are also available. Regardless of configuration, it is important to read the accompanying product manual for instructions on where to place your room air cleaner to achieve optimum performance. Make sure the airflow is not obstructed. Keep air cleaners away from curtains and anything that might block airflow.

The ENERGY STAR specification for Room Air Cleaners (RACLs) is currently under revision. Materials related to this revision process are provided below. Stakeholders who received past communications related to development of Version 1.0 will continue to receive updates on this development effort. To be added to the contact list, stakeholders are encouraged to contact roomaircleaners@energystar.gov with their contact information to be added to the list.

Not all air-cleaning devices are appropriate for home use; some are known to be harmful to human and animal health. Ozone generators, which are portable or in-duct air cleaners that intentionally create ozone, can produce levels that are much higher than health-based standards. There are companies that try to sell the idea that breathing ozone is actually healthy, but there are 40 years of scientific studies that show even relatively low concentrations of ozone are harmful to biological tissue in plants and animals, including humans. It is well-documented that ozone can cause respiratory tract irritation and inflammation, serious breathing difficulty including asthma, permanent lung damage, and cardiovascular effects. The American Lung Association has concluded that breathing even low levels of ozone increases the risk of premature death.

In 2008, CARB enacted an air cleaner regulation to limit the ozone emissions from indoor air cleaning devices. The regulation requires all indoor air cleaners sold in California to be certified by CARB, including air cleaners sold online. Approved air cleaners are listed at California Certified Air Cleaning Devices, which is regularly updated. Approved air cleaners must also show a label on the packaging similar to the sample label shown below. Even though fully-integrated in-duct air cleaning devices are currently exempted from the regulation, some in-duct devices may create ozone at unhealthy levels. CARB is amending the air cleaner regulation to include in-duct devices in the future. For more information on the regulation, please read the Frequently Asked Questions.

BISSELL has received 17 reports of the recalled vacuum cleaners smoking and emitting a burning odor. Six of the reports included the battery pack catching fire, three of which resulted in minor property damage and two resulting in minor burn injuries.

Dry cleaning facilities that use perchloroethylene (perc) as a solvent must comply with the federal and state regulations. Federal and state laws governing dry cleaners require the use of certain types of dry cleaning equipment and specific waste management practices. Air, hazardous waste, and wastewater regulations apply to dry cleaners.

All dry cleaners must keep records of their monthly perc purchases, monitoring activities, and leak detection & repair program. Note, these records must be kept at your facility for a period of five years. The following record keeping items are required:

If a dry cleaner uses 140 gallons or more of PERC per year, then all machines must be checked weekly for leaks and record the results. If a dry cleaners uses less than 140 gallons of PERC per year, then leak inspections must be conducted and recorded at least every other week.

Dental floss (or dental tape) and other interdental cleaners (e.g., small brushes, special wooden or plastic picks, sticks or water flossers) removes food trapped between the teeth and removes the film of bacteria that forms there before it has a chance to harden into plaque.1 Toothbrush bristles alone cannot clean effectively between these tight spaces.2

Plaque that is not removed can harden into tartar, a hard mineral deposit that forms on teeth and can only be removed through professional cleaning by a dental professional.3 When this happens, brushing and cleaning between teeth become more difficult, and gum tissue can become swollen or may bleed. This condition is called gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. Interproximal cleaning techniques (e.g., manual or powered interdental cleaners, water flossers, interdental brushes), appear to add benefits in plaque reduction when used in association with conventional manual brushes.3 The choice between technique type should be made in relation to the characteristics of the patient; for example, dental floss could be indicated in individuals with closed interdental spaces, and interproximal brushes in patients with periodontitis or in those with more open interproximal spaces.3

Interdental cleaning helps remove debris and interproximal dental plaque, the plaque that collects between two teeth.3 Dental floss and other interdental cleaners help clean these hard-to-reach tooth surfaces and reduce the likelihood of gum disease and tooth decay.1 A news release from the ADA4 reaffirmed the use of an interdental cleaner (like floss) as an essential part of taking care of teeth and gums. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also reaffirmed flossing as "an important oral hygiene practice" in an August 2016 communication to ADA News.5
