K. Hanuman Prasad took Geeta under his patronage, trained and groomed her in singing and later launched her into singing for movies. In 1946, she got the first break with an opportunity to sing in the mythological film Bhakta Prahlad for which Prasad was the music director. She was given two lines to sing for two songs. She was sixteen at that time.

She has sung over 1417 songs in Hindi films. In addition, she has sung songs in many other Indian languages including Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Maithili, Bhojpuri and Punjabi. She has sung in Nepali evergreen movie Maitighar.[6]

Both were god gifted singers and complemented each other very well. Though they could have sung duets across various genres, barring a few exceptions, most of their songs are peppy, catchy, exuding enthusiasm. The teasing songs, Chhed Chhad songs and so on. In the late 40s, however, they had a few songs in a melancholy mood. I also gathered that the majority of the songs picturised on Johny Walker were duets and many of those were sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt.

Anther one of your tour de force output. A good post to combine two greats singing together. As expected most of the songs were outside the pale and very few would have heard of it. Thanks to the post they are now out of the box and for listeners to enjoy. I am very poor at picking up songs appropriate. Here is one from the film Shree Ganesh Mahima (1950). Music is by S N Tripathi

I was waiting for the song garib jaanke humor na tum . Would it b referred to as popular, I wondered . Many songs were not known at all while some were known and favorites too . U have done a lot of research and hard work Creditable .All your posts are worth watching and enjoying

Thank you Ravindraji.

I could have done a regular post with the popular songs, but as always, the hidden gems attracted me!

We always appreciate the popular ones, but these hidden treasures must also be appreciated.

?

An excellent tribute to two legendary singers of Hindi Cinema.

As always, you have come up with a nice compilation of the lesser-known songs of the duo.

I heard a few of them for the first time.

I would say, the numbers from Aar Paar and Love Marriage are the most known ones in the list.

The year 1955 brought a couple of mythological films, Shri Ganesh Vivah and Shiv Bhakta, along with Raj Durbaar which sounds like a costume drama. The film, Shiv Bhakta started a very successful and melodious association between Lata Mangeshkar and Chitragupt. But even though most of his songs were now sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt also had her fair share of songs in the forthcoming years.

Anitaji,

Thank you for visiting and commenting. I love the quarter from Tarang. But I already had a quartet from Veer Babhruvahan, so I skipped this one.

I have already gone through the article mentioned by you. There were very less articles to refer to for the post. It needed a lot of listening to the songs and making notes to come to the final 15 songs.

thanks windwheel..

i guess it was a combination of stress and non stop drinking..

i doubt if too many types of sleeping pills were available then..Guru dutt's death of course was due to a combination, a pink residue was found in the glass.

geeta dutt's illness was protracted & painful if i read right..

Never b4 heard of Geeta Dutt, only that Guru Dutt was estranged to his wife. She was extremely beautiful as well. Wow, how come i never heard of any of her songs. I have to check her songs out on you tube, i guess. Thank you for writing this, Maddy. The brilliant actor Rajesh Khanna also suffered due to alcoholism.

perhaps geeta's voice, in its low, passionate register was not deemed fit for the tunes that composers were creating for lata's sweet, high-pitched scale. the depth and pathos concealed even in the liveliest of tunes were out of sync with the image of the eternally adolescent innocence that lata projected? though lata herself admired and respected geeta and is even reputed to have been "afraid" of geeta's talent, there was really no contest. lata was an impeccably trained classical singer with an enviable range, while geeta was like the dawn rain - completely natural and refreshing.

somehow, listening to some of geeta's songs still brings unbidden tears to the eyes - like that old bhajan from kala bazaar - na main dhan chaahoon - "Laye kya ho jo leke jaana hai / ek dil hi tera khazana hai.."

On the occasion of her 50th death anniversary, that falls on July 20, 2022, this tribute talks about how the playback singer transcended both the lyric and the tune of her songs, investing them with an authenticity that beckons the listener to a place of intimacy.

1) Kya Ho Jo Phir Din Rangeela Ho (1957, Nau Do Gyarah, SDB, Co-singer: Asha Bhosle) : Geeta Dutt sang some wonderful songs with Asha Bhosle. May be it is their versatility and ability to convey the right emotions and modulate their voices accordingly. They played off each other very well and their songs together are absolutely delightful. This is my favourite Geeta-Asha duet. Filmed on Shashikala and a gorgeous Helen, this is from the Navketan film Nau Do Gyarah. A delight to listen to, it has been picturised beautifully.

I was listening to 'Baat Chalat naii chunarii rang daari' today and

was enchanted by Geeta Dutt's smooth and lilting rendition. This made

wonder or rather want to hear more songs of the same type by her. When

I tried to recall I could think of none. For the casual listener like me Geeta Dutt's repertiore is dominated

by the Burmanesque and Nayyerish influences. Gems like the above

mentioned songs are few and far between. Though she was not

particularly known for her classical prowess I felt Geeta Dutt did

more than justice to this song. I was hoping that the Geeta Dutt

connoisseurs on this group would direct me to some more songs of hers

in the same genre.Thanks!

Perhaps the Meera Bhajans in JOGAN will qualify as classical songs...I have heard Geeta sang some shlokas from the Geetagovindam in

Anandmath..did she also sing the Vande Mataram song....

Thank you Shudhir and Ajit for your suggestions. I'll try and hunt for

the songs I haven't heard in the list. I had thought of the songs of

Jogan but apart from 'Zaram tham ja tu' I don't particularly think any

of the other songs (the ones I've heard) are in the class of 'Baat

Chalat nai chunari'. Even 'Zara tham ja tu' also is quite different

but very nice.

But not "classical" by any stretch. I thought we (as in "you") were

talking about classical-based songs and not "nice" songs. The two

attributes are independent, no?As an aside, I am not sure what you mean when you say that the

songs of Jogan are not in the same class as "baaT chalat...". Are

you making a quality assessment? Or simply saying that the Jogan

songs are not "classical" enough?

The opening words are "baaT chalat na_ii chunarii ra.ng Daarii"

(the meaning is obvious) and goes on to stuff like "kaiso hai bedardii

banawaarii". Standard fare for semiclassical songs or even classical

I just mentioned, 'Zara tham ja tu' what I do mean to say is that the

songs of Jogan are not really rendered in the classical style in the

filmi parlance. Not the way 'Baat chalat naayi chunari' is.Ritu

Thank you Sudhir for the suggestions. I'll try and get the other songs

from the film. If I am not mistaken by itself 'baat chalat nayi' is

also released in the Geeta Dutt Legends series. As an aside I have

realised that the Volume-1 of most of the legends series (dealing with

the 40's and 50's music for most personalities from the golden era) is

really good. They have made an effort to release a lot of songs that

were not so easily available before. I was pleasantly surprised even

with the Dev Anand collection. I had not thought there would be

anything new they'd have to offer but the first volume in the

collection has a lot of fresh numbers. Also thank you Satishji for giving the the key to solving the riddle

of the lyrics. Yes, I did not equate 'baat' to 'raasta' now it makes

sense. And yes, Vyaakhyaa means elaboration. A typical question in your Hindi

examinations in school read like 'Nimlikhat panktiyon ki vyaakhyaa

kijiye'.Cheers

Ritu

Looks like I found another person with schooling from U.P. :-)I would like to know about the heretofore unreleased/unavailable songs from the

Dev Anand collection.

Happy listenings.Satish Kalra

One of the most beautiful voices in Hindi films, Geeta Dutt had so many great songs that it was a Herculean task to select only 10 songs for this list. So we just randomly shortlisted these gems keeping a few things in mind, fully aware that if we were to compile it tomorrow, we would come up with something totally different. 0852c4b9a8
