Requiring less than 1 MB per minute of music and sounding better than MP3 at the same bitrate, the AAC format is used by iTunes/Apple Music, YouTube and Android.

Although LPCM can be stored on a computer as a raw audio format, it is usually stored in a .wav file on Windows or in a .aiff file on macOS. The Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) format is based on the Interchange File Format (IFF), and the WAV format is based on the similar Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF). WAV and AIFF are designed to store a wide variety of audio formats, lossless and lossy; they just add a small, metadata-containing header before the audio data to declare the format of the audio data, such as LPCM with a particular sample rate, bit depth, endianness and number of channels. Since WAV and AIFF are widely supported and can store LPCM, they are suitable file formats for storing and archiving an original recording.

BWF (Broadcast Wave Format) is a standard audio format created by the European Broadcasting Union as a successor to WAV. Among other enhancements, BWF allows more robust metadata to be stored in the file. See European Broadcasting Union: Specification of the Broadcast Wave Format (EBU Technical document 3285, July 1997). This is the primary recording format used in many professional audio workstations in the television and film industry. BWF files include a standardized timestamp reference which allows for easy synchronization with a separate picture element. Stand-alone, file based, multi-track recorders from AETA,[1] Sound Devices,[2] Zaxcom,[3] HHB Communications Ltd,[4] Fostex, Nagra, Aaton,[5] and TASCAM all use BWF as their preferred format.

Uncompressed audio formats encode both sound and silence with the same number of bits per unit of time. Encoding an uncompressed minute of absolute silence produces a file of the same size as encoding an uncompressed minute of music. In a lossless compressed format, however, the music would occupy a smaller file than an uncompressed format and the silence would take up almost no space at all.

Lossless compression formats include FLAC, WavPack, Monkey's Audio, ALAC (Apple Lossless). They provide a compression ratio of about 2:1 (i.e. their files take up half the space of PCM). Development in lossless compression formats aims to reduce processing time while maintaining a good compression ratio.

Lossy audio format enables even greater reductions in file size by removing some of the audio information and simplifying the data. This, of course, results in a reduction in audio quality, but a variety of techniques are used, mainly by exploiting psychoacoustics, to remove the parts of the sound that have the least effect on perceived quality, and to minimize the amount of audible noise added during the process. The popular MP3 format is probably the best-known example, but the AAC format found on the iTunes Music Store is also common. Most formats offer a range of degrees of compression, generally measured in bit rate. The lower the rate, the smaller the file and the more significant the quality loss.

Hi! So I got a brand new computer a week or two ago, used home sharing to transfer all my music from my old computer to my new computer, and everything seemed okay. However, today I decided to finally sync my iPod to my new iTunes library, and I got an error message for 100 songs saying "the audio format is not supported by the iPod" so the songs can't copy onto my iPod. This makes no sense to me, because the songs were literally on the iPod and able to play fine less than an hour ago, until I wiped everything off my iPod to sync it to the new iTunes. I checked the file format on a few of them, and they're AAC files. Also, I have about 900 songs in my iTunes library, and only 297 of them copied onto my new ipod, and I only got errors for 100 songs, so I just don't know where the rest went. Please help! I want my music back!

Also, none of the songs I had trouble with were downloads or youtube converts. All of them were either from CDs or purchased from the iTunes store and I'm using Windows 8 if that helps. Old youtube converted files kind of just didn't do anything (no error message but not on my iPod either), but files I youtube converted and put into iTunes today worked.

I still have been unable to find out the "official" list of tags supported by Proclaim. Is this not published anywhere? I would have thought this would have been important information in the documentation for Proclaim. Even a sample song with all of the tags demonstrated would be extremely useful.

I could just experiment and figure it out on my own, but I also don't want other people to encounter the same information gap and spend time searching for the same solutions without official help from the Proclaim developers.

A clear, typed lyric sheet, with all of the important contact information, is half the job. The other half is the format. Why? Because, pros are used to reading a lyric sheet typed in a certain style so they can quickly assimilate the content. Making them pause to figure out what is going on with your lyric sheet is not respecting their time. As a result, your pitch will be less effective. So, every time you present a song to a publisher, producer, or artist you must do it in a professional format.

I enjoy audio books & I prefer to combine the tracks for listening on my MP3 player. However, some of them can be quite long, i.e.: more then 24 hours long. If the incorrect amount of time is not correct, it wont allow me to FFWD or RWD if needed. It seems that the program recognizes the length because the bottom information bar shows it as (1 day, 17:24:24|...), but the "Length" is set as only 17:24:24. I have also had occasions where the length is set to 00:00.

I have several hundred songs that I need to import into EW. Looking around at other forum posts, there doesn't seem to be a programmatic way to do this. Surely you guys can code up a standard import format, using XML or even simple text tags (like you already use for SongSelect imports), that would allow importing multiple songs from a single file. If you establish a standard format and publish the details, then others can create converters to take bulk song output from other systems and convert it to the EW import format.

If you haven't already selected a format for standard import, you might consider ChordPro. It's not exactly XML, but it's XML-ish, has the basic metadata you'd need for importing a song, and it's already in wide use. If you keyed off of the {title} tag as the beginning of a song, you could easily support importing multiple songs from one big file.
