She returned to the big screen in 2007 as the titular gisaeng in the film adaptation of Hwang Jin Yi.[23][24] Because they found Song's image "too cute," Jun Ji-hyun and Soo Ae were the producers' original choices for the role, but Song went on a rigorous diet and surprised them with her will and desire to be Hwang Jini.[25] A year later, she made her American debut in the Hollywood indie Make Yourself at Home (formerly titled Fetish), a psychological thriller about a girl who was born to a shaman mother and tries to flee her fate by becoming an immigrant bride in the US.[26][27] Despite Song's attempts to challenge herself, both films underwhelmed the box office.[28][29]

In 2010, she starred in Camellia, an omnibus film made up of three short films directed by three Asian directors. Each episode is set in the past, present, and future of the city of Busan. In the film's final segment, Love for Sale, Song and Kang Dong-won played former lovers who forget their memories about each other, which later leads them to a fatal destiny.[32]

Song next played a documentary filmmaker who finds the strength to forgive the seventeen-year-old boy who killed her fianc but instead of redemption finds only greater tragedy in A Reason to Live (Korean title: Today), which after several delays was released in October 2011.[38] Song was a huge fan of director Lee Jeong-hyang and had actively sought her out,[39] and though she had difficulty getting into character,[40] Song said she fell in love with the script[41][42] and felt her acting had matured.[43] She considers the film "a turning point" in her life.[44][45][46][47]

Song next played a supporting role in The Grandmaster, Chinese director Wong Kar-wai's biographical film about Bruce Lee's kung fu master Ip Man, for which she learned Cantonese and martial arts.[49][50][51] She later admitted there had been "a bit of friction and misunderstanding" with Wong while filming, but that the difficulties helped her mature.[52]

In 2014, Song reunited with Kang Dong-won in My Brilliant Life, E J-yong's film adaptation of Kim Aeran's bestselling novel My Palpitating Life about a couple who watched their son suffering from progeria grow prematurely old.[58][59][60][61][62]

The romantic epic The Crossing was Song's second Chinese film to be released. It was directed by John Woo (Woo's longtime friend and producer Terence Chang has been managing Song's overseas activities since 2008). Previously titled 1949 and Love and Let Love, the long-gestating project had originally been announced at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008,[63][64][65] then cancelled in 2009,[66] and revived again in 2011.[67][68] Woo's recovery from tonsil tumor removal in 2012 led to another delay due to scheduling conflicts among the cast,[69][70] and Song finally began filming in June 2013.[71] The Crossing is based on the true story of the Taiping steamer collision. It follows six characters' intertwining love stories in Taiwan and Shanghai during the 1930s. Song played the daughter of a wealthy banker.[72][73][74]

The film received generally negative reviews from critics. Urvashi Asharl of The Times of India commented that the film was "a huge disappointment" as it had a predictable and dull plot with too many songs but praised the performances of Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, and Jackie Shroff.[9] Rediff.com reviewer Patcy N. also felt that there were too many songs and criticised the script and slow pacing of the film.[10] Namrata Joshi writing for the magazine Outlook wrote that the central romance between Khan and Kapoor was not believable and criticised the acting and script saying "all the actors just sleepwalk through their ill-sketched roles". She also described the depiction of violence against mentally ill patients as therapy in the film as "offensive to say the least".[11]

A group of psychiatrists in Mumbai referred the film to the National Human Rights Commission of India asking for certain scenes to be removed. They felt that the film's depiction of mentally ill patients and their treatment was derogatory and misleading.[12][13]

Himesh Reshammiya composed all the songs featured in the film. The lyrics were penned by Sameer. According to the Indian trade website Box Office India, with around 13,00,000 units sold, this film's soundtrack album was the year's fourteenth highest-selling.[14]

Dil Chahta Hai is the soundtrack album to the 2001 Hindi film Dil Chahta Hai, directed by Farhan Akhtar, starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna. Since its release, the music has received widespread critical acclaim and is considered a milestone in the history of Bollywood film music.[1] It was featured in the BBC Asian Network's Top 40 Soundtracks of All Time list[2] and Planet Bollywood's 100 Greatest Bollywood Soundtracks list.[3]

Dil Chahta Hai is considered to be groundbreaking and one of the best soundtracks to have emerged in contemporary Indian music.[1] The soundtrack stayed away from traditional Bollywood sounds and instead set a new standard for edgy, rock-influenced sounds.[11] The way Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy used thickly layered orchestration and conveyed meaning through Timbre, Pitch and Melody rather than text, was then, probably new to Bollywood.[12] Planet Bollywood's 100 Greatest Bollywood Soundtracks Ever read, "What made Dil Chahta Hai album special at that time was that it was an experimental album and it worked a huge way."[3] According to the Indian trade website Box Office India, with around 20,00,000 units sold, this film's soundtrack album was the year's eighth highest-selling.[13]
