Google Voice gives you a phone number for calls, texts, and voicemails. You can use this number to make domestic and international calls from your web browser and mobile devices. If you're in the US, you can choose your own number.

Google Talk was also the name of the client applications previously offered by Google to use the service. Google Talk applications were available for Microsoft Windows,[3] Android,[4] BlackBerry OS,[5] BlackBerry 10[5] and ChromeOS[6] operating systems. A Google Talk mobile web app had also been previously available.[7] In February 2015, the Windows client was discontinued and ceased to work, with Google recommending users to use Google Hangouts instead.[8][9] Users of Windows client were instructed to migrate to the Google Hangouts app on the Chrome browser platform.[10] Currently, Google is migrating its users from Google Hangouts, to Google Chat and Google Meet.

It was possible to place and receive phone calls from within Gmail by using Google Talk. In order to receive calls, however, the user had to upgrade to a full Google Voice account.[17] Initially, users outside of the US could not upgrade to a full Google Voice account or receive phone calls in Gmail.[18] (Outbound calling through Gmail did not require Google Voice and was available in many countries outside the US.)[19] Google Talk allowed users to leave a voicemail for a contact whether or not they were signed into Google Talk.[20] Messages could be up to 10 minutes long and users could choose to have them sent to their Gmail inbox. Messages could be sent with or without first ringing the recipient's phone number.

However, given that Google Talk provided XMPP protocol, most mobile phones for which a suitable XMPP client existed[29] could also offer Google Talk service, at least theoretically (depending on the handset, the user may have encounter security warnings because of unsigned Java ME MIDlets or limits put in place by the mobile service provider). Mobile clients specially designed for Google Talk existed as well.[30]

Most phones supported the IMPS protocol, and there was hybrid XMPP/IMPS networks (through XMPP transports, or specially designed hybrid servers),[31] which could also contact Google Talk users. The Google Talk service itself was unusable from IMPS (that means, one could not log with their Gmail account, but they could talk with their Gmail friends with their IMPS account from their mobile phone).[clarification needed]

A screen shot was posted on May 18, 2007, as part of the Google Apps presentation, showing some phone integration in Google Talk.[44] On March 2, 2008. a Google engineer confirmed they had been using it internally for some time.[45]

I have various Google home devices, Google home minis, google nest hubs, google nest audio. I have various other wifi devices including TVs and 5 family members with Apple phones. I work in IT and my PCs are ethernet wired.

Same here. Upgraded to all new Nest WiFi. Have 4 installed in 4000sf house. It works great for a while and then devices start loosing network connections. I can unplug tv and power back on it works for while. Even swapping to other network i created will start it back up. My Galaxy phone will even do same thing as well as Dell laptop. Never happened until I upgraded from old Gen 1 mesh system.

Currently, I have a good connection, shown on WiFiman, but download is approximately 10Mbps on my phone, my computer (right next to me) is 80Mbps. 5 minutes ago, the computer showed 33Mbs. An hour ago it was 5Mbs.

Finding information with your mobile device just got easier. The Google mobile app lets you search Google from your smartphone. This free app offers a few interesting search functions that will make locating a new bistro or specialty shoe retailer a lot more fun, too.

The Google mobile app is currently available for the BlackBerry, Nokia, iPhone, Windows Mobile and Android, among others. To find out if your mobile device is supported, all you have to do is use your phone's Web browser to visit m.google.com/search and Google will evaluate your equipment. If your phone is compatible, Google will send you the right version of its mobile app automatically. Otherwise, bookmark the Google mobile page for future reference. You never know when you'll need it.

Has anyone here dealt with Googles hangout app for mobile devices going through the firewall. The customer wants to allow hangout chat but not file-transfer or video calling. The apps sees it as google-talk and under it is gtalk-voice, google-talk-base and gtalk-file-transfer. If we set up the policy for app filtering would the gtalk-file-transfer be masked by ssl or would it still be seen?

Can anyone at Google explain why the ability to use Huddle (aka Messenger) is not possible via the webpage? It's a bit tedious typing longish messages on a phone when I'm sat next to a perfectly good laptop/pc.

+1 to Gardner, I've got a Wildfire running CM7 - again, why can't I update G+ app?

This is obviously a nonsense, please correct it ASAP. My phone is running 2.3, and yet I am not allowed to get newest version of Google+ client. Don't push me into downloading an APK...

I tried going to www.google.com/mobile/+ in my Kindle 3's browser, and it took me to a desktop site telling me to visit it on a phone. I tried going to m.google.com/plus and it told me to download it via the Android Market (and Kindle doesn't run Android).

Can we please access it via any browser? I'd like to be able to use Hangouts/Messenger even though I don't own a smartphone.

All great announcements, but two things, please!

1) Can we have the mobile Messenger function integrate with people who are using the chat function in G+ from their computer? Facebook's messenger app and their integrated messages on their website seem to work pretty well.

2) Will we be able to launch Hangouts from the mobile device? Right now it says we'll have to look for an active one in the stream, but it'd be even better if we can start one from our mobile devices.

Thanks! Keep those great updates comin'!

What's the deal with "front-facing camera required" for G+ mobile??

A cam is a cam. With a single, rear-facing camera, I can show someone around a room I am in or i can point the thing at a mirror and they can see me just fine.
