Neither Dell, nor Apple, provide the specialized OS X USB driver support that would enable the full Dell keyboard functionality as in Windows. You are left with basic keyboard functionality supported by standard OS X USB driver support.

This is one of those Dell products where they wrote custom Windows-only USB driver code for it, and then slipstreamed that keyboard support into the OEM Windows build that they installed on the computer that shipped with the keyboard.

I have uninstalled my Dell Laptops onboard Keyboard Driver as I was doing some troubleshooting with the external Logitech Wireless Keyboard thinking there were too many duplicate drivers installed hence I removed everything from the Device Manager in regards to Keyboard Drivers hoping Windows will re-install on reboot, which has not happened. Using a Wired Keyboard I tried to install PS/2 Compatible Keyboard assuming that would work but was not able to find it, so the only option was not to install HID-Compliant Keyboard which again does not make the laptop's keyboard work. I'm thinking maybe this is related to the Fingerprint reader since only the power button works on Laptop and it has triggered some type of security feature as this is on the Keyboard, thus uninstalling the keyboard device might have to be re-enabled on the BIOS level? I was thinking that there would have to be some BIOS TPM reset/enable action done for the onboard keyboard to work again?

I recently bought a Dell G5 laptop which came pre-installed with Windows OS. However, I removed Windows OS and install Ubuntu 20.04.02 LTS on it. Now, I'm unable to get the keyboard backlight to work and I'm unable to find a solution to this problem.

I don't have brightnessctl installed (Asus Zenbook) on 20.04 LTS but I am able to use Fn+F7 to toggle on or off the keyboard backlight. The question is already a year old but it may help some people facing the same issue.

For anyone searching like me; If you were searching for Backlit keyboard instead of keyboard backlight; then it can only be enabled (on those keyboards; that have that functionality in the first place), from the keyboard function key (in my case it was F9).

Recommendation: Novice Windows users are recommended to use a driver update utility like DriverDoc [Download DriverDoc - Product by Solvusoft] to assist in updating Dell Keyboard device drivers. Our driver update utility does all of the work by downloading and updating the correct Dell drivers automatically.

The best part about using DriverDoc is that not only do your Keyboard drivers stay updated automatically, but the rest of your PC's drivers as well. With a database of over 2,150,000 drivers that's updated constantly, you can be sure we have the drivers your PC needs.

Downloading the correct drivers for a Dell Keyboard-related hardware device can be difficult because of the lack of sources, and difficulties locating them on the official Dell website. Locating, downloading, and manually updating your Windows Dell Keyboard driver does take a lot of time, making the process unbearable for most users. An incorrect driver or version for your hardware will cause further damage.

Changing drivers is a very tedious and complicated process, so why not use a driver update software? An advanced driver update tool guarantees that you have all new driver versions, confirms that updates are compatible, and provides a backup of your current drivers. Backup drivers provide you with the comfort of knowing that if anything goes wrong, you can roll back to previous drivers.

So got a new Dell KB522 Business Multimedia Keyboard but I can't for the life of me find the drivers for it. I want to utilize the multimedia shortcut keys but cannot in win 7 pro 64bit straight out of the box. Not disc was included either???

Do you have the input driver installed from Opens a new window? It doesn't look like there is a driver specific to that keyboard on their support site, but it looks like as long as you're plugging it into a new enough Dell computer it is under support.

So I probably should have mentioned that I have an IO Gear GCS632U KVM that has never given me issues before today... Turns out that that when I hook up the keyboard to the machine directly all the multimedia keys work (without drivers mind you) but as soon as I hook the keyboard back to the KVM all the special keys stop working...

Thought I'd share in case someone else searches and lands here. The extra buttons on my Dell KB522 multimedia keyboard quit working after the machine was upgraded to Windows 10, so I searched for the driver. Dell site was such a disappointment...

%uFEFFTried Motzilla's solution of plugging directly to the laptop (Dell Latitude E6440) and the extra keys worked immediately. OK, so the work around was to unplug and plug it directly to the laptop every time. Then it started randomly not working, I'd have to plug in 2-3 times before it worked, if at all. Tried back on the dock - nothing. Tried back again on a different USB port on the laptop, and a window saying the driver was being installed popped up with a progress bar, then it was gone. Keys were working again. I figured now that a driver was installed it might work in any USB port including the dock, so I unplugged from the laptop, plugged on the dock, and it's been working so far. We'll see tomorrow after a shutdown for the night...

Sometimes the problem with the keyboard is a minor one. A simple restart might be enough to resolve the issue. So just restart your Dell laptop and see if the keyboard problem is resolved. If your keyboard is still not working, try the next solution.

There is a possibility the keyboard driver has become corrupt, and because of which, your keyboard has stopped working. A simple solution to this problem is uninstalling the keyboard driver. The result will be Windows 10 will install a new keyboard driver from its database that would get the keyboard working.

During restart Windows 10 operating system will detect missing driver for keyboard and install a generic driver for a keyboard that would get the keyboard working again. If the keyboard is not working after these steps, try next solution.

after the recent update to windows 11 everything were good. but i was prompted for small small updates afterwards too. after the small update has been done the keys on laptop mainly B,N, Arrow Left-right-down were not working. I tried restarting the laptop several time but failed to solve the problem. after few hours it started working again. my laptop is dell inspiron which is in very fine condition. not a scratch or a dent. its purely a bug issue. I am a software developer i need my laptop for work. please fix these issues. ASAP

Some while after I updated to Windows 11, I started noticing a problem with some keys in one area of the keyboard not responding well to key-clicks. I would sometimes have to click them more than once. I assumed this was due to dust under the keys, and so fished tiny dust bunnies out with a bit of paper (hoping that was gentle enough not to damage the keys).

I got one of those little keyboard vacuums, but they don't have enough suction to pull out compacted dust bunnies, just loose dust. I was tempted to (carefully!) use my real vacuum. In any case, cleaning did not help.

I installed Windows 11 on my business computer. Seemed OK. Then the mouse left click and scroll started having problems. The scroll and click would work for a bit here and there, but I couldn't long click at all and could only scroll down a few lines. Same for the touch pad. Then the shift key and ctrl key stopped working randomly. Sometimes it would let me type 1 letter in caps, but it was random. Very difficult to reproduce to find a pattern. I popped off a key thinking maybe there was a crumb under it, but it was clean, and the problem kept getting worse. I resorted to using an external keyboard instead of my laptop keyboard, but it was buggy too.

Yes, there are driver problems since upgrading to Windows 11, but the mouse and keyboard drivers wouldn't update and uninstalling and reinstalling didn't help. (Still trying to fix some of those driver issues for other devices.)

I'm so grateful that you shared your experience with this. I did the same as you, cleaning the keyboard, with no success, and I was starting to wonder if I needed to tear apart my laptop and replace the keyboard or some control board. Happy I didn't have to do that.

Update: Game Mode is off for all users but the problem started back up again after using the laptop for just a few hours. I went back to Windows 10. So far that has fixed it along with all of my driver issues., so clearly this is a software issue related to Windows, not a hardware issue. Hoping this doesn't happen again. Super frustrating.

To date there were no reported keyboard issues for upgrades to Windows 11 per the Microsoft website:

If you could not find the exact driver for your hardware device or you aren't sure which driver is right one, we have a program that will detect your hardware specifications and identify the correct driver for your needs. Please click here to download.

The easiest way to unlock a Dell keyboard is to try a simple restart of the laptop. Turn it off, wait two minutes, and restart it. If that doesn't work you may have an Fn, Scroll lock, or Number lock issue. In each case, try pressing the relevant key along with the Esc key. For example, press Fn + Esc key to get your function keys unlocked and working again. In the worst case scenario, you may need to seek the assistance of a professional computer repair service.

Option 1 (Recommended): Update drivers automatically - Novice computer users can update drivers using trusted software in just a few clicks. Automatic driver updates are fast, efficient and eliminate all the guesswork. Your old drivers can even be backed up and restored in case any problems occur. ff782bc1db
