When the core staff is arranged, they meet and plan out the anime, work on series composition (how the anime will play out across each episode/over the course of the series), and select further staff such as character or mecha designers. One of the most crucial core staff is the director. To understand the role of directors, you could think of them like directors of a movie, but instead of dealing with actors, they deal with the animators who make the characters movie. Their involvement is generally to attend meetings and make decisions in order to manage the schedule, budget and quality of an anime.

Following the early panning sessions, designs (character, mecha, costume, etc) are then created. Designs are obviously an important factor in creating a good anime. Character designers either have the task of simplifying manga/illustration designs so that they are suitable for animation, or, in the case of an original anime, coming up with a new set of characters based on descriptions from the director/producers. Character designers often continue to advise animation directors on corrections to animation that should be made to stay close to their character models (in which case they are generally credited as Chief Animation Director for the series).

Animation directors tend to be more experienced animators and are paid more for the role. However, it is their responsibility if things go wrong with the animation, making it a potentially very stressful job, especially under time pressure. Often, an episode of anime will have more the one animation director, and this can be a sign of scheduling problems, with more people needed to complete the episode satisfactorily and on time, or even a sign of many poor drawings needing correction. It can also be because animation directors are being used to their specialties (ie. an animation director brought on to handle a mecha sequence, or to handle drawings of animals), or an indication that it was a difficult and demanding episode with a lot of drawings.

1. On average, how many people would you say, would be working on the actual drawing process of an episode in an anime series? Ex: Naruto

2. Another on average question. How long would you say an episode would take from the time meetings take place, to the time the episode is finished?

this so great i have recently started making anime with my friends i draw and do the animation and colouring and they do the voices when im done ill put it on youtube or whatever but its basicaly about

Backgrounds are often painted digitally these days, but I think sometimes they are not. It should be pretty clear just by looking at it which is the case. I would say the majority of TV-anime use pretty ugly and stock-standard digital painting techniques on their backgrounds.

I get what you mean, like there are some episodes even in mainstreamed animes like naruto and bleach where the art are badly drawn and the animations were plainly done. I dunno if japanese animators sometimes tend to be not in mood or as you just said being lazy

Hello we are a new anime studio based in America who would be willing for young animators to start their careers (However since we are YouTube based probably no pay). Please visit our YouTube page for information on future/planned anime we are currently working on also send us an email if you are interested in applying.

Thankyou Washi. Its long I have been looking into these facts. Awesome article. I had a college project for which your blog was the most useful to me. instead if rebloging, I have taken some chunks and wrote a new post in my own Blog. thank you again

So if i wanted to make an anime what position in this chart of ranks would give me the most control over it and give me position of the creater, and if so the collage/university course i need to do for that particular position, and am also asking for some pointers on somethings i might need to know,i would apriciate your reply and it would mean so much to me,thanx!

Thank-you so much! I knew I wanted to be an animator for anime and see some of my ideas come to life (hopefully), but when my friend showed me this, even she decided she was going to do this with me. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! Very informative! I loved it!

The colored pencils are used to indicate what color the cel/finished art is supposed to be. IIRC the color schemes are highly individual to each studio. One of the links in the blog entry or in my first posts should have the details.

chanced upon this page by doing some searching. Good work and help to shed light on anime production. i wish to ask also how do they do the planning of the background with the animation, together with the panning, zooming etc..how do they plan out the sizing of the character with the background? what if the character is drawn too big or the background perspective is wrong? how do they get it correct? thanks

Hi DocWatson, I know that the anime industry can be a hash place, but is it possible to actually get a job in such a studio? My dream is to work for studio Gainax, but i dont know if they hire people at all.

I've been frequenting StackExchange sites for quite some time; ifyou're not familiar, they're basically Yahoo Answers done right. Readingthrough the Anime and Manga forum, I came across a post aboutracism in One Piece. This also led me to read this blog postand this rather long post on IGN (WARNING: links contain One Piecespoilers. The rest of this post contains very minor spoilers.)

The art is something this anime can be proud of, at least. The character designs are great, especially their clothes. The irises of the characters are so beautiful and gorgeous. The animation is very colorful at the same time, very dark. It helps building up the suspense mood this anime is giving off.

Another high-profile anime this season is Owari no Seraph, or Seraph of the End in English. I want to think it has potential, despite the flaws. I really do. Hence, it was the second anime I gave a go this season.

Not only does RD excel in regular standard element of good anime, with certain qualities, it appeals to me in the way only few other shows have done before. I know this may sound silly but I think RD is made specifically for me. This anime manages to include almost every feature that matches my taste into one single show. The cyberpunk theme involving the meta-real and cyber brain technology is captivating and inspiring and it provides endless possibility of further imagination.

Well in Japanese anime, every little detail is important to understanding the story. It gives us a clue as to how the story may go. In K: Return of Kings (also known as Project K: Return of Kings) three groups meet to discuss plans, and the tea stalk makes an appearance:

In most of the anime I have seen, the tea stalk goes unmentioned, though it is clearly not hidden either. However, sometimes a character may comment on it and even bring in some controversy such as in Noragami:

Now the second arc was where I felt like the anime was slightly dragging. After the draw dropping ending to the first one and with myself still trying to process what happened I ended up feeling rather deflated of how they had managed to introduce N into the story being an exact replica of L. But this arc may have dragged on but it still contributed a lot to the story in many ways and helped draw the cat and the mouse chase to an end.

Okay by no means am I some kind of expert on animations but watching Death Note kinda got me thinking a bit. The dark colours went so well with anime portraying its dark story-line perfectly and the scenery was done beautifully [Especially at the end of episode 37 that setting was so pretty I took a screenshot of it!] This anime even made writing with a bloody pen look cool showing close ups of Light writing but also his actually reaction and state when he was doing it just added to everything.

Two words I will say in the most British accent ever: Bloody Amazing! It was a long Anime to watch with a hefty amount of 37 episodes but it was so worth it. Yes I did loose a lot of sleep staying up still 3am but that my friends was how good it was. Death Note made me think in so many ways over its debatable topic but that is what makes this anime so brilliant and shine.  0852c4b9a8
